First seven hours of this video: This is a pretty cool run! Eighth hour: Why does this feel so familiar though? Ninth hour: Wait, I watched this live... I even donated and they read out my comment... I am not a smart man.
@@Papercut625 do you really call that stupid when the other option was a Clinton? A woman who literally stayed with her predator husband and tried to destroy the lives of his accusers? Then proceeded to play the ill fight for women card?
I never knew there existed a RPG speedrun marathon before watching this video, and let me just say that you have new fan for the next event! Great runner, great couch and great cause! You guys rock!
I’m watching through this again, because I was trying to remember what actually started it. Anyone remember when it came up? I want to be sure I don’t miss it.
Thank y’all for inspiring me to give IX and VIII another shot. While I liked VIII a lot more, IX definitely proved to be a really fun game with memorable characters and some great music. I’m ashamed to say that my younger self wrote this game off as garbage for children. Was so wrong.
Thinking about it, I never really used equips to protect against anything. I reall only treated them as ways to learn new abilities. It's neat how much more you need to know the games to speedrun them. But I'm definitely more in the completionist camp. It breaks my heart every time I watch these runners overlook chests. But I'm learning to become a more efficient person.
they play final fantasy...try getting wakka's best weapon in 10 and tell me you don't have patience. the real lazy ones are the runners who do the overwatch tutorial
I remember playing physically throwing a fit. After I spent 60 attempts trying to kill Nova Dragon. I have no clue to this day on how I freaking failed so badly. I had no guides and the internet was rather non-existent at the time in my life. So it was all trial and error. Yet I beat him and went on to just destroying the final boss. I took more pride killing Nova Dragon than the final boss.
This is easily my favorite game in the history of ever. As soon as I get internet in my new house, I plan to begin speed running this game. Wish me luck, as my biggest problem will be forcing myself to go fast rather than sit back and enjoy the adventure
They sing in the finale video of the marathon. There’s also some great voice acting for the final FMV of the game. Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t found it already.
I was always under the impression that the rare steal increases in chance once you broke a certain hp percentage. Like after the enemy is lower than 50% max hp the rare steal item goes from example 10% to 25%. I’m probably wrong but I def played many playthrus believing that lol
It took me a long time to complete this game the first time. Not due to inexperience (it was a factor) but because my copy had a defect on disc 3 that would crash right at the moment when Kuja destroys pandemonium.
I put this game on the shelf for so long because I got my discs as a hand-me-down and one of the earliest FMV (the one right after the rooftop section with Puck and Vivi) always froze on me. It has to be at least 4 years until I learn from gamefaqs that you could skip FMVs by opening my PSX tray and thankfully the rest of the discs work perfectly
Always fun to see my favorite FF being run. Why don't the runners approve of the new remastered edition? Wouldn't being able to remove random encounters and/or use turbo mode be something they'd be all over?
Would've been nice if the devs would've programmed a time save where, if you look at the ticket in the key items before giving it to the ticketmaster, vivi will just skip that objective completely.
Rémi Desrochers-Guérin it works but it is banned (along with any hardware manipulation) by the SDA for official speedrun submissions, which is why we do not do it.
As Kevin said it's banned by the community. Even though nowadays they don't really need to go by SDA rules for RTA stuff, opening the disctray runs the risk of crashing the game, which means that runs would be less about skill and more about "who can get lucky with the disctray FMV skips on a good run".
I am a casual watcher and it would be great if the marathon couch commentary focused less on memes and more on explaining the story and detail of the run. Overall cool run.
They do a fantastic job of explaining literally every trick done (even ones failed) and they also explain the story as plot points come up...? What more do you want? They even talk about old strats they used to do in the run, lol.
Well, it is because some computers push the program too hard for some odd reason. Though I rarely have issues with a lot of the old FF games. Maybe it is because I am not overclocking my GPU or stressing my system. *Shrugs* I never understand people who bitch about having computer issues with games. Though it could be a hardware thing to why they don't allow the PC version. Also fear of cheating. As it is a hell of a lot easier to cheat on a PC version than the console version. That includes Emulators. As there was some past runs in other games. That ran on Emulators but a lot of them were removed after rule changes and also a lot of issues with people trying to get World Records through cheating. So they straight up said depending on the game. If it is an old one. It will be played on the hardware it was made for. Meaning consoles for a lot of these games. And very strict guidelines with PC games. All to keep it fair and really make the feeling great when someone does make that World Record.
They just choose not to run PC because the menus and text skipping are terrible and were designed for touchscreen with iOS. Unfortunately, FFVIII is the only old school FF with an actual decently made PC port, if you can handle the terribly low-quality MIDI music that is. In FFVIII's case, PC is actually the go-to version and the most competitive category. It actually has nothing to do with how easy it is to cheat. It's because FFIX on PC is a shite port because Square-Enix are stupid.
I played the PC version and didn't have much problems with it. Though the only problem that bothered me is that the controller was pressed twice which made certain parts annoying. Though I managed to get around it. Besides that. Everything else was pretty nice.
Sadly FFX is unskippable. Which I kind of refused to play it for a second run through myself. As really you can only stand the awful "Laugh Scene" once...No amount of muting will remove it. Though it is a good story regardless. Yet for Speedrunning it is awful.

