And as they walk away, discussing mercy, the Doctor has a Dalek weapon in his hand and Davros has a Sonic Screwdriver in his.
The Dalek did say mercy to River. However the Doctor was not there so he wouldn’t have heard it.
Enzophanis1892 at the time I objected to the Dalek asking for mercy as it seemed out of dalek character. But it makes perfect sense now, due to this episode
Nor would River have told him about it, because she knew he wouldn't have approved of her killing it.
Clara/dalek said she show mercy not ask for mercy
He healed River 's hand when She broke her hand getting away from angel
TheAcworthdude Using regeneration energy that by all rights he shouldn’t have.
I forgot just how damn GOOD the scenes with the Doctor and Davros are. Some phenomenal acting and writing.
I feel like the reveal that they were both lying ruins it abit, they were both just talking crap
@@gallohalt I think that they play a "truth or lie" game, and it's allowed to us to decide which is the truth.
I think about the "[compassion] will kill you in the end" "I wouldn't die of anything else" exchange a lot. Superb.
@@han5234 superb!
I think him opening his burned out empty eye sockets and being disconnected from his life support system for a long period of time was just pretty stupid
It's amazing that this is the first time The Master and Davros have met each other. The eye-poking was hilarious.
Fr especially since they are the biggest enemies the Doctor has faced Davros creator of the daleks which he hates to the core and The Master an old friend who is A sort of evil version of the Doctor
I think I heard one of the reasons for the sonic sunglasses was that Capaldi wanted to make it easier to cosplay as the doctor, since buying the screwdriver was actually a bit expensive.
£15
That's also why all his Twelfth Doctor costumes are really simplistic and cheap to recreate, especially the hoodie look in Series 9 and 10. Even the fancy red jacket he was promoted as wearing in Series 9 only appeared in _Face the Raven_ and _Heaven Sent._
Specifically for children from poorer backgrounds, yeah
It makes sense, capaldi grew up being a fan of doctor who. He probably knew firsthand how awful it was to have to try and buy costumes for cosplaying
@@jplegend98 I don't know the conversion rate but $15 feels like a lot you can get a drink for 2
Yeah, Julian Bleach, the actor who plays Davros, also has the distinct honor of being the only character to appear in Doctor Who, as Davros, Torchwood, as The Ghostmaker, and Sarah Jane Adventures, as the Nightmare Man. He was also the ballet instructor in Black Widow's flashback in Age of Ultron.
Scott Hadden
He’s also the Grand Master on a children’s spy show M.I.High.
@@ab830 oh shittttt used to watch that when i was a kid, always wanted to see his face xD and the nightmare man, such a good monster him and the trickster scared the shit outta me
Too bad he wasn’t in Class.
@@ab830 I know. But since they're not from the UK, they might actually have known him from Age of Ultron.

Damn, I never made that connection!
I loved the Doctor's line about how if on a good day, he tries really hard, then he is The Doctor.
The line about Missy's daughter has always intrigued me: "...when my daughter..." what? Died? Married the Doctor's son? Are they both Susan's grandparents? Or, more obscurely, John and Gillian's?
6:33 Eric: The Daleks has been saying "I love you" this entire time.
Dammit Eric! Now that just makes it more sad...
Alright, now let's all picture Eric's face next week when he realizes another two-parter is coming !
And three weeks hence. Then 5. The potential escalation has me giddy.
I'm so excited for their reaction to the Doctors speech about war
@@SandSlash242
And how many seconds in eternity.
The only good story in series 9 is Heaven Sent. He was so much better in series 10.
@Lewis Heald I guess your right, series 10 didn't really have any good stories apart from the last story and perhaps a few others. But his characterisation is a lot better in series 10, just wish they characterised 12 like that from the start. Or characterise him as he was in series 10 from the start but darker and more manipulative like 7 then end in series 10 as he was like the 5th doctor.
