Thank you chuck this video has helped me out immensely. I bought my Fantom 8 this past November and hadn't really been able to use this monster until recently. So now I'm playing catch up (everything from os updates to features) just got the vocoder working this thing is awesome. Look forward to watching and learning more from your videos. Thanks again!
as usual, Chuck, you give a warm and friendly approach and explanation, which is greatly appreciated....my only issue, listening to the vocoder, I am laughing to myself, because I cannot come up with a single thought of application where I would use that! LOL....but that's just me....
Good video. I have what I hope is a quick question. On the new Fantoms, is there any way to record straight audio - say, adding background vocals to a song, and NOT having them sound like a robot or noise or whatever? It would be great if the Fantom (or some other workstation) would allow you to add mic in audio for bg vocals with perhaps some pan, reverb, chorus, and pitch correction tools. do the Fantom 6/7/8's do this? And if not, is there another board that's more "vocal in" friendly?
hello! thanks for the review! this is way more helpful than Roland could ever be. I have a question regarding the storage, can I install all the expansions and modules on an external device? 2 gb is not enough for samples and the pack for me at least. Please let me know!
The SN sounds are all in a row if you use Category:All. The major point of the SN sounds are the controller-activated articulations. You can also switch articulations in the Tone edit screen.
So Chuck I believe I have pretty much decided to get this Fantom instead of the K2700. Now my question: when I purchase a Fantom within the next 2-3 months, will the one I get already have all of the updates installed that you mentioned here and any others as well? In other words, will I still have to hook up to my computer and get any further updates or will the current updates come already installed?
I dunno; how do you feel these supernatural sounds stack up against the patches on the Kronos? I find most of the Roland sounds lack some life or vibrancy compared to those on the Kronos.
Im still trying to choose between the Roland Fantom 8 and Yamaha Montage 8 in White i just play at home and would love your input on the best piano sample there are no stores near me that stock theme currently have the Yamaha CP88.
There is no such thing as "the best", only what's best for YOU... and you're the only one capable of making that decision. If there's no stores near you that stock these units, then listen to as many online demo's as you can of each. I have a long-standing policy here of never making personal recommendations of any kind (or answering what *I* would choose). The entire purpose of this channel is to promote education so that viewers can make their own informed decisions.
Lennon & McCartney Fanatic In 2018, used Sony MDR1000X headphones, direct wired, to audition Yamaha, Roland, Kawai and Korg stage pianos. (Can't remember the models, but all except the Kawai were their newest ones.) My only criteria being acoustic grand piano. Roland's V-piano really did not cut it on authenticity. All have pleasant sound, but with these headphones, Korg's Grand stage was a clear winner. This auditions only piano, not the 100s of other sounds, which would make it more difficult to find a winner. I bought the Korg Grand Stage, and it's acoustic piano sounds are even better through Pioneer SE-Master 1 headphones. It has about 400 other sounds, covering everything else. It's not a synth, so sound editing is limited to a basic contextual settings, which is fine with me. I still think it was a great buy, and I have not heard better pianos yet on any other product.
there are three things they need to improve the sequencer: the first, as you said, is to have all the standard timings available, my Motif has every single one of them....the second is their pattern is limited to only 32 measures...for people who just loop over and over, this is not an issue, but for those of us who do traditional pop and rock songs, it is woefully low. And the third is that there are only 8 tracks: most sequencers are a 16 x 16 grid, 16 sections, or tracks, or whatever you call them, with 16 instruments each, but the Fantom only has 8 of these......I am hoping they correct these deficiencies soon.....
Roland is catching up but Korg Kronos is the king of workstations. Old ones like mine boots slowly, but Kronos 2 is SSD drive and will boot faster. I like the Zen Core concept and the ability to transfer tones, or download for either Fantom or Jupiter ZenCore machines. Since I have Kronos am more likely to go to the Jupiter X. So many great synths out there and just ordered a Wave State. Fantom is on my list but very expensive.
I own both Kronos and Fantom for your information Kronos as always had a ssd drive boots very slowly around two minutes Fantom very quick around 40 seconds Fantom all day
@@johndanby4320 Thanks, my old Kronos I seemed so mechanical and slow I assumed is was a disk drive, must be something in the data transfer that slows it down. You are right though, Kronos II is just as bad. Montage boots very quickly by comparison, probably closer to Fantom since both based in newer tech. I love the Fantom touch screen interface, just have no room for another workstation.
Great video, I was listening to the SN sounds, but I prefer the Super Articulation voices from all top of line Yamaha keyboards and CVP pianos, they didn’t sound perfect yet but I think they sound more realistic than the SN sounds.
Chucks right, it's your choice, but other parameters are how easy of a computer experience you want and also your budget. I know this for sure... Roland's are much easier beast to tackle.
Fantom has plenty of live performance tools.. but for the benefit of my viewers, 'menu diving' gives an awesome glimpse of some of this beast's capabilities.
Sorry, not impressed by adding some 2013 integra pcm sounds. For 4000$ price range how about giving users own sample capability and more then 256 user slots and audio recording and better sample rate? If roland copied Yamaha montage layout at least they could take the good parts from montage.

Love your reviews - you're so passionate and enthusiastic - thank you.
Finally found a video that shows what the mic input is really for. Thanks chuck
Thanks Chuck good review, always full of information. Thanks again
Great video... Any news about a next update in 2023 ? Thanks.
Thanks to this, I got the vocoder going!

Updated nicely.... Thanks Chuck..!

That's something you'll need to ask your Roland dealer (I'm not a Roland dealer)... if anyone would know, it would be them.
@@PianoManChuck Thanks Chuck. I'll talk to them.
The vocoder feature sounds suprisingly cheap. What are the regular vocal effects?

You currently own the CP88?
If you have a CP88, you are set on pianos. There are 8 in there with the current software CP OS v1.

catcha crab Thanks for all the info.
Still no way to set any compound timing signatures, all you get is 4/4 or 3/4...
Yeah. This is a Trancestation. Still no real sampling engine. They shouldn't have called it a Fantom. Sets wrong expectations.

can i activate the mic for my voice whithout effects? only a clean voice?
Yes just don't click vocorder

Should have gone through the JX & JUNO sounds etc now that it is compatible with all the other Latest Roland synths.

Too bad the vocal designer expansion is not compatible with the flagship
Very, very nice sounds, BUT all that menu diving is a no go for live performances. In a studio it's fine.

I think you'll change your mind once you see the Thomann demo of it.
