I do miss Stav, Mac, but I am glad to see and listen to you. One of the ways that Stav equips herself is by being humble enough to seek instruction and guidance and other well thought out opinions and insights than just her own. This is where you come in, and I am glad she shares your with us!

You were correct… we would much prefer seeing Stav!!! 😂. Yet, that being said, I’m glad she gave you the camera for two reasons: one, you are smart and experienced with respect to firearms and stressful situations, so your opinion and suggestions have a lot of weight. And secondly, you two are now married and it’s great to see a couple working together.
    Thanks for the video.

I watched to the end. You provided some legit info regarding firearms choices. The most important takeaway for me was familiarity and instinctive reaction. There is nothing worse than being in a high stress situation and wondering why something isn’t working right, only to find out later on that it was YOU who was not reacting right to the situation. Great episode!

Great job, Mac! I loved that your first question is "Why do you want to carry?" You gave such great scenarios and really made me think about what is my biggest reason for carrying. Also, I really appreciate that Stav was concerned about getting content out for us, even though she's SO busy. Wishing her the best of luck on the launch of Armed and Confident! 💖

Good show, Mac. As a California police officer and concealed carry permit instructor, (and a Greek!) I’ve had this conversation with many of my students. Glad you put it on a video, I can now just send new shooters this link. Maybe just post a still pic of Stav while you talk, it will be easier on everyone. 😂. Thanks. Stay safe back there.

Mac, instead of being disappointed, I clicked on this video immediately, precisely because it *was* you. Don’t get me wrong, Σταυρούλα is a darn sight prettier than you are, but I married the pretty girl of my choice 48 years ago, so that’s not why I watch this channel. I started watching because I wanted to find videos my wife could relate to, and I’ve shared them with her. (And we watched this one together.) But I especially like it when you’re in the video. To borrow an old phrase, “When Mac speaks, people listen.”
As for asking yourself “Why carry?” and what philosophy of personal defense carry to maintain, I did that when first made my decision to do so. Good stuff here, I’ll probably be watching this one again.

Very good indeed. I especially like that he pointed out to pick a brand and model that works for you and is within your budget(ok, I added the budget part) and stick with it and train diligently. I do some new shooter/ccw training. A couple of big things I learned fairly quick was that a lot of folks cannot afford a $600-700 firearm. So, I set out on a mission about 5 years ago to find a good quality, reliable firearm without going too low like a hi-point. I found one and proceeded to put some rounds through it. I'm over 8k rounds with only one failure to eject that I was desperately trying to cause by limp wristing it. I could not get it to do it again. It is my daily cc and is on my hip as I type. The second thing I learned was that a bunch of folks carry several different firearms. Like they have their pretty kimber for church, a crappy .380 in their pocket, empty chamber, to run to the store and they don't train with any of them. I used to wear a different holster when on my range compared to the one I wear daily...then it hit me how dumb that was. I now train (live fire and dry fire) just as I carry daily, with my firearm concealed, with mag holster and firearm holster that I wear every day. I understand LEO's or security guards that carry on a duty rig and CC, they will have to train with both. I purchased the big brother to my daily cc and it is on a shoulder rig for around the farm and home security. There are 4 people now that carry the same firearm in my house. At minimum, 3 mags each, that's a lot of magazine compatibility if the substance of waste hits the rotating oscillator.

Ok, I'm gonna catch it, but I have an original shield for the kitchen, 12 ga for bedroom, I carry a govt 1911 in .45 daily. Several other guns around. I toss a .22 in pocket of my coat.
The reason I carry in coat is it's enough to use and if it's prolonged I have the 1911 as a backup. I'm very accurate in reaction fire drills with both and I wasn't with the shield.

