Operating Coal Loader - LIVE Coal Loads in HO Scale
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Here is a closer look at our operating HO scale flood loader on the layout. The original kit is from Walthers and the working components were built by my father. The coal is fed from a hopper located beneath the upper level shelf directly above (see details below). After loading the live coal loads and proceeding to Asheville Yard, trains receive helpers that assist the train to Ridgecrest, where they cut-off and return to Asheville. The pushers are actually needed, given the weight of a loaded coal train and the winding 2.6% grade to the upper level.
To come... the operating rotary dumper, which is strategically located right above the coal mine and existing coal hopper. Once complete, the rotary dumper will feed directly into the hopper, making for completely hands free coal operations on the layout.
The coal cars are a mix of BLMA and Atlas Norfolk Southern "Top Gons." The locomotives are ScaleTrains Tier 4 Gevos with ESU LokSound v4.
The clips in this video are just a small snippet of a larger "Layout Tour" video which will be coming from ScaleTrains! Stay tuned!
As alway, thanks for watching.
-Josh
This is by far one of the coolest things I've ever seen in model railroading.
Thanks Aidan
I wish I could figure out how to make something like that someday
My dad RIp would of loved this he loved model railroading.

Amazing work.
The camera angles-the model layout-the commentary! THIS IS AMAZING
Thank you!!
I'd imagine a "derailment" would lead to many hours of sweeping up tiny bits off the floor lol
pete foden it would be a coaltastrophe
Ever hear of a shopvac?
But I would also think it could add to the scenery.... left over coal from an incident
I had live coal loads on a old layout based on the NKP in 1955. We had a passenger engineer not pay attention, and side swiped the coal train at a switch. It took about 30 minutes with a shop vac to clean up the 15 car derailment. We left some coal, and I (in between sessions) added dirt impact sites from the hoppers. It made us all laugh, and delayed the travel of trains, for 3 fast clock hours. Realism at its finest. Although, something that severe would have delayed for 18+ hours, but thats by and by.
An investment in a mini vacuum cleaner would do the job :)
- So how did the fire start, Inspector?
- In the basement, he runs a live coal model railroad.
- Ah, That explains it.
HO scale coal mine fire, 73 figurines died.
Loading real coal? That's the WOW factor right there !
The detail on the engines, is phenomenal. .. as well as all your detailing on the board... very nice work!
I agree! I was a CSX engineer for 37 years and the detail on those engines is amazing, from the lit up number lights to the fuel gauge on the tanks, to the hand brakes, etc...Everything about it is spot on!
Scaletrains made these models if your wondering
Wow it’s been almost 4 years since I watched one of your videos. Last time I watched you were figuring out how to make the original coal hopper. It’s amazing how much you’ve done on this layout it looks astonishing!!
Excellent work again Josh! If nobody knew better it could pass for a coke train. Whatever works for you though.
THANK YOU...for sharing. Very nice, your dad is a real craftsman hobbyist. Nice work Mr Dad.
Thanks from both Josh and myself!
(Dad)
That is one phenomenal lay out, I can’t imagine all the work that was put in to this modal railroad together, but it was well worth the effort, keep up the hard work!
Just wow.... what can I say
You Can't even tell it's a scale model
Beautiful
This loading process is truly impressive and the video captures a realistic visual effect. Great job. Thanks for sharing. 🚂
Thanks Jim!
This was a UA-cam recommendation and I'm glad it was. How are the motors in the locomotives that slow and yet so smooth?
Gears and a really good motor!
I believe modern stuff has wheel and motor speed sensors so it can compensate. These models also have lots of gears which helps
Wow Nice Layout It Looks Like We Are Watching A Real One........👍👍👍
moin nizami I thought so too, very realistic looking not to mention I’ve never seen a coal loader before on any layout. Good job guys and I agree with the other gentleman I’d like to see more video of this layout and I love the Block signals
Looks good josh !
Excellent job guys! This is way above the trains I use to have!
Love the mechanical details!!
Sweet 👍👍🚂🚂
I love the working coal loader! How are the hoppers unloaded?
It’s just like the candy loader I saw at a train show a long time ago. Don’t remember if it was O scale or HO scale but it would load M&M’s and dump them into a tray. I never found the kit for it even though the guy said it was a kit
The slow running is a joy to behold.
Excellent video!! I just watched one of the early making of the coal loader videos the other day and was wondering how it was at this point. VERY cool to see. I am excited to see the rotary coal dump in action!! I grew up watching Model Railroader Video Layout Tour #4 (broadcast on public access TV and recorded to VHS in the late 80s. The last layout on the video was the Chesapeake & Allegheny of the Severna Park Model Railroad Club, featuring operating coal loader and also a rotary dumper. I only found a single UA-cam video of the railroad club, showing the coal loader is still there, but not sure on the rotary dumper. Shoot me a message and I can provide you a clip of the video if you'd like.
Cant find how to message you, but thanks! Shoot me an email at NSmodeler24@gmail.com and I'd love to see it! Thanks, Josh
@@nsmodeler24 I'm sorry for the huge delay in getting back to you. Email was just sent.