When I first saw this one, The sonic sunglasses made me cringe and I hated them but now they’re iconic to his doctor and I personally really like them
Shades are cool! ...as 11 might say :)
same
i would hope they got rid of the Screwdriver like the 5th Doctor
I liked them more after learning why they were introduced. Peter Capaldi asked to have them so that children from families with less money could have something to wear and pretend to be the Doctor with, instead of having to buy expensive merchandise.
I think after he rode in on a tank playing an electric guitar, he deserves the sonic swag XD
This is one of my all time favorite seasons. Such STRONG writing.
I prefer series 10.
Agreed - in fact, I enjoyed all three of Capaldi's series, which is why he's right at the top of my "best Doctor" list, along with Tom Baker.
@@ftumschk Even the people who didn't like his seasons and average era still would have him in the top of their lists because of the peaks of his era (top 5 story average). In terms of peak-era, he exceeded Jon Pertwee, Christopher Eccelston and Patrick Troughton with stories like Heaven Sent, World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls, Mummy on the Orient Express, Flatline and Listen.
If you want strong writing watch Series 1-4
@@J_Tevo I really don't mind Hell Bent. It's not great, but it's nowhere near as bad as some people make out.
The thing I love about the titles in this season, is that they are all complementary, and I'm glad that you guy notice that. Here, the Witch is Missy and Clara is her Familiar, obviously. But in the previous episode, the Apprentice is actually Davros. We see this with more clarity at the end, when he learns about mercy as a child, and took the screwdriver for him (the doctor didn't take back when he saved mini Davros). We can also see theses parallels when Davros asked The Doctor if he is a good man (just remember the doctor asking the same question to Clara in season 8). Is also funny to notice that while the Magician is the good guy, and the Apprentice is bad guy, the same cant be said about the other duo. The Witch is the bad guy, and the Familiar the good guy, and like Missy said, when you mixed that up, everyone is a Hybrid.
Oh, and about the "Mercy thing", I think Moffat adressed this in a interview. When that Dalek begged River for mercy in season 5, people were not okay with it, because it didn't seem natural, so in this episode he kind of explain how they knew the concept. And the Doctor wasn't in the room when that Dalek said it that time, so no retcon here.
two titles that on their own are cool, but together makes it better. its kinda like a hybrid
For me this two-part story is one of my personal all time favourites and is what made Peter Capaldi my personal favourite Doctor alongside Tom Baker. Davros is my fav Who villain period; if Missy/the Master was the dark mirror, Davros is the complete opposite and I thought this story was an amazing, powerful exploration of two bitter arch-enemies who will never fully understand one another because of two very different ideologies yet are brought together here and are shown more as equals than they like to admit. I particularly loved the imagery of the final scene with the Doctor and child Davros holding hands on the Skaro battlefield with the Doctor holding a Dalek gun while Davros is holding the sonic screwdriver. Julian Bleach just killed it as always, but this is where Capaldi completely won me over. His scenes with Davros were astounding, and his speeches about compassion and mercy were brilliantly sold. I would never have thought any Doctor would rival Baker as my personal favourite, but Capaldi did here. IMO, this two-part story is a modern classic.
Yup, I'm with you there. Tom Baker and Peter Capaldi are my top two as well.
Lmao, there's like only one episode this season that isn't a multi episode arc. Eric's gonna be so pissed
Indeed - and it's the weakest episode of the series for me.
And the only one that wasn’t was one of the worst episodes of the show
ftumschk what one is it
@@Ash-cb2li Sleep No More
@@peterguy986 Yes. That's the one.
I just love how much they love Twelve and Missy 💕
Capaldi wanted people to easily be able to cosplay the 12th Doctor with minimal funding, hence the sonic sunnies.
I heard that too. That was a nice thought on his part.
He has been a fan since the originals, he went in as a fan so puts them first when he approaches his character.
Something lost in most IP's these days 😥
The tenuous alliance between Missy and Clara was so fun.. Missy’s unpredictable and crazy so her nature can make things more interesting to watch .