Just found this channel. There is a lot of gun shaming in the community. I wear mine just about every single day and I need it concealed. That being said, back before we were granted the privilege (because NJ doesn't believe in rights) I bought my first hand gun which was a lightly used LC9. Years later having fired many other firearms, I realized that the LC9 had a terrible trigger. At that point I sent it out to Galloway Precision and had the whole upgrade package. Recently I added xl night sights myself. The gun has become everything I need it to be. Its small, single stack, trigger feels great, sights are quick and easy to see in the dark, its 9mm, and it holds up to 9+1, but most importantly it goes bang every time. I have 10rd mags for it but they're worthless for concealment. For my needs its comfortable for inside the waste-band carry 24/7 - 365. I see a lot of guys concealing large frame guns with red dots and if that's what works for them, great. That wont work for me. If I could open carry, maybe. My wife is looking to buy her first gun so my next videos to watch are Stav's LCP max videos.

And I recently/couple years ago, injured my back at work, and had back surgery, got a couple rods and a few screws in my back and it would be hard and scary for my to fight someone off protecting me or family, because any wrong moves or badguy threw me down or something I could be paralyzed. Thanks. This was a very good video. On my own I've travelled down the "what do I carry" road and I now carry what I know is the best gun I shoot at the range. I have a Ruger Max 9, a Canik TP9 Elite SC, and ...... a Sig Sauer P320 Nitron Carry which is what I go back to every time. I've carried the other guns here and there. For now the Canik is a truck gun and the ruger is probably for sell. 12 Gauge by the bed with LEO #00 8 pellet. thanks again, I enjoyed that

    • @Fanuc_Operator1990

All pretty good options and reliable which is the most important thing really. I have an Ruger LCP Max for CC and a Sig P365XL and a shotgun for home defense. I don't think there is really one correct gun, there are correct guns for certain situations but I don't believe any pistol is the best choice for defense when the option of a rifle or shotgun is there. Particularly in areas where over penetration isn't an issue. If it is an issue I prefer #4 buck shot in a shotgun. I have a 9 shot Mossberg ready to go.

As a current NRA Instructor I always recommend her channel to women that ask me questions better answered by Stav. My only recommendation for you both on the videos is I think there needs to be more mention of our precious 2A rights and that everyone needs to remember that every time they vote, every time. Thanks to you both.

I totally concur with what you said about staying within a family of pistols. If they have similar controls, it’s easier to transition from one to another and have a firearm for your varied carry needs. I’m a Glock guy, but if M&P, Sig, Springfield, or other brand fit you better then go for it.
As Sootch00 says, we truly live in the golden age of firearms.

The Ruger LCR, was the first firearm I ever carried. I never switched over to a semi-auto, because I was so used to the LCR. I bought a 9 mm, but I never got enough time in the range with it to feel comfortable enough to carry it. On another note, I have taken all of Mac's classes over the years at MFS. He really is a good instructor.

I carry a Para Ordnance 1911 style, 14 + 1 rounds of .45 cal. I don't practice as much as I used to...at 70 my wrists are starting to give me problems after 35 years of martial arts. That .45 caliber recoil hurts after only 20 or 30 rounds, but I figure in a self defense situation I'll be so pumped up on adrenaline I won't feel my wrists ... and I can drive nails with this thing.

This is a point I've been trying to get across to my Dad. He's got 2 different handguns and load of different rifles. I told him I only wanted 2-3 firearms and he thought I was crazy, but in reality I'd rather know the ins and outs of those 2-3 weapons than have 5-7 firearms that I don't train with often and aren't fully modded the way I want them.

I live in California so I am limited on what I can have. For my Jack of all trades gun I default to my Glock 30SF. I can only have 10+1 capacity; might as well go with the biggest I can get. I keep it loaded with Federal Punch ammo. I can afford that ammo more so than the HST. A box of Punch ammo here is $18-$22 but HST is $43. I cannot afford to train with an ammo that comes to $2.15 a round. The Punch ammo is meant for civilian use anyway. It's not built to go through lots of barriers. That's good, because I live in an 1100 sq ft townhouse anyways. Now I also carry revolvers and use them effectively. I do a lot of dry fire practice and I go to the range twice a month. It's just that in the summer the wheelgun just fits me better. I carry for a different role when I carry the wheelgun anyways. It mostly serves as coyote repellent for my long walks in the hot Mojave. The .38 buffalo bore hits hard.

