Thank you, I have osteoporosis and am 86 years old;. I continue twith 2 glasses of milk 8 ounces each glass0 6 prunes each day and meat 3 times a day, I did break my hip a year ago and have a hip replacement and doing very well because I exercised 3times a week before that, The recovery was amazing within. 6 weeks and walking well after almost one year.
Thank you for sharing your story as it gives me hope, rather than doom and gloom. I’m 59, workout with heavy weights, eat high animal protein, take HRT and was a runner for 30 years. I’ve just found that I have osteopenia which worries me as my mother had osteoporosis and dementia- died following infection after hip fracture ‘repair’. I don’t want that to be my story and you’ve shown that it can be different. Thank you
I had such a huge dairy portion to my diet and ate red meat, I am a hunter. Prunes? I ate plums in the summer when the fruit was picked. I exercised, weight bearing exercise. Never smoked. I am a fair skinned redhead that sunbathed and loved outdoor activities, lots of Vitamin D. But my Mom had severe osteoporosis and my sister and I do as well. I now take Calcium as well as my high dairy and salmon diet. I take vitamin D, 2000 mg in the summer and 3000 mg in the winter when there is less sun exposure. My sister and I took Alendronate Sodium (Fosamax) when we were Osteopenia. Now we are osteoporosis. My 5' 2" is now 4' 11". My sister that was 5' 4" is now 4' 10 ". Much of the time it is your genes not what you eat or how you live.

Fosamax is only good for 1/2 yr U start losing bone..My younger sister was on ..No benifit after 1 yr.. Changed her diet .VitD,K2/lots of exercise..Walking ,Dancing, keep moving.. I’m 82 still mowing my own lawn ..No broken bones ,No Med ..❤
@@RosemaryDorfer Sound research needs more than a study of one person, though. We each have our inherited genes and are individual. What some can handle, others can't and vice versa. Some do everything wrong and still thrive well into their 90's. Others do everything right and have many health issues. Neither one proves anything on an individual basis. A research needs to have have many subjects with a few variable groups including a placebo group in order to prove anything and that study needs to be double blind to remove bias on the part of the observers or analysts. One person's experience does not prove anything other than fortune.
I come from a line of women who had osteoporosis and am taking meds that put me at risk. I’m trying to get off of supplements by eating healthy and exercising. I have a cup of homemade whole milk kefir every day in my smoothie. The low lactose and high probiotics help with gut health. I try for a diversity of plants (30+ per week) and will start adding some prunes to my diet. I have at least one meal a day with meat protein. So far the Dexa scans have been good. Fingers crossed that a healthy diet will continue the good results.
I’m a70 year old woman with osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. I eat whole milk cottage cheese, yogurt and cheese. I’m also a vegetarian. I do eat eggs though I do t love them. I take a Prolia injection every 6 months. I would love to stop taking 2 calcium supplements a day plus double vitamin d3. I just feel nauseous after these. I have a call in to my doctor to see if I can stop these. I do have pain in my lower back, so I’m trying to walk more and do exercises to help.
I use the A2 whole milk to make my Kefir. I have low sodium so I add salt to everything. I also use pea protein isolate when making my smoothie. The mis contains about 20 grammar of protein per serving. Stay salty. No sugar.
61 (F) Osteoporosis diagnosis 2 years ago. Went to 2 “specialists” whom both agreed that bone growth is impossible for my age and recommended meds. I decided to give it 2 years. I pouted for a year and then went carnivore. DEXA results today = 10% improvement in spine and 3.5% improvement in FNeck left. Looking forward to pulling more levers through supplements, weight training, etc. thanks Dr for ALL you are doing. You give us hope.
This is amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing your motivating success story, we love to see this and hear how you worked towards this improvement. I look forward to hearing more about your bone health journey!
Congrats on the improvements! Do you mean you gave meds two years and then pouted for a year? And then went carnivore? How long ago was that? I got a little confused but am very interested!!
@@goodgardenofpeas The drs recommended meds and I refused. They both said due to my age that it was not possible to improve bone health using diet and exercise. I wanted to prove them wrong. I started tracking my protein intake and then just went full carnivore a year ago. I exercise every day. I walk with a weighted vest and ankle weights in addition to jumping rope. I’m interested in HRT and supplements but need to do my research.
I am part Asian. In my late thirties I had a low-grade fever for about a year and my eyesight was deteriorating. Doctors could not find out the cause. Thanks to an ophthalmologist who sent me to a uveitis clinic, It turned out that my condition was caused by dairy consumption. People of African and Asian descent don't tolerate milk products well.
I have a lactose digesting gene yet any dairy will make my joints tender and inflamed. Possibly an immune reaction to the milk protein casein. So likewise no dairy for me
When people say to me "we are the only species that drink milk as adults," I reply "We are also the only species that cook our food. Just because the animals aren't doing something-does not make it wrong.
I JUST SAY YOU ARE RIGHT. ALSO WE ARE THE ONLY SPECIES THAT LIVE VERY LONG, THE ONES THAT CAN HAVE SEX EVERY DAY, THE ONES THAT HAVE A DIFFERENT BRAIN AND DOMINATE EVERY ANIMAL OTHERWISE WE WOULD NOT BE HERE.
I am (almost) dairy free because besides osteoporosis I have Hashimotos. I eat every other day sheep yogurt with blueberries for breakfast, I am grain free and sugar free, I eat protein everyday with my meaIs, eat grass fed and grass finish meats, pasture raise chicken and eggs, wild salmon and fish buy everything organic as much as I can. I am 65 years wise 106 pounds and lift weights 4 times a week just for 20 minutes because I have to take care of our 26 years old quadriplegic cerebral palsy son who needs 24 hour care. I am supposed to have a bone density test done this month but I am nervous about the results because I am not taking any medication for osteoporosis, I tried reclast once but I decided not to continue I guess I have to bite the bullet and have my test done. I think I am doing the right thing with my diet I don't know what else to do.😢