The dialogue between The Doctor and Davros is very well done too ..them becoming possibly friends at the end was intriguing but it’s hard to trust Davis but I’m glad that the Doctor never fully bought it either .
Such a strong two part premeire !!.
I've been so ready for this season for so long can't wait for more!
The mercy bit to me seemed to be about, Daleks can beg for mercy in order to survive, so they know the word, but they never show mercy to others, so the surprising part was showing mercy. Otherwise the other Daleks who knew it were also secretly Clara/another person inside.
The Clara Dalek was asking for mercy though, not showing it. So though we've seen them plead for it previous to this, to me the idea is that it's as a consequence of this episode. Timey-wimey ;).
@@anonymes2884 She said "I show mercy" though. So she did.
@@AnnekeOosterink Fair point (she both asks for _and_ shows it) but the Doctor is surprised _before_ she says that so the surprising thing to him _isn't_ that a Dalek can show mercy, it's that a Dalek even knows the concept.
CLARA DALEK: Mercy. Mercy.
DOCTOR: You shouldn't be able to say that.
CLARA DALEK: Mercy.
DOCTOR: That word shouldn't exist in your vocabulary. How did Davros teach you to say that?
CLARA DALEK: Mercy.
DOCTOR: Why aren't you trying to kill me?
CLARA DALEK: Mercy.
CLARA [in the Dalek]: Because I would never kill you. You are the last person I would ever kill.
CLARA DALEK: I show mercy.
DOCTOR: I'm putting the gun down. Open your casing.
One of the Best Dalek-Episodes of New Who
Julian Bleach is not really a super famous actor, and I've really only seen him in 2 or 3 proper roles, but the man is *incredibly* expressive, and has a very unique and striking face. He does a fantastic job of bringing a blob of makeup like Davros to such vivid life. Michael McElhatton was great on Game of Thrones, but Julian would have been my personal pick to portray Roose Bolton, based on the description in the books.
It was rivers wrist who broke, and then she slaps him for being sentimental. Shes able to use and receive direct regeneration energy because she was conceived in the time vortex which ended up mutating her genes to be similar to those of a timelord.
TARDIS HADS(Hostile Actions Dispersion System) appears in the episode "Cold War" too, but I think that the first time it appears is with the second Doctor.
A little differently though; previously it's been the "Hostile Action Displacement System", where the TARDIS literally just leaves and reappears somewhere else. He seems to have upgraded it since the TARDIS reappeared on the other side of the globe in Cold War :)
The Master always survives, its very rarely explained how... he just 'escapes'.
True
As any Popular Villain: Only the Ratings can kill him
This isn't the first time humans have used a dalek casing as a disguise. There is canon precedent, at least in Planet of the Daleks from the Third Doctor's era. Also I'm pretty sure I've seen a video of the First Doctor popping out of the lid of a dalek.
I think that was from the Space Museum...it wasn't a real dalek, just a shell of one.
4:00 "Every miner needs a canary" - I saw some blank faces. For info, coalminers used to take caged canaries underground as gas detectors, canaries being more sensitive to carbon monoxide than humans. If the bird fell ill or died, the men would know to get the hell out of there.
In the "Big Bang" episode the re-activated Dalek does beg River for Mercy and she says "say it again" and "one more time" before shooting it with her meson blaster gun in the eye stalk. Presumably since Davros has been taught about Mercy before and after then by the 12th Dr.
Still find it funny how that other chair of skaro has its own wiki page.
Ooof I love that Lono finished this video with Missy’s theme from Big Finish
I wondered what that was! It sounds great. Is the Missy Big Finish stuff any good?
You should watch Genesis of The Daleks which shows the beginning of Davros
The original Davros really got it.
I am so happy they are appreciating Missy's brilliance! :D
2:40 "There's no tree!"
Well, not any more. Missy had to do a LOT of whittling.