Appreciate the insight brother. In the car I keep an extra mag in a storage bin next to the steering wheel, but will consider taking the two mags already loaded in belt clips that collect dust in my closet. 8 + 1 in 9mm runs dry pretty fast when the adrenaline is flowing. Also grabbing the 00 buck or slug loaded 12 gauge gives you a decided advantage and more fire power in a home invasion. Keeping the the shotgun in ready mode to me means, 1st round birdshot, 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds 00 buck or slugs. If they get hit with birdshot and run away that’s fine. If they want to hang around and fight it out it’s going to really hurt.

I'll have up to 3 different edc firearms soon. Currently go between a springfield 911 (deepest concealment) and I train for the thumb sweep. Even sweep on the striker fired guns I've shot 1911's for so long. Also carry a Glock 42 (deep concealment), looking between a p365, hellcat or R7 mako for regular carry.
I live in Central FL, so shorts and t-shirt are standard most of the year
I really only care to protect myself and my family. My car gun is a bit larger, a PSA dagger compact (17 rnd gen 3 glock mag). My home defense is an ak in .223/.556 or a beretta 92 both have weapon lights

TWO: I carry the right ones for me. Glock 42 and Glock 19 are my favorites; I don't carry anything else in a handgun. The 42 is for certain occasions and distances from home; likewise with the 19. The best advice is often none. Ask enough questions to get the person to draw their own conclusions. The trick is asking the right questions. For most people one won't quite do it & having a similar operating system is the best way to do that. I've followed that principle for years.

This is just my observation, but I think most people- beginner or experienced- who carry a concealed weapon are focused too much on the gun, caliber, holster, carry positions, etc... and not focused enough on the most important thing of all: mental attitude and preparedness to fight to stop a threat. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm just basing this on what I've heard and seen. Good video. Thanks.

I quite like your approach, and I'd like your comment on my approach.
Firstly, I've carried several handguns over the years: first, a 7,65mm FN Browning hammerless pistol. This was very useful when wearing semi-formal/formal wear, in my shoulder holster. Nobody ever commented on my wearing it. Then I added a Star 9mm and used that for a while (because I picked it up cheap), but it was about the size of a Colt 1911 and I didn't like it. Shot quite well with it though. I replaced that with an FN Browning Hi Power 9mm, which was a truly great carry gun, but was a bitch to shoot. I carried that until a few years ago. So, I think I've got a reasonable idea about carrying, but did not carry ALL THE TIME.
Now, this debate: and learning from what went before. In a self-defence/home defence role, I tend towards believing that one weapon does not cover all the needs, so I'm going to broaden my answer to include a wide range of needs, and the guns I would ideally choose to meet them. I also agree with you about similarity of platforms approach, but extend it a bit. I have owned FN Herstal firearms for decades and I trust the brand. Individual guns might not always be THE best there is, but the group would do a very good job under most circumstances.
    1. Handgun: Here I would go for the FN Five seveN. This weapon is light (lighter than most comparable Glocks), small enough (smaller than a Beretta 9mm), very low recoil Beats everything), accurate (out to 50-100m), easy to shoot (even for small-limbed people and children), Big mag (20+1), very ergonomic, and reliable (with the right ammo!). As to it's effectiveness, this is beyond dispute - this is after all what it was SPECIFICALLY designed for, using this specific calibre (5,7 x 28mm). It ticks more of the boxes even my excellent Hi Power did.
    2. Carbine: Otherwise called a PDW. Here the FN P90 (or PS90SBR, to be legal) is again the weapon designed (for NATO!) for this exact purpose. It is probably the most compact, easy to use and accurate weapon in this class. The ergonomics are truly amazing, and is still used by the US Secret Service, for appropriate situations, like personal protection. The 50 round magazine is a real advantage. Trained and competent shooters can be accurate out to 200m, while some are accurate out to 300m. In confined spaces situations the P90 has no peers. Practically speaking, carrying this in a backpack or haversack is very easy.
A person armed with these two weapon has 71 shots before having to change magazines.
    3. Shotgun: You mentioned this in the video, and of course your point is entirely valid. The shotgun would be part of the "home base" armament suite, not for carrying really.
Here my choice would be the FN SLP (Mk1, 8 shot) semi-auto 12 gauge, another weapon specially designed for use by law Enforcement officers, still in wide service to this day.
    4. Long gun: For many years I hunted with a bolt action .270 (South African Musgrave, Mk1, Vrystaat model, with a 4 X scope.) - an outstanding rifle! However, in this context, I feel like cheating a little. I would prefer my long gun to be able to double as a defensive firearm as well. Clearly, there is only one choice for me:
The FN SCAR 17 (or SCAR17S, to be legal), in 7,62mm. In its NRCH configuration, it is in my mind the best allround choice for this purpose (endorsed by SOCOM for its Spec Ops forces). (This would reside in the Home Base gun safe, with the shotgun.
Over the years, I learned that it's important to keep things simple. I dislike the way people add all sorts of paraphernalia to their guns till they look like Christmas trees - just more things to complicate things under stress! In the vast majority of situations those things won't really add significantly to the situation, and could even jeopardise your safety. I think it's better to train properly with your weapons to hone familiarity and competence using the firearm.
Comments invited, and it would ne good to see you here again some time!