Hello! I felt obligated to write so if you are interested to see why I'm writing this to you, you could read my long story that I just posted on here in the last hour) 😁 But I would like to comment about Dexa Scans. For this "gold standard" of bone scans, the range "norm" is based on the bones of THIRTY YEAR OLD WOMEN!!! I'm turning 63 this month and even though I think I'm still young, nothing on my body is as good as it was when I was 30!! 🤣🤣🤣 Also, if you read my story, while I was researching everything I was dealing with, I watched a UA-cam video called "Selling Sickness". (I didn't write about the documentary in my previous post), but this yt video is a French documentary about the pharmaceutical industry. There was a whole section about bone density drugs (why I was interested in watching it) and specifically an entire story about the drug Fosamax and a 59 year old woman who went and had a bone density scan and was advised to take the drug Fosamax. I highly recommend watching that video if you have enough interest to... I believe the section of the documentary regarding that woman's particular story was in the second half but you can skip forward to find it. (It's a sad but important story to know IMHO) All that just say that when it was recommended to me to take a bone density drug and I did some research on that drug, I realized that the SIDE EFFECTS are WORSE THAN THE HELP that the drug gives anyone in the first place! I could go on more, but often times the bones end up weaker than they were in the first place. Our bodies have osteoclasts and osteoblasts that renew our bones ongoing....every 10 years our ENTIRE skeleton is renewed because those two functions are continually doing their job! The osteoclasts remove OLD bone and the osteoblasts put down NEW bone. I believe in God and I believe this is a God thing, and it's amazing of course! (just my opinion haha) The drug that was recommended to me slapped down new bone, but NOT necessarily in the correct place! That drug function didn't make sure that the old bone was removed! So that would be like having a crumbling brick foundation and then slap down a bunch of cement on it and say.... oh look it's stronger and more dense now! No. That would not be a strong foundation. Lastly, even though it wasn't on the brochure, some of the bad side effects of the drug that I was recommended to take (by the bone doctor that I only went to once) were ⬇️ pneumonia shingles and osteosarcoma Osteosarcoma in plain English is BONE CANCER! So the very drug that they would recommend to help my bones be stronger and more dense could potentially cause me to have bone cancer! Lastly, everyone should know that when doctors are in medical school currently, they only spend 4 hours learning about nutrition to help their patients have better health but they spend weeks and weeks and weeks on what pharmaceutical products they should prescribe for any and all problems. 🙄 All the best to you 😊 I think knowledge is POWER! From Cynthia in Minneapolis
My favorite lunch is kefir with blueberries, chia seeds and prunes, along with a high quality meat stick. This is my usual after strength training. I’ve just started hopping. I hop 50 reps on each leg. I have osteopenia and I’m so hoping for no more bone loss!!
70 yrs old. Discovered, I must use H.C.L.And digestive enzymes with every meal ( now 1 yr in). 2 yrs on Fortibone, collagen peptides, increased meat and dairy proteins, lots of jumping, power walking 8 miles a week, exercising, all supplements discussed. No increase in femoral neck, slight loss in lumbar. Bloodwork according to doc is good but a little high on cholesterol. I'm discouraged but have decided to get on algaecal. I can't afford anything more.
I’m watching from a different perspective. I was diagnosed with smoldering multiple myeloma. I’m not on treatment but recently suffered two spine fractures. I am trying to strengthen my bones without going on the drugs they want me to. The bones seem to be the one thing I need to focus on right now and would like to do it naturally, if possible. Thank you for your content.
Have you considered a bone marrow transplant for your condition? Is that an option for you? I'm concerned because I watched my father deteriorate from multiple myeloma before some of these new treatments were available. I'm not a medical professional, but I'm in this doctor's online Healthspan where we learn about many ways to treat osteoporosis and stay healthy in general. If I were in your position I would look at all options, not just dietary, for something as serious as multiple myeloma. Good luck to you in your health journey.