Hi Josh. How long does it take to load one of your coal trains ? Thanks Kiwi N Scale.
Wicked.
Now that is impressive. Nice work! 👍
Josh...you out did yourself....WOW......so cool....NS RULES......👍👍👍👍👍
I love your coal train videos. I know the answer is 'because it's expensive and hard to find' but what a run of real coal.
Super impressive!!!
Awesome stuff Josh.
This is flipping amazing. Would love to have a layout do this something like this, but my tiny brain cannot fathom how or where to start.
Ok. This is absolutely amazing. I always did love the NS, particularly in the early 2000s, with plenty of CR paint still around... must not succumb!! I wanna see those Y6s in the background run!
Wish I could retire. Because I would come over to your house and play. I wanna help load some coal. Man, this layout runs like clockwork. 🚂🚂🚂🚂
Awesome job Dad and son
That was freaking amazing! Now wondering how many cubic feet of coal you need for one train, and how many pounds it weighs.
i've now seen all 3 videos -SENSATIONAL, as a highlight for me the rotary dumper with the uncoupling method
assume that is all handmade, not a commercial product from Walthers etc
YOU MENTION "the clips in this video are just a small snippet of a larger "Layout Tour" video which will be coming from ScaleTrains!" could you provide the link for that video? thank you
I - got - carried - away
must lie down ...
(call me when the next vid is up and I'll get out of bed)
ThePaulv12 Were you confined to your fainting couch for a spell due to the “vapors”? Bless your heart. 😎
Looks great!! But from working around coal trains I can tell you there would be so much more coal on the ground and on the tracks for several hundred feet from the coal dust .. otherwise awesome
Awesome job very realistic, how do you unload the cars?
That is too cool. I wish it could've been long enough to show the unloading.
Wow I wish I could make a H O train set up like that good job guy's I'm Sub ing right now.
This is TOTALLY AWESOME MAN WOW , LOVE IT !!!
THANKS!!
Nice, can’t wait to see the train roar up the hill
Fantastic video, stunning modelling ! Keep up the great work ! 😊👌👍
I would like to know do you speed match engines for people and if so how much? one is a 70 a c e from MTH the other one is an operator scaletrains SD 40 - 2. I remember watching the videos of you guys making this is just the coolest thing I've ever seen👍👍
Truly awesome. Congratulations. Impeccable!
How wtf that’s so cool thx UA-cam for putting this on my recommendations
Awesome! 😎
What beautiful work, thank you.
Thanks Richard. Means a lot! -Josh
AWESOME!!!!!!
Hey thats pretty good!
Now how to unload it.....
^.^
Nice, now I would like to see how it is unloaded
I would like to see it unloaded too.
Just a few guesses here.
1) The hopper cars do not appear to have working chutes on the underside. That would be a fantastic enhancement, yet it seems that would be expensive and logistically difficult to make all that rolling stock compliant.
2) A tilt unloading operation would be more practical. In this, each car is decoupled fore and aft, gripped and tilted longitudinally 180°. The car is dumped out. This would mirror actual operations. It would require two decouplers, and a grip/tilt mechanism. It would be tricky, but less expensive than rolling stock mods.
3) They are dumped out manually. Getting either of the above to properly function may be beyond practical. The obvious occurs.
Confirmed in another thread. They unload by hand right now. Further, the description indicates a rotary dumper is planned.
That's really cool! Way better than a simulated empties in loads operation. Would love to see the unloading process as well.
Very well done video Josh! Looking forward to the next one.
Very well done! I'd like to see the "recycle" method you have for the coal though!!
Fantastic! Top Notch!
Every now and then I catch the Norfolk Southern coal train running through my town down to New Orleans. It's around 50 cars and thing of true beauty. Nice job of recreating it. Thanks for sharing!
Looking good! Great job!
Wow this is cool, I see those Trains runnin Coal everyday.
Super cool, but how do you get the coal out? Do you just pick up the car and pour it back in?
Where I live the mines load coal trains with two big “grave mound” humps not anywhere as nice or profiled as this is, often see some coal spilling off the sides and top heavy cars swaying back and forth
That is so cool! Never seen anything like it before on a layout. Great job!
Fantastic! Very realistic.Love this!!😁
I live in the UK, and when I went to a GWR Depot open day they had a layout there depicting Cornwall. As part of that, they had an aggregates loader! Now I'm going to use what I saw, and this video, to make my own!
Why is H0 movement always so jerky? Never a smooth, stable speed
Super unrealistic.....
.... Not a single car is covered in graffiti
RedWings-44 at 4:56 there is one car that has graffiti on it (the car about to hit the left track). But yes unrealistic in a sense.
@@tylerc7242 I see it now
Nice job! 👍🏻
unloaded how? Nice work
Amazing and very, very cool, great job.
That's a cool railroad you got there! I think it's awesome how you can fill them up with coal.
Hello, now that's something amazing. Nice job you two.
Thanks Norman. We appreciate it!
That CANNOT be HO scale, the attention to detail is insane!