What gun are you most accurate with.and what are you most likely to actually carry consistently. Was my starting point. Every round not on target. Can make a already bad situation worse. If you don't carry because it's uncomfortable or impractical. It won't help if/when you do need it.

Very Good Mac! I too carried the S&W on duty and after I retired stayed with it and my carry is a Shield. My Wife carries the same, she has the Shield Plus as well. Love those weapons shoot a lot and all "Muscle Memory" Same weapons so no need for overthinking in an emergency. A split second counts. I agree with the Shotgun easy access for home defense. Thanks

I carry because I rather be prepared then not. I will give my life for my wife and son so having it gives me peace of mind. My brother suffers from mental illness so I know how dangerous he is even when he doesn't know he is. I had a co worker ask why it's justified to get 90 shots in 1 person and I showed him videos of guys that got up after a mag dump...... I carry a MP9 Shield it's just small enough to be out of the way but 9 rounds total I think is ok would like more but the Springfield Hellcat and XDM came out after I bought it.

Great video Mac. I'm a relatively new firearm enthusiast. My 1st was a Smith & Wesson Shield Plus which I've practiced most with. Over the last year I've acquired a few more varying types of guns and most recently the LCP Max. My skills vary greatly between guns. The LCP max being the one I'm least confident carrying. Taking the cool factor out is probably the smartest thing anyone can do to maximize their comfort with what they carry.

The personal choice of a defensive handgun for concealed carry, is totally different from choosing a home defense weapon.
A defensive handgun (from a minimum of a 9mm Para or 38 spl up to a 45acp or 10mm) is a compromise. It is small enough, light enough, and is good enough for personal defense outside of the home. On the other hand, a home defense weapon can be much larger, heavier, and more powerful (such as a 12 GA. Shotgun).

Mac. I enjoyed your thoughts on different weapons. I was thinking of a S&W BG .380. I recently fired a Sig .380 that is more of a 1911 style pistol (P238), it was fun. However, I wouldn't carry it, as it differs so much from a P365XL. I imagine that under stress, I'd screw it up. Simplicity makes sense to me. Carry the same thing that I use at the range on a regular basis. Thanks for the tips. Lee