@nmandowa My Aunt at 69 was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and told it was in the beginning stages and would be an east process. She entered the hospital (Emory) and on second day of bone marrow stem cell transplant started bleeding out her rectum from the chemo. A day later she vented and put in a coma. By day 5, they told her family to make the decision to unplug her and let her die bc she was now brain dead. Barbaric practice that many can't withstand. Her husband and family were all shocked and devastated. I am now in a similar situation and will definitely not let them do to me what they did to her.
I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 7 and was put on anticonvulsants that depleted my electrolyte levels, including calcium. I found out I had osteoporosis two years ago, and I had just turned 27. It has since improved, but I have a while to go. Thank you for your content!!
You have presented some great information and valid arguments for these three foods as they relate to bone health, i wished that you would have displayed charts, as you spoke, to illustrate your points. Your valuable information would be understood and retained by more people with the use of visual as well as auditory information.
My one question is… who funded the dairy studies, in the past several were by the dairy industry which makes me suspect . Would appreciate any references to the studies so I can review. Thanks
I appreciate your comment. I wrote the following to someone else, and although it doesn't address your question, you might want to have a look. You might already know a lot of this. If so, discard it. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. Always consult your own doctot. Hello, bones are mainly composed of two parts: 1) protein (90% collagenous protein, for example collagen and 10% other proteins, for example "osteocalcin, osteonectin, osteopontin, fibronectin and bone sialoprotein II, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), and growth factors"), and 2) minerals (mainly calcium and phosphorus, but also "significant amounts of bicarbonate, sodium, potassium, citrate, magnesium, carbonate, fluorite, zinc, barium, and strontium). So, to summarize, mainly you need protein, and calcium, phosphorous (less than calcium), potassium, magnesium, zinc, barium, strontium). You can find protein and minerals in short grain brown rice (commercial long grain brown rice is too polished, don't use it); oats, wheat kernels and other grains, plus a variety of dried beans, plus orange/yellow veggies, green leafy veggies, plus a small amount of fermented foods, plus seaweed. Seaweed is chock full of minerals. Some seaweed contains more calcium than milk. Delicious recipes to be found on Japanese, Korean, and Chinese UA-cam channels. Please do your research. Stressing bone (by exercising for example, increases its volume. You may, of course, add some animal protein and fermented milk such as kefir, as tolerated. Fermenting decreases the lactose. So, all is not lost. Take heart. The most important: whole grains, veggies, SEAWEED (a big factor, but you only need a little bit), a few seeds and nuts, animal protein and fermented milk, as tolerated, fermented veggies and beans. And fruit, of course. Thankyou for all this very considered info, I really appreciate the conversation, as my Dr really didn't discuss the nutritional aspect of treatment, just went straight to the supplements🙏
Thankyou , good to hear . Not all milk is the same . I use low pasturized or raw milk and take enzymes . And its high fat . This was very helpful .you tell of the studys which backs it . Very very comforting and helpful . I am ketovor now bmi had gon down .
Wow, I am really in need of a way to build bone. However, I am lactose intolerant. I have been drinking & eating lactose free for years. But about a year ago I developed a horrific cough that caused me non stop coughing with mucus. I had to add a nebulizer & more medications. After much research I learned that dairy & many meats caused mucus to form. Some fish as well. So I have almost completely eliminated these products. My cough is finally under control. If I eat one small lactose free ice cream scoop, within a few hours I am full of mucus & coughing for the next 24 hours.

