    Hello there.
    Finally I put 6 Zill scions on my first tree to top work on 9th Dec 2017 and all the six scions took. They grow rapidly, right now the new shoots are at least 1 feet tall!! though they are still young and just started to turn green! I added other 9 scions of Tommy Atkins on the same tree on 6th January 2018. All the new 9 scions have started sprouting as well!!! What a wonderful results I couldn't imagine. Thank you very much for your videos as it illustrates the procedures very well. A very big thank you again from Tanzania East-Africa.

    Thank you madam, here in our part just bellow the equator, we are coming to our hottest month of the year. I have three 8 yrs trees which I cut the top canopy on August and I am planning to topwork with Alphonso, Tommy Atkins, Kent and Zill, with each tree to produce at least one variety. I am going to try your grafting techniques. I did the grafting several times before, on Mangoes and Avocados but never try topworking. This is my first time I am going to try.

      Great! Good Luck to You!
      I think topworking is easier than grafting potted plants because the plant doesn't need special care.
      For best results, try to graft onto shoots that are shaded from strong sun. If the graft gets too hot, it can die.

    I
    Watched a video on you tube. That was saying you leave the seed on the ground outside. And eventually it would pop open and sprout.. and you.could pot it up. Is this true,?

    Hi Chris my question is can I just use rubber bands for the elastic bands to wrap around the union I can’t find that material that you’re using I live on a US tropical island called Saipan, we have to just make up some of our own materials

    So can you just get a scion from say and apple tree and graft into a citrus?

  • @jayvee5748

    Why do you do veneer grafts here? I would have thought cleft grafts into those shoots would have made more sense (but you're the expert), so what am I missing?

    • @jayvee5748
      @jayvee5748 4 роки тому +1

      Sorry, I meant side cleft vs. regular cleft (removing the tops of the shoots)

    Can you graft Scion that’s just about the flower and then it will flower right away on the root stock?

    • @nroytv
      @nroytv 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, you can, if you want it to fail. The right scion is the one which is NOT gonna flower but produce new leaves. Of course, it should be from a fruiting tree if you want it to flower in a year or two.

    Sometimes you’ll see those pots with mango trees in them and they’re already have fruit hanging everywhere... is that because they grafted on scion that was just about the flower?

    How do these side cleft grafts hold up. Have you had any problems with branches breaking at the grafts?

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  7 років тому +1

      The grafts hold up very well, but it's best to limit the new growth until the union fully heals. I often will trim the leaves themselves so that there's less surface area for wind to blow against. Also, I tend to use the second and third growth flushes as graftwood for other trees or other parts of the same tree. Some varieties are so vigorous and heavy when topworked, that trimming them back is essential to insure that the young graft won't be blown off.

    Do u know what is the longevity of these scions once they are cut from the tree?
    Can i wait few days to graft the scions once they are cut or do i have to graft right away?

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  7 років тому +4

      It's best if you can graft right away, but I have stored scions in the vegetable drawer of a refrigerator for up to 2 weeks and still had some success.

    Hi Chris, did the potted plant fruit already? In other words, can one harvest scions from a grafted tree before it fruits?

    After grafting Scion how long before you start to get fruit?

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  6 років тому +4

      It depends on the size of the base tree. I grafted onto a very old tree and had fruit in less than 2 years.

    So how many days before you cut the leafs of scion to make it perfect for grafting ?

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  6 років тому +1

      The weather influences the timing a little, but the scions are usually good after one week and before two weeks after trimming the leaves off.
