  • Decided to share with you my favorite method for gold recovery - Gold Reverse Electroplating. It is not the quickest method of gold recovery but is definitely one of the methods that covers all types of gold plated materials: from poor pins to thick gold plated objects.

    Great Job! Im in the middle of setting up my lab now. I have been gathering for 2 years! Just making sure i have the science down and get all the correct equipment so i don't lose any gold! Great presentation

    To the iron sulfate are you supposed to add a little HCl ?

    • @escrapchannel
      @escrapchannel  10 днів тому

      Hi, not really mandatory. There is a lot of HCl in the solution left from the aqua regia, in general. People add it to ‘make solution clean’ as in some cases iron sulphate has impurities.

    I have tried to warm the sulphuric acid as you suggest but have had no luck. Hot hot do you get the liquid to. I am wary to heat it too much because of the horror stories I have heard about boiling sulphuric acid.

    • @escrapchannel
      @escrapchannel  5 місяців тому

      Boiling point of the conc. sulfuric acid is above 330 degrees Celsius, so it needs quite a lot of heating to boil. Always stay on the safe side. If not comfortable to boil it, just wait gold dust to go to the bottom.

      @@escrapchannel totally! From the stories I have heard things get pretty crazy at 330 degrees without the correct tools and environment. Not a thing most people are prepared for. I didn't have a IR thermometer before but since I do now I took it to 120 and still not getting that result. What temperature did you have to get it to? Is it 250 as the text sort of suggests?

    • @escrapchannel

      @gregdickson5107 Hi, heating sulphuric acid is dangerous. To coagulate gold I heat it to boiling point, unfortunately I did not measure the actual temperature.

      @@escrapchannel Ok well I'm curious and I have the equipment to monitor it. I have no intention of taking it to 330C I will stay below 300C and see how that goes

      @@gregdickson5107 Hi, I was surprised to see how gold dust coagulated into big peace’s. Hope you get some effect. In general I know some people add sulphuric acid when precipitating gold from aqua Regia to get coagulated in big peace’s result instead of gold dust.

    Will there be problem if theres lead solder or iron/copper etc contaminating the gold plated objects. Can they all be present in Reverse electroplate cell without issue? Deciding if worth sorting materials or just run mixed

    • @escrapchannel
      @escrapchannel  9 місяців тому

      Hi, as the electrolyte is concentrated sulphuric acid it “favours” gold to be stripped while copper base or other metal stay mostly intact. Reaction depends a lot on the voltage, as higher current makes reaction faster but also impurities more. Gold product from the cell I refine chemically in all cases, so even if impurities present I clean gold during the refining.

      Reverse electroplating is a slow method but if time is not a limiting factor it is cheap and reliable.