I too don't do well with dairy and lactose. I also have a mucus reaction, although not as strong as yours. Listen to your body, and do what works best for you. We are all biodiverse.
Total thyroidectomy 2010 he took my parathyroid glands. Some grew back but is so low they put on calcitriol and 1,200 mg calcium. All these yrs until last yr when diagnosed with osteoporosis l started searching natural help refusing fosamax. During this search l found ld been taking the wrong calcium all along just floating in my blood stream😖😖 so ditched the pill and increased dairy, and calcium foods . Don't like prunes so doing boron 125 ml daily and starting your exercises . Thank you Will see if l decide to do another dx scan
I was taking calcium as told to by my doctor for 12 yrs for bones. If you don’t take K2 and D3 with it it calcifies your arteries. I now take plant base calcium. Also eat yogurt, prunes, and other protein. But what is the nest protein and dairy has cholesterol. I’m on cholesterol meds .
One of the best deterrents (and often reversible) to osteoporosis is weight bearing exercises. Diet is not the only way to change dexa results. Many of us (me included) cannot eat dairy and choose to not eat animal products. I have had osteoporosis for several years and switched to a plant based diet 3 years ago. My diet change did not increase my osteoporosis, nor did it improve it. However, including heavy weight bearing exercises has been shown to reverse osteopenia/osteoporosis. I'm scheduled for my dexa later this year and hoping my numbers have improved. Perhaps this is a topic you can discuss in another video.
Hi! Yes, thank you for sharing. You may enjoy this other video on my channel called "The 4 Exercises that Build Bone | NEW STUDY High-Intensity vs Low-Intensity"
So many contradictions nowadays about what to eat and what not. I'm 81 and have been drinking milk since childhood. So far no sign of osteoporosis as far as I know. I eat most things and certainly ate too much sugar when younger.
So pleased I can tolerate every food. Goibg back to my old diet. The diet my family gave me growing up. Thankyou, i feel like you have given back sound eating reasons why. Too much emo around food. Off to buy a grass fed steak, and prunes, i was looking for boron, K2 naturally. I feel empowered to reverse or maintain bone health. Bravo. We really don't get enough info like this online in Oz. Huge thankyou.
Hi I stopped using dairy as I am post breastcancer and dont want any metastisese start growing fast. Could you please do a talk on plantbased foods against osteoporosis?
Great video. Especially since I love prunes but gave them up as my glucose levels are a bit high. But this doctor says they are OK for glucose levels. Will eat them with yoghurt.
Gastroenterologist Doctor told me I am lactose intolerant almost 10 years ago. I love prunes, eat them alot. I do eat chicken, Turkey, but rarely red meat, especially pork or steak. Will occasionally have beef stew, with vegetables like Brussel sprouts, Broccoli , Love veggies over all.
I am 89 and have had osteoporosis for over 25years. I have fosemax for most of that time but for the last three years I’ve been on a shot of prolea 60 mg. Every six months. What I can’t stand is the snapping and cracking of my bones every time I move. I have trouble with my balance so use a walker to get around. One thing about this condition is, you feel wonderful until you move. Abe careful of your teeth If you go on the medication. Talk to your doctor ‼️🇨🇦
Interesting this video pops up just as I wondered if my dairy intake is too much for osteopenia. If I consume nonorganic dairy, then I get congestion. However, I drink full fat organic grass fed dairy and eat full fat Greek yogurt, no congestion. Never heard of prunes helping bones... I'm on it!