They speaking about the sonic sun glasses, and sonic screwdriver popping up, and Aaron with the poker face.
im not a fan of this series but i love this story. Yes the daleks arent as scary as they use to be but this is such a fun and emotional story with missy and davros.
didnt make sense why clara never just thought "open the shell" not even accidentally like if she had thought "how can i open the shell?" or "I wish the shell would open"
gallohalt she was panicking
If you liked the Davros and Doctor scenes so much, there is a Big Finish audio story that basically did the same thing but dialled it up to 11 and went into the back story of Davros and how he got to be the way he is. It's a great story and one I think you would enjoy very much. Here is a link to the opening of the story - ua-cam.com/video/q5pEJ9mwauI/v-deo.html
Well this is way earlier than expected!
This is my favourite Series (Season) of the Revamped Doctor Who. Its the only one I own on DVD.
It's my personal headcanon that everything davros said from 7:01 until the doctor decided to give davros that bit of energy was sincere.
Weird to think this is the last proper Dalek story until ‘Resolution’ 😳
That’s crazy... never thought about that!
Wait what if the clever idea missy had at the end was to fuse cybermen and time lords together like she did in the timeless child.
I spent most of the time watching Calvin go through this......brilliant!!!!!!
"The evil Doctor with a companion" If you want to see a somewhat more tragic version of this, might I recommend the Big Finish War Master audio series...
The Tom Baker was the first time Davros appeared and apparently got offed.
"Supreme Dalek, your sewers are revolting!!!"
Peter Capaldi is amazing. He'll always be my Doctor 💞
Can't wait for the best two parter next week!
and the best opening the week after

Dear Blind Wave: Please watch some more Classic Doctor Who, and please watch: 'The Tenth Planet,' before: 'Series 10.' That would be great! :)
If Michelle Gomez ever did voice acting I would want her to play the Joker
As a makeup artist i can tell you that it can be really hard to emote under those prostetics. There are great actors who even improve they'r acting under makeup. Doug Jones for example. He was the pale man in pans labyrinth.
Love from switzerland
Well davros was exterminated at the end of genesis of the daleks. But his life support systems out him into stasis whilst it repaired his body. Years later the 4th doctor and his companion Romana landed randomly on Skaro and find him. He eventually gets cryogenically imprisoned and isn't seen until the 5th doctor story resurrection of the daleks. He escapes. Then he's seen again in the 6th doctor story revelation of the daleks he gets captured by renegade daleks led by the supreme dalek. He somehow escapes again and his next appearance is in remembrance of the daleks with the 7th doctor. He somehow escapes his ship blowing up and isn't seen again until the 10th doctor. But he has had plenty of big finish audio adventures.
I say when you finish all of doctor who you react to some of the Garostudio’s doctor who tributes. He really is *the* doctor.
Yessssss
i think that the reason that the river song dalek said mercy because of the doctor saving davros, for the same reason that claras dalek said mercy. and the doctor didnt notice it before because the dalek said it to river
I really hope that following the season finale someone prompts the guys to listen/react/review The Holy Terror.
The moment of understanding would be magnificent to see.
Is that the one where Frobisher becomes king?
@@MrToastBenstudios Yes. :D
Clara said to Danny that she would never say “I love you” again, to anyone else. She said it in the Dalek.
No offence but why do Americans pronounce Davros as "Dav-rose" despite it being said correctly in the episodes? :)
Odd, isn't it? I've noticed they do the same with the name Crowley from Good Omens too.
2 years late but it's the same with pronouncing Clara as "claire-a", makes me cringe
The freaky looking Dalek with the funny top was the Special Weapons Dalek from the Seventh Doctor episode.
