Voodoo Child live at Woodstock Video is Mesmerizing , there is also a Johnny B. Goode live video from the Fillmore , or some other west Coast Venue.....It is Jimi playing like it's his last Dance and somebody is about to break his hands...He is BLOWING
Jimi enlisted in the Army on May 31, 1961 for three years. While it is unclear about just what his (MOS )military occupational specialty was, he ended up serving in Company A, 801st Maintenance Battalion, in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Airborne! All the way!
This young man from Seattle Washington changed Rock and Roll and guitar playing forever. The one...the only...Jimi Hendrix. The greatest guitar player in the world ever. He shook the world. No one ever heard anything like him when he hit the scene in 1967 with "The Jimi Hendrix Experience." One of a kind. Period.
Bold as Love, off the Axis: Bold as Love album is one of my all time favorite Hendrix songs (great lyrics sung with a lot of passion). The Wind Cries Mary is really beautiful (also great lyrics). Manic Depression and Little Wing are also great. Wish you could have been around to hear him in the early days; it was magical
Hi, Scribe! Really glad you liked Hey Joe, a great intro to Jimi! Yes, that was Mitch Mitchell, Hendrix's main drummer. Jimi said Mitch's drumming made him want to play! Two great early Hendrix songs, on the CD of his American "Are You Experienced?" album, which I think you'd like are "Stone Free" & "Manic Depression".
Noel Redding Mitch Mitchell were an awesome rhythm section. Jimi shines so bright its easy to overlook them. Jimis version of All Along the Watchtower is a must listen.
I wuz 8 years old in 1969 so Jimi was gone before I really knew any of his stuff. Since then I have listened to all of it many times and as awesome as it is there’s no new stuff, so the big radio tunes don’t hit me like they used to. That’s kinda cool in one way, if I wanna jam some Hendrix it’s often the lesser known stuff (if there is such a thing). Anyway, if I wuz to crank some right now, it would probably be a song called Angel. The story goes Jimi wrote it after having a dream his Mama came down from heaven. More great -and a little different, guitar playing from an amazing Artist that left us way too soon. Much respect fo what this dude managed to do in such a short time and sad that we missed out on what he had left to write and play for us.
I was 6 in 1967 and saw Hendrix play LIVE in the UK ! My Dad was given tickets to see The Monkees and he was the support. We had no idea what we were about to hear. To my young ears it sounded like a jet engine taking off indoors. It was the time of hysterical denim clad teenage girls and they were going crazy in front of us. After 20 minutes or so, the old man asked if I'd had enough and we left. I never got to see The Monkees.
gmgroucho77 - I imagine 6yo you was a little...out of place at a Hendrix show. Fun story to tell now though. I’ve heard some of the live shows were incredibly loud. I think in those days guitar amplifiers had pretty clean preamp stages and the way to get the fuzzy sound was to just crank em up, then you got the feedback and squeals. Jimi, instead of turning down to stop that, just incorporated all those noises into his sound. There ain’t no tellin what he would have done with all the different effects that came along after his time.
@@rustyaxelrod It's one of my earliest memories. My Dad remembered the story to me ears later. Apparently when we got there he asked the stewards why they all had cotton wool in their ears ....."You'll soon find out mate" came the response. He also said he bought me ice cream on the way back as he was so relieved it was over.
very interesting for a 57 yr old musician hearing your perspective on Jimi !! very cool young lady !! ... and super-cool that you picked up on the fantastic drum hero, Mitch Mitchell bringing out the best in Jimi !!
You won't find any of that on UA-cam, Hendrix ltd has taken all of Jimi's stuff off. Hey Joe wasn't written by him, it's a cover song, so that's why you can hear it on this vid.
@@memermetalthemiddleagedaut99 Well that's not actually Jimi Hendrix, it's Stevie Ray Vaughn doing his version of Little Wing. You can listen to it and tell it's not Jimi, plus it's an instrumental version, Jimi's Little Wing has lyrics on all his live recordings and also on the original studio cut.