Mac, I would like for you (or Stav) to address a couple of items that I don't see anyone on UA-cam talking about:
    1. What happens when you discharge a firearm in a small room, at night.
    2. How far down in your waistband do you place an IWB holster,
I see loads of vids telling people to have a AR next to your bedside for home defense. All I can think about is what is going to happen when they fire that high-powered rifle in a small, dark room. The sound from the first bullet will probably deafen everyone in the room and the muzzle flash will temporarily blind everyone (especially, if they just woke up in a dark room). Being deaf and blind is not the best way to fight off one or more intruders. Is there anything someone can do to minimize these this disadvantage? What is the experience of police inside dwellings when they have to discharge a firearm in a small space?
I see lots of vids showing people to place their IWB holster deep in their waistband. When I follow these instructions, I'm always having difficulty getting my fingers around the pistol, pulling it out, and adjusting my grip so I can fire accurately. My preference is to place my pistol (P365) in my IWB holster, grip the pistol like I normally do, and push the pistol/holster into my waistband until I feel it hit my fingers, and then I let go. This means the holster and pistil are higher than what I see everyone "teaching", but when I grab my pistol, I can get my firing grip instantly, pull the pistol, and don't have to adjust my grip before firing. I have not had an issue with the pistol moving or, heaven forbid, fall out of my waistband. What are your thoughts on how deep or high to carry IWB? Thanks! Love both of you guys' vids and instruction.

The “best” gun is a reliable firearm that you carry all the time and can get hits with. First Vital Hits always beat bigger caliber non-vital hits or misses. 380 and up all have the same effectiveness for citizen defense. If you’ll carry 380 24-hrs a day vs 9mm part-time, go with 380.

Well thought out well reasoned and articulated.Further examples with a shotgun home defense if you grew up with Remington stick with that platform. If you are a Mossberg student stick with it.Especially if you store them racked and safety on.I hope you have convinced someone to choose their weapons like tools and not collectors items.Well done!As in all things in life reduce the clutter.Sticking to those things of familiarity which thru training and mussell memory will serve you well in high stress situations.

Well spoken, and thank you for your service. I would suggest to be less involved with third party shootings. Sometimes a good guy with a firearm can be perceived as a bad guy. Plainclothes police officers when challenged has to comply to responding uniform officers instructions to drop the gun and then state "I am a Police Officer". We as civilians only have, "in-fact committed" 100% correct, rights to use serious or deadly physical force and must be reasonable and necessary. Police officers have "reasonable cause to believe" to use serious or deadly physical force when reasonable and necessary, not in-fact committed.

You put some thought into this video with good information. I've found the only way to find out how good the firearm is and you operating it is to do some kind of training or competition. When you're trying to shoot fast like in an IDPA tournament, you find out fairly quickly how the gun runs, its flaws, & your flaws which will cause malfunctions. So I'd get the smallest gun you can run flawlessly and shoot well. In my collection of guns I have an Ruger LCP2, Kimber Micro 9, Sig P365 & the P365XL, S&W Shield Plus 4" ported barrel, Ruger SR9C, CZ P10C, Springfield XDM 4.5", Glock 20 (10mm), Springfield operator elite (10mm). Forget the 380's as they are not reliable. Only carry the 10mm when in Bear country. The Micro 9 has feed issues with bad mags, which leaves the P365, the P365XL, and the Shield Plus. All 3 of these are very, very reliable and thin & lightweight. But I've narrowed it down to the P365XL to carry inside the waistband at 4 O'clock with a Clinger holster with their pad which makes for easy & comfortable carry. It is very thin, lightweight, reliable, & also has night sights so you can shoot in most lighting conditions. Hitting 10" steel plates at 25 yds. is fairly easy as well. It is easy to shoot with not too much recoil, easy to draw with the longer grip. The only thing bad is the not so great but still good trigger. (All of the guns here to me at least are easy to shoot except the 10mm's with a much higher recoil. The Shield Plus shoots a bit better, but did not come with night sights. That's a big deal to me.

I have many different Glocks and M&P's and carry both. I shoot both a lot. For me they are similar in manual of arms swapping between them is not a problem for me. I do have DA/SA and a 1911 that will carry at my part-time job once in awhile. I also shoot them on a regular basis. Training with all your platforms is very important. Like Clint Smith says You can master your gun but there will be guns in a fight, be student of weapons craft. Paraphrased.