Cant wait for heaven sent
A shame you didn't watch the prelude to series 9
There’s a prelude? Probably one of the many minisodes I have no idea about! 😂
@@stankey69 You can actually find it on youtube in the BBC channel
Oh no clara is a dalek again
My favorite story
Evil Doctor and a companion...yes Eric yes! Clara and Missy were so good together. Didn't care for the sonic sunglasses the first time I watched this series but they grew on me.
and those conversations between the doctor and davros are so good
I was under the impression that the darlek saying mercy wasn’t because of Clara, it was just the closest thing in its vocabulary database that it could translate to. In other words, Darleks can all say mercy, hence one saying it to River. The Doctor might not have heard it before, I’m not sure, but it would explain his confusion. More than anything he was just curious why Davros would programme such a word into their vocabulary, only to realise he needs to be the one to inspire that choice.
Thomas Meehan My mistake. I’ve always had terrible spelling. Guess that’s what happens when I’ve not paid much attention to Doctor Who for quite some time. Forgotten my basic Who spelling.
That being said, ignoring the point of my theory and saying I’m not a “Whovian” (which I never claimed to be, but yes I would consider myself one) because a spelling mistake I made when typing something in hurry on my phone... was it really necessary to call me out like that. Even just correcting the spelling mistake would have been perfectly fine, but why you felt the need to shake your head and kick me whilst I’m already down one mistake by is rather unnecessary and makes you seem unintentionally elitist, which I’m sure you are not.
Anyway, thank you for pointing out my mistake. All the best, and here’s to the next reaction 😄
Wasn't the OG sonic an Allen wrench with a light bulb that just unscrewed things, and that he just got at some point in the future?
Davros screaming "Get...me...SARFF!" is so much funnier when you look up the Urban Dictionary definition of the word 'sarff'.
Missy explaining how she survived just shows the difference between her and the doctor. The doctor is great att improvising and comin gup with solutions on the spot. He rushes in and then figures it out later. Meanwhile Missy/ the Master plan everything out. They create these long and complicated plans to beat the doctor. That's why the doctor always wins. No plan is perfect and the doctor will always find the flaw.
Michelle Gomez who plays Missy is brilliant on the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina too. Such a great actress!
The doctor knew all along what davros was doing so he played along. I love love this story. It’s my second favorite 12 doctor ep. you have davros history incorrect. Davros was introduced in the Tom Baker episode. It ended with the appearance of the daleks killing him but we never saw it onscreen
Ok... These boys *seriously* need to watch some Classic Who. Aaron is getting things just that little bit wrong that I feel the need to sit them all down for a PowerPoint presentation on the History of the Daleks...
Axis77 I agree. I wish they’d seen genesis of the Daleks before this one.
Not just classic who, Aaron is constantly getting info wrong and he's supposed to have seen all new who. He keeps correcting Eric on things even though Eric is actually correct
Are you guys ever going to watch Gotham? Amazing show and think you’d love it if you haven’t seen it. Would make a good reaction series too
one of my fav episodes of all doctor who, Clara and Missy have that very fun chemistry
They got rid of the best line! "I suppose the real question is where did i get the cup of tea. Answer, im the doctor, deal with it."
And of course "Anyone for Dodgems?" Although they probably wouldn't have gotten that one. :-(
Fortunate to have watched from the very first ever episode and from memory it was always a long held assumption for the viewer that Time Lord society was a reflection in many ways of our own but this is the first time that the Master in particular has referred specifically to his own particular offspring although I have a vague recollection that an episode featured a member of the Time Lords feeling entitled to a certain position because of his 'geneology''.
Awesome. Loved this story. :)
So, "wearable technology".
Your thoughts?
Bluetooth earpods.

I'm going to guess there's some fanfic out there that posits that Missy/The Master's daughter mentioned in this episode was also The Doctor's previously mentioned daughter.
I’m so sad right now.
I wonder who made me frown
My face is so frowny
The more I watch this series opener the more I find myself having the opinion that Davros should have been sincere with all he said and truly, permanently, died. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike what they did at all, I just feel it would have been a better and stronger story if he had actually just... died. that was the story; The Doctor and Davros reconciling after all the centuries of fighting. It would have been brave and risky to kill off a character for good like that, but it would have been great in my opinion. What could have been.