There is a video of Jimi singing this live btw. He didn't write "Hey Joe." Jimi is my absolute favorite guitarist with Stevie Ray Vaughan next. I was lucky enough to see Jimi live in S.F. in 1968 when I was 14. He is an absolute legend. My favorite albums of his are Axis Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland. If YT won't let you put any up, please listen to them on your own time. You will be glad you did! Mitch Mitchell was the drummer and Noel Redding was bassist. Jimi was The Man! The emotion, the passion. The acknowledged leader of rock guitar in the late 1960s. Mitch Mitchell was jazzy, a perfect foil for Jimi. Check out voodoo child and also rock me baby from the live Monterey album. Jimi Played on the "chitlin circuit" with all the blues and R and B artists. When he got to England those British guys where in awe of him. They studied American blues and Jimi Played with those the guys they studied. Also, check out his version of the national anthem at Woodstock. Very controversial at the time. I can hear the great Curtiss Mayfield in some of jimis' guitar playing. Thanks
Not many people actually appreciate Mitchell.....its so easy to be hypnotized by Hendrix and miss out on what's going on behind him....he's an amazing drummer First heard ' hey Joe' on a House Of Guitars commercial as a kid....it kinda woke me up
You always have the perfect reactions to stuff we grew up on and have been imprinted in us for decades. Instantly grooving with Jimi's greatness, catching all the good parts, not missing a beat. "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" should blow your mind as well.
I had to watch this video a few times, mostly for the fun of it, but, hey, old guy here... I grew up with Jimi. The way you sat up to attention with the first few syllables of the song told me everything I knew what was to follow. There's a reason Jimi Hendrix is considered one of the most important musicians of the modern era. He basically defined Rock Music. He pretty much reminded everyone that the blues are we get our soul from in music. And he redefined everything. Redefined everything. And you embodied all of that in this video. Keep listening to the OG's. They will teach much. And whatever you do going forward, be like Jimi and keep the soul alive. Keep that soul flame burning. You can only benefit by it.

I love that the drummer was tied with another drummer for the job and got the job based on a coin toss. Hope the other drummer did well. This dude was perfect for The Experience
Glad you got to Jimi Hendrix. “Hey Joe” was the first release by Jimi at the very end of 1966. It was followed by “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary” Jimi only had three studio albums and one live record in his short career. He died in 1970. Other songs to look for are “Red House”, “If 6 Were 9”, “Voodoo Childe”, and “All Along the Watchtower.” Look for his live performances from The Monterey Pop Festival and his epic performance at Woodstock. His drummer was Mitch Mitchell and you are right to point him out as outstanding.

Here's a few suggestions: Machine Gun (from the Band of Gypsies concert) Voodoo Child Sta Spangled Banner, Purple Haze, and Villanova Junction Blues from the Woodstock concert There's A LOT more I cold recommend,,, he recorded a lot of music. You and other young people make me happy by rediscovering this music. Thank you and much respect!
Yeah, my reaction to the lyrics was the same way, "violent as hell." We can't pin it all on Hendrix, though, because he's just covering this song. It was written by Billy. Roberts in 1962 and first recorded by the Leaves in 1965, a minor hit for them. Hendrix's version dates to 1967 and is the best known version.
Jimi would legit put acid tabs in his headband so when he would sweet it would activate the acid while he played. BTW check out his song Little Wing! Or Wind Cries Mary
Went to a Jimmy Hendrix tribute concert at the Fox in St. Louis. I was 50 years young. All the others where sixty, seventy years old. Every one was high as a kite. Cops even came in and arrested the baby boomers. Fox it was great concert. 😊
Jimi Hendrix played across the US and didn't make it on a commercial level. Chas Chandler who was the bass player for the Animals heard him play and promised he'd introduce Jimi to Eric Clapton if he flew to England. Chas signed Jimi and flew him to the UK. Jimi met Clapton and Chas built the Experience around Jimi. Hey Joe was released in December 1966. Jimi was a no body. By the time of Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, Hendrix was a world wide sensation. You should look at Jimi playing Monterey in 1967. It was his home coming gig after he'd tried for years to make it. FYI Jimi has previously been a back up guitarist for Little Richard.
Great version. You should check out this group - the Stoogies. Early 50's group. Some people say that Jimmy actually took the chords for Hey Joe from their song, Hey Moe. I think its possible but doesn't minimize the greatness of Jimmy.
Young lady, you are the best, no one close, and your respect for tha man clearly shows it. Sweet Hippie chick, soul sista, Right Onnnnnnn ... Peace and Love
Other songs: - All along the watchtower - Purple Haze - Foxy Lady - Are you experienced - The Wind Cries Mary - Castles Made of Sand And much more. He is another rabbit hope, like zeppelin and floyd.
Jimi's excellent version of Hey Joe is the "go to" common one most of us are familiar with today. But before Jimi, Hey Joe was a garage rock standard played by every amateur suburban band out there. All of them played the song much faster and more aggressive. Jimi's cover at a slower pace was considered different and innovative when it first came out. For comparison sake, check out the earlier hit version by the Leaves or a five minute version by the Shadows of Knight. These versions are awesome too.
