  • Nancy as never the most consistent LP skater, but she lands 4 triples here including lutz and flip as well as a 3-3 combo with a slight turn out. The salchow was not her friend on this day but she easily won the competition placing ahead of the likes of Marina Kielmann, Oksana Baiul and Maria Butyrskaya. Nancy had beautiful knees and they give her jumps such beauty when they worked. Not a fan of some of the uptempo choreography but she certainly did have her own individual skating style which is very attractive looking back from the vantage point of todays skating.

I never really cared for her back then but, almost 30 years later, I can see what an amazing job the Scotvolds had done with Nancy, putting together a complete package that highlighted her strengths and concealed her weaknesses-from the choreography, the music to her costuming. There have been so many talented skaters come and go over the years, but virtually none has been as thoughtfully put together as Nancy was. I miss seeing these Scotvold skaters perform, and it is too bad that they didn’t leave a prolific coaching apprentice before retiring.

I have never been a huge fan of hers but I think your comments about Scotvolds achievement with this choreography is dead on. It is from this routine that her spiral became THE spiral (until Bobek and Cohen came along).

I also appreciated that Mary herself set the example for her students. She was dressed for success at every competition, always looking elegant, professional, and put together.

I’ve waited years to see this. Thanks!

One of the few times she landed her 3lutz with this program. The second 2A was replaced with a 3Loop at Nationals (First time she landed it) and the '92 Olympics.

I think it was the season before this when her style really started to change and became softer, and she also started paying more attention to creative footwork and original interpretation. For me, this programme is on a whole new creative level compared to her earlier ones, it's unusual to see a skater start and end with slow music. The uptempo music in the middle is also an interesting choice, as it's not from the same movie and I remember Christopher Dean saying he felt it jarred with the rest of her programme, but I like the modern feel and interpretation in that section.

Thank you, you get it. You have an actual artistic quality unlike some others who don't understand some things and then speak bad about it. Unfortunately, people like Christopher Dean outed themselves as not being fully understanding arts and musicality by putting that type of music down.
You understand the angle of Nancy Kerrigan's style, which was not balletic, not flashy but it was a quite classic (50s-70s) but also modern avant-garde. That's what made her unique and interesting. I'm glad you pointed out the middle part of the program, because it was composed by the now-former brother-in-law of the other part of her coaching team, Mary Scotvold. His name is Mark Militano, a former U.S. pair skater with his sister. He composed many of Nancy's program music in the early 90s - the later part of her amateur career. He is very musical and creative and deserves recognition.

Yes! Credit to Nancy Kerrigan for also having nice posture and form even when doing crossovers and jump landings. This is something overlooked by many people, even skaters.

And can you believe during the 1994 Short Program warmup, Verne Lundquist said "Oksana Baiul is the one woman on the ice that Nancy Kerrigan has never beaten in competition..." I thought that remark already was made out of context because the only time she faced her was at the 1993 Worlds... I guess I thought wrong; and I guess NBC was wrong!!

Oksana baiul skated in this competition?

according to wikipedia, yes. There is footage of her competing at the 1992 nations cup as a fourteen year old.

Her triple flip was great, im afraid to say even she landed it the Olympics in 94, it wouldn't have changed the end result. The 5-4 split was going to be in Baul's favor.

The triple flip wouldn't have mattered because the cheque was already in the mail!

Her skating reminds me of Todd Eldrege. I can totally see him skating this program.
Though Nancy probably wishes she had spins like Todd.