lets be real, ff IX cutscenes probably pushed the ps1 to its absolute limits in terms of graphical capabilities. hell, these cutscenes even look better than a lot of ps2 cutscenes I've seen.

You're right about that comment at about the 3 minute or so mark, changing the screens to blue is essential. If you don't like blue text and menu boxes, you are not a real fan and should be sterilized for the good of the franchise.
Because they butchered the menus and ruined all the frame rates. Menuing is horrible because of the lag, and there's also the random double inputs that happen, and battles no longer have dynamic frame rates which means 15fps menus. All of those also apply to VII and VIII. The only good thing the Steam version allows you to do is speed the game up while on-screen countdown timers still run at normal speed.
Run Start: 0:20
Tojju and Muttski are the best duo in speedrun commentary, prove me wrong.
Nah, I agree. My favorite speedrunners alongside spikevegeta.

Played this game like 5 times, have reached level 99 all items all abilities and I am still here watching a speedrun of it GOD DAMN IT
Same but well more like 3 to 4 times since I was 8, to now but never really got excalibur II
when you beat a game 5 times without learning Flee
Try Excalibur 2 run and low level to the end boss fight.

Never thought of using Night with Quina, didn't realize how strong it is.
FOR THE RECORD: Black Waltz is not *one* enemy you fight multiple times. There are three separate versions.
This is very important information.
But you fight black waltz three multiple times
That's right! Three different versions!!
I can't believe someone actually managed to beat FF9 with only average party level 30... This was incredible.
Believe it or not, people have beaten it with everyone at level 1 before, including Ozma, Hades and Quale.
I was always under the impression that the rare steal increases in chance once you broke a certain hp percentage. Like after the enemy is lower than 50% max hp the rare steal item goes from example 10% to 25%. I’m probably wrong but I def played many playthrus believing that lol
That would be a nice mechanic to help steal stuff but unfortunately it doesn't help in this one!
Miss this game so much. This was a game when i was 10 :(
Should get it and play it again then! It's on more platforms than ever, PC, Vita, PS4/3, Mobile, etc
I recommend playing on PS4 or PC, maybe the Switch it you're feeling frisky.
It took me a long time to complete this game the first time. Not due to inexperience (it was a factor) but because my copy had a defect on disc 3 that would crash right at the moment when Kuja destroys pandemonium.

Never realized how overpowered 'Charge!' was o.O
So... the song?
There is a trick in PS1 that makes cutscenes skippable, that would save a lot of time
I don't think disk swap is allowed when speedrunning this game
Love this game my fav FF
Always fun to see my favorite FF being run. Why don't the runners approve of the new remastered edition? Wouldn't being able to remove random encounters and/or use turbo mode be something they'd be all over?
Its menus arent nearly as smooth and it's harder to move around.
Have a question if anyone is still monitoring comments on this video. Why do you try to 'escape' after inputs during battles?
I think they said it gives them a better chance to have a short escape animation
8:11:30 Why not make Armant and Garnet gain experience?

this line hit my ear weird, because they mentioned the charity is NAMI..
Would've been nice if the devs would've programmed a time save where, if you look at the ticket in the key items before giving it to the ticketmaster, vivi will just skip that objective completely.
