    Hi. This is something I was thinking as embossed sides for hoppers or gondolas. But more as a kit made out of customized embossed 3D print resin sides that would fit between car ribs. Problem is that there are probably to many kinds and brands of gondolas and hoppers to get thru the project. I like the way you finally did it. A LOT more easier than trying to bend panels using heat.

    I've just started to add artist's oils to my weathering materials, so this was a very timely video for me, Dan. I model circa 1962 when most freight cars weren't rolling rust buckets, but cars still got some grunge. My experiments seem to show that enamel washes and oils do a better job than acrylics for that job. Even a 77 year old can learn new techniques. Cheers from Wisconsin!

    HaHa! Just watched your video about this unusual gondola. Actually the car is more unique than you realize. This car was originally built by Bethlehem back in the 80s and in early 2000s I bought as many of them as I could find all over the US and Canada and Mexico. They're unique because of their all welded design. You notice most gondola cars were riveted at that time. A shipper that moved gypsum in a very moist condition needed gondolas that didn't leak. CSX was getting complaints about the white substance along the rail bed. It came to me and asked if we could help (Southern Rail Leasing SRLX). We increased the cubic capacity with those extensions and also had them recertified as 100 ton cars. And if you look close, unless they were removed, there are ball valves at either end for controled draining. Those Cars were leased to LaFarge gypsum and they requested that green color . There's a lot more I can tell you and share with you. I see you have great interest in detail. Maybe someone with knowledge of the actual equipment could help. BTW, I also leased the fleet of brand new Lapeyrouse grain cars back in the 70's.

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very realistic. How did you get the styrene to bulge?

    Very nice, though it might have been helpful to briefly describe how you fashioned the extensions. One caution, though ... note the side of the actual gondolas. You can discern the weld boundary where the floor meets the sides. Any distressing of the sides takes place above that weld line, so the 0.005 added sheets should not be distressed their entire length. And yes, I've found Panzermeister's techniques to also be highly instructional as well as yours.

    Nice job, Dan! Did you bulge the styrene the same way you bulged the sides in others videos or was there another technique involved?

    Really awesome work. Would this work in N scale? Please do a new video on the detailing of the underside. So sorry you lost the footage. I need four cars like these two. Thanks again.

      He discussed the underside in his Athearn Railgon video. Just copy a more detailed model -- you don't have to be super-accurate, because nobody can see the fine details underneath the car anyway.

      @@beeble2003 I will look into it. Thanks. For me doing the detail work is the fun part. Call me crazy be I'm doing it in N scale. LOL I just makes it fun for me watching someone else running trains I have built to look right. Thanks again.

    Did you ever try to warm up the 0.05 styrene and then "dent it" with a small volcanic rock - also warmed up and mounted to a wooden dowel as a handle?

    • @butcheyler57
      @butcheyler57 9 місяців тому

      You don't have to, it dents and bulges easily with that thickness

    Arkansas & Missouri has a number of very similar, if not identical cars numbered in the 600-700 series, I recently saw some headed through Springfield, MO. I'm planning to build a few in N scale, this video will definitely help the process.