Really well done Josh, great addition for operational interest. Look forward to seeing how you unload.
Thanks JC. Hoping the rotary dumper will be done this year or next! I will definitely share once finished!
Amazing, wish you could market that.
Now the UNLOADING process. 🤔🤔🤔 The details in this video was amazing!
Unfortunately i dont think HO scale or any scale has hopper unload hatches at the bottom. Real trains i believe have a hatch at the bottom that releases the coal into a ground chute, but i could be wrong.
rev9fan1 some real cars do unload from the bottom but these type are rotated one or two at a time while still coupled together and dumped into a pit. The knuckles are called rotary knuckles and there is one on one end of every rotary dump car. As long as you don’t have 2 coupled together you are good. Hence the rotary end is usually marked some way to make it clear. Also the train line air hoses don’t cross under the knuckle like almost other cars. That way they don’t dined when rotated.
I’m a conductor for NS at Lambert’s point where they actually unload the cars two or one at a time is pushed into the dumper still coupled and the whole car or cars is turned almost upside down into a pit with belts that go straight to the loaders and into the ships, it is a very interesting operation from humping the cars on the hill to free rolling them off the hill into the pit to where they get pushed up to the dumper
He’s going to make a video in December on the unloading process
@@AceDegree76685 thanx.
Great little video! What fantastic modelling skills you both have...I just hope my trains will run without derailing or stuttering let alone try to do something like this!!
Cheers from Melbourne, Australia...
Thanks Greg! If it makes you feel better, our trains still detail... quite often. haha Appreciate the kind words :)
This looks great 👍 I would love to put one of these on my layout that is whenever I get a layout
Have you ever had a derailment and “coal everywhere?”
Some would say this is real and not a small train but I just say look at the smoke stack at the beginning of the video. The bricks are shiny.
GREAT VIDEO! AND GREAT LAYOUT!
I would like to build something like this for my S gauge layout. I'm already working on a rotary dumper. Do you have any drawings for this? Thanks!!
We do not, but if you look back at the previous video of the loader, I believe we have some video of the inside mechanism. Thanks!
Doug Miller of Miller Engineering & Design here in Hendersonville has s scale rotary dumpers that built many years ago for his s scale layout. They are intricate in design and he has redesigned in the past. He is not into making and selling them like he did many years ago. I am s Scale also. He is scale rails and I am hi rail. We belong to the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club located in the Hendersonville southern depot. HO.
Where do you live?
@@rogerhaag9069 I am just outside of Toledo, Ohio. I'll have to check into that information
@@rogerhaag9069 Is there any way you could help me get in touch with Doug Miller? Just looking for ideas on the working mechanisms if he wouldn't mind. Thank you.
Why are road units doing what yard power would do? I actually work for the NS and I've never seen this lol
That is one of the coolest things I've seen.
Amazing. I have to remind myself that I am looking at a diorama!
Great job, and by the way the coarser coal looks good too. I remember when I was a kid the coal trains hauled coarser coal like that and that hasn’t been that long ago.
Stunning realistic model, might add in a fat guy on the cat walk outide the loading shack, Shutting down the whole operation for a smoke break,
Congratulations, this is one of my favorites channels
All that's heavy load and the loco seems strong. What's the weight of all that freight?
around 16 pounds.
I'm not even an adult yet but I have what would be short coal train in real life is a decent size train in HO (30-35 cars I think) mines just not NS mines BNSF.
A very cool video and I enjoyed it alot.
Nice video! The layouts looking
better every posting! Oh yeah, did
your wreck gang get those derailed lumber cars cleaned up
and sent to the car shop??😁😁😁
Appreciate it scott! Haha yes the cars made it out ok and are back on the rails :) Just not at the front of the train any more!
Do you have any information and video on how the coal loader was made? Thanks
Check out one of our previous videos on the coal loader. I have some shots of the inside mechanism. -Josh
I'm blown away. So glad this was on my recommended. I watched your video before this and was excited to hear you say in the next video you show how you get the coal in there. Awesome stuff!
That's pretty awesome. How much heavier does the train get? Have you tried pulling it by hand before and after to see the difference?
Great job! I love it!!
I think coarse coal looks better. But that’s imo.
Good to hear! Haha because that was our only option. Thanks for watching. - Josh
I had a blast watching this coal loader fill up those hoppers, great modeling
Awesome, I love your layout!
That's so awesome! Great asset to any coal train layout! Thanks for sharing!
Wow that was pretty neat, Now questions who layout your dad or yours? I have a railroad myself it's not set yet, real soon
My friend and thanks showing..
I have no idea why I’m here but it’s pretty cool. Amazing really. 10/10.
Wow!!!!This is some top notch stuff here. You guys have taken realism to a level that's completely off the chart. I keep looking for things that just don't look quite right, but there are none to be found. Thanks for the video, and I will look forward to more. Bravo Bravo Bravo!!!!!!!
That is a great layout you have there it was good to see it and that was stunning to see the coal going in keep up the good work. 👍 👍 🚂
Thanks Mick!