Hey Dr. Doug! If one is getting all the essential amino acids from a vegan/vegetarian diet, how does it differ from an animal protein diet? Are the phytochemicals, etc which contribute to bone strength in meat?
Regarding prunes - do you get the same benefit from just eating the plums? Is there a nutrient change once dried other than density? Also, most commercial dried fruit is high in sulfur due to preservatives (I am extremely allergic) but natural sulfur is an important building block, would the higher sulfur content contribute to the positive effects of prunes, if so would you get the same positive effects from organic plums dehydrated at home?

I agree on all of these, but since I'm trying to go low carb, so I take Boron supplements which, in my understanding, is the important ingredient in prunes for building bone. I have improved my bone density 5.6% through diet, walking, and vibration plate. It's not a huge amount, but building bone density is not quick. Thanks Doc!
That’s fantastic progress-It’s great to hear you’re combining diet, walking, and the vibration plate to support your bone health. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing your success story-it’s inspiring and shows that persistence pays off!
O MY GOSH. So I’ve been a healthy, active Vegetarian for 40 yrs. Well I’m 69 and just had my first bone density test. I have the worst osteoporosis now. So I’m switching up my eating, I’m going to incorporate fish and eggs into my eating, but truthfully I just can’t eat red meat…. I think of the animal and it makes me sad and sick:( so that’s my story. As I’ve said, I’m very active, not overweight and just got this horrible news a couple of days ago…O well, another mountain to climb in my life:) but me being a positive person, I will persevere🤗
Thank you for sharing your story-it's clear you’re a strong, positive person! Making dietary adjustments can be tough. You’ve got this, and I admire your perseverance!

What type of doctor is Dr Doug. There are several chiropractors call themselves (3 years post college degree) is why I am skeptical of people who call themselves doctor but not giving their credentials.
Hi! I am a double board certified physician. I completed my training at Stanford University and practiced for nearly a decade in the field of orthopedic surgery. I then left my practice to pursue an additional fellowship and board certification in anti-aging and regenerative medicine.
We just recently Made a friend who is giving us raw milk every week. I make Yogurt in my insta Yogurt yogurt in my instant pot From it. There are times When it doesn't firm up really Good and separates. I put The Straining and I get Loads of whey which we use And yogurt cheese which is absolutely delicious
I went full out on milk and milk products to increase bone density after my osteoporosis diagnosis and 2 years later my cholesterol is very high. How do I do this now that I need to lower my cholesterol?

Wondering what I can do to reverse my osteoporosis &!how to strengthen my bones- Dexa scan was a -3 - I’ve had 1 Prolia injection in Dec. of last year. Missed my 2nd injection due to snags with my insurance so I’m almost 3 months overdue for the 2nd Prolia injection. I really think I do t want to continue with Prolia.
Interesting. I have completely changed my diet since my osteoporosis diagnosis last year. I now consume a lot of Kefir, greek yogurt, take all sorts of supplements and strength train. However, my bone density has deteriorated by 5% according to my recent DEXA scan (same machine, not been calibrated since). I am confused!

Thanks Dr, but since we are seeing these studies in detail, did you also consider that perhaps the harm of the diet based on vegetables and grains as a source of protein could be related to the fact that grains have many phytates and vegetables oxalates? Could it be that in these studies they prepared these foods in the correct way to eliminate these antinutrients?