MayRey as I watched it didn’t feel right for him to go out as the doctors buddy. He had no sorrow or regret When it turned out it was all a ruse it felt better story wise
Fyi The Daleks origin:
The Daleks were a humanoid species called the Dals who lived on Skaro with another race called the Thals. When the Doctor first landed on Skaro the Thals said The Dals used to be teachers and philosophers. The two races were at war which caused a short but destructive nuclear fallout which left the Dals mutant. They later where confined to inner city Skaro, these Dals are known as the "Dalek Forefathers". The Dals became known as Daleks hereafter, using electronic means of power to survive.
In later Classic Who the Thals and Daleks continue their rivalry up until The Fourth Doctor story Genesis of The Daleks.
Not a big deal, but I hear it every time: they're pronouncing Davros like Davos with an r. The way the characters say it, it rhymes with Ross, not Rose.
you are thinking of the 10th doctor's severed hand. he sent spare regeneration energy after healing into that hand and then donna touched it and then we had the Doctor-Donna thing plus the half human doctor "clone"
Think he's actually thinking of River with The Angels In Manhattan (Amy's last episode)
@@cutthr0atjake they mentioned martha. who was involved in the episode with the metacrisis and the doctor-donna
@@brony4869 Aaron says something like "Someone's hand got broken and they fixed it... I wanna say Martha" at 13:34 ish. He's just misremembering the scene where 11 fixes River's broken wrist, as cutthr0atjake says.
If you guys take suggestions from the comments can I suggest a few?
Can this be made for free full length since it's a part 2 of the series opener
Could you guys please do reactions for the maze runner movies and/or a TV series called 12 monkeys
Favorite story from series 9.
When i first saw this i thought we'd get to see fully regenerated daleks come out of the tanks but nope, same old daleks with no real difference from getting the regeneration energy =/
Seeing how much you like 12 & Davros here, *you NEED to do Genesis of the Daleks!*
It's a shame you edited the shit out of the eye opening scene as it was one of the key moments of the episode but whatever. Great pair of episodes, one of my favourites ever and a rare example of part two being just as good as part one.
Missy is my fav dr.who character, daleks are my 2nd

I still believe the hybrid is Davros after receiving regeneration energy
Eric : dav-row-se
Me : lmao.
For me, the acting and emotion behind this episode is perfection. It’s just……i wish it wasn’t just another ploy. I would’ve rather either this actually be the end of Davros or they expand upon the strange sense of respect they have. It’s so well done that it kind of gets ruined by trying to make it conclude like just another episode
If you love Michelle Gomez as Missy, you gotta watch her on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix
Does Clara have the memory's from all the versions of Her ?
TheAcworthdude no because those were copies of her. Clara Oswald is the original but has no memories of her other million copies that aré scattered throughout time and space

Oh right, the only teeny tiny blemish on this otherwise fantastic episode... The sonic sunglasses lol. Though in hindsight, knowing that they were more of a fad than a prper long term replacement, they don't seem all that terrible now.
To be fair to them, I believe that Capaldi asked for them simply to make it easier for people to cosplay as the Doctor. Which frankly is a really cool reason to have them even though I don't particularly like them.
I liked em honestly lol
Thing is, a few essential elements aside, _everything_ is "a fad" in 'Doctor Who'. If you don't like something, just wait a while. Change is the one constant. I guess as newer fans come onboard they have to keep learning that though, which is understandable.
Wow. I went to watch this without signing in figuring it'd be no problem. There ended up being at least 5 minutes of commercials that you don't have the option of skipping ahead on. I signed in and went right to the reaction. At least 1/6 of the review worth of commercials before it. Just stupid. I wonder if you can put a complaint in about it. Otherwise, I like the detailed reaction as always. I bet they were really surprised by the end of the season.