From the Cancer research UK website: "Eating and drinking milk and dairy can reduce the risk of bowel cancer. But there is no proof it increases or decreases the risk of any other cancer type." The only kind of meat linked to cancer is manufactured meat with chemical additives. Plain meat has no such link.
Instead of prunes, could we just take a boron supplement. Also, would whey protein powder be a good substitute for eating animals since I am a vegetarian. Regarding protein, I have heard others say that too much protein acidifies the body causing the body to leach bone to reduce the acidity increasing fracture risk. Is there any basis to this?

Hi Dr. Lucas, I have a question....by coincidence, I found the typical polish prune butter (ok, it is a commercial product), and I have it with my cottage cheese and some fruit, i also use it instead of sugar to sweeten some desserts. Can the prune butter provide the same good results of the dried prunes? is it worthy to trust that this will happen? My family has always been a big consumer of dried prunes, so they want me to drop the prune butter. Thank you Dr. Lucas

10 prunes exceeds the full low carb daily allowance. And they're high in oxalates. Most prune research I've seen is funded by the California Prune Board. $ay no more. Dairy provides all the daily dietary calcium I need. I'm intolerant to a lot of things but not to yoghurt, milk, cream & most hard cheeses. Love dairy! Hello! I felt obligated to write so if you are interested to see why I'm writing this to you, you could read my long story that I just posted on here in the last hour) 😁
But I would like to comment about Dexa Scans.
For this "gold standard" of bone scans, the range "norm" is based on the bones of THIRTY YEAR OLD WOMEN!!!
I'm turning 63 this month and even though I think I'm still young, nothing on my body is as good as it was when I was 30!! 🤣🤣🤣
Also, if you read my story, while I was researching everything I was dealing with, I watched a UA-cam video called "Selling Sickness".
(It's a sad but important story to know IMHO)
All that just say that when it was recommended to me to take a bone density drug and I did some research on that drug, I realized that the SIDE EFFECTS are WORSE THAN THE HELP that the drug gives anyone in the first place!
(just my opinion haha)
The drug that was recommended to me slapped down new bone, but NOT necessarily in the correct place! That drug function didn't make sure that the old bone was removed!
So that would be like having a crumbling brick foundation and then slap down a bunch of cement on it and say....
oh look it's stronger and more dense now!
No. That would not be a strong foundation.
Lastly, even though it wasn't on the brochure, some of the bad side effects of the drug that I was recommended to take (by the bone doctor that I only went to once) were ⬇️
pneumonia
shingles
and osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma in plain English is BONE CANCER!
All the best to you 😊 I think knowledge is POWER!

I take a calcium, vitamin d, k , boron, magnesium supplement, and vital protein powder in my coffee. I'm glad you talked about the merits of meat. Does that include turkey deli meat (Applegate)? Curious why you recommend full fat yogurt? I eat organic nonfat plain greek yogurt every morning topped generously with raw nuts/seeds. The yogurt has 3g sugars (zero added sugars), 18g protein, 7g carbs. What benefit does the full fat yogurt provide?
The full fat dairy products are rich in vitamin k2 mk4.

Thanks Doc!
What’s a vibration plate?

I feel alot stronger since eating more animal protein.
Glad to hear that! Thank you for sharing your experience

Also wondering about increased cancer risk with dairy and more animal products/meat.
From the Cancer research UK website: "Eating and drinking milk and dairy can reduce the risk of bowel cancer. But there is no proof it increases or decreases the risk of any other cancer type."
The only kind of meat linked to cancer is manufactured meat with chemical additives. Plain meat has no such link.
Hi! Checkout the video on my channel called "Will Increasing Protein for Bone Health Cause other Health Problems? The Untold Benefits of Meat"
Eat organic and regenerative.
Maybe you should listen to Dr. Ken Berry
No. It will not acidify your body. That`s a myth.

Lucas