Girl I am 100% with you, that's why I have a bunch of pot stocks. I'm 57 and I got to grow up with all this, didn't make Woodstock though. Purple Haze, the song I mean, Then some Foxy Lady, and of course All Along The Watchtower, which should be the second song if you're going to do it right. And the ultimate come on song Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire! On the contemplative side of Jimi, there is The Wind Cries Mary and of course many, many more. Lucky You.
Glad you liked it. As for songs I'd go with Purple Haze, All Along the Watchtower, Bold as Love, Little Wing & Are You Experienced (in that order). BTW - I'd also check out a new band called Band Maid. Songs: Thrill, Play (live), Take Me Higher & Puzzle (in that order).
Little Wing, All Along the Watchtower, Purple Haze, Voodoo Child, Fire...just to start. Be aware his family has a rep for being harsh with copyright strikes.
Jimi - Highway Child, Dolly Dagger, Voodoo Chile, Are You Experienced?, Freedom, Red House, Bleedin' Heart, Stone Free, Wild Thing (live)...Just to suggest a few. Love your reactions, just came across you today.
Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), All Along the Watchtower, The Wind Cries Mary are three tunes that are a good start . Hey Joe, by the way, is a traditional Blues tune.
Drummer is the legendary Mitch Mitchell btw!
Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, and John Bonham changed Rock drumming forever. There are more, but those 3 are the ones who changed everything.

You and other young people make me happy by rediscovering this music. Thank you and much respect!
You have a Voice for Radio, or voice over work. Absolutely AWESOME!!!
"All Along the Watch Tower"
Jimi- Manic Depression, Dolly Dagger, Machine gun
Yeah, my reaction to the lyrics was the same way, "violent as hell." We can't pin it all on Hendrix, though, because he's just covering this song. It was written by Billy. Roberts in 1962 and first recorded by the Leaves in 1965, a minor hit for them. Hendrix's version dates to 1967 and is the best known version.
I give you total respect you actually listen to the song and you noticed how good mitch is on the drums
Jimi would legit put acid tabs in his headband so when he would sweet it would activate the acid while he played. BTW check out his song Little Wing!
Or Wind Cries Mary
That’s wild !
Girl, where have you been all my UA-cam watching life?? Jimi is GOAT.
I run into Jimmy's half brother at the am/pm near my house in Kent all the time. Very cool and gracious man.
Went to a Jimmy Hendrix tribute concert at the Fox in St. Louis. I was 50 years young. All the others where sixty, seventy years old. Every one was high as a kite. Cops even came in and arrested the baby boomers. Fox it was great concert. 😊
You need to check out the video of Jimi doing this song at the Monterey Pop Festival. Amazing!
FYI
Jimi has previously been a back up guitarist for Little Richard.
Great version. You should check out this group - the Stoogies. Early 50's group. Some people say that Jimmy actually took the chords for Hey Joe from their song, Hey Moe. I think its possible but doesn't minimize the greatness of Jimmy.
Are you ready to rock & roll? LOL! 🤣 ring her bell. Ya baby yeah!
See "castles made of sand " a pure masterpiece or a personal favorite " Little miss Lover"
Young lady, you are the best, no one close, and your respect for tha man clearly shows it. Sweet Hippie chick, soul sista, Right Onnnnnnn ... Peace and Love
Other songs:
- All along the watchtower
- Purple Haze
- Foxy Lady
- Are you experienced
- The Wind Cries Mary
- Castles Made of Sand
And much more.
React to Little Wing, Voodoo Child (slight return), and One Rainy Wish, Then for live performances you should do purple haze at Atlanta pop festival
It took this long for her to discover one of the greatest artists EVER, and a brother for the kicker🙁
this was his tame version - at Monterey he played lead with his teeth and later behind his head
Girl I am 100% with you, that's why I have a bunch of pot stocks. I'm 57 and I got to grow up with all this, didn't make Woodstock though. Purple Haze, the song I mean,
Then some Foxy Lady, and of course All Along The Watchtower, which should be the second song if you're going to do it right. And the ultimate come on song
Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire!
Aww man I was hoping that she found the live version, you gotta see Jimmy play live
Lynrd Skynyrd doing freebird live in Oakland 77 a true classic 💕🇨🇦
Saw him once live, It was electrifying
Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), All Along the Watchtower, The Wind Cries Mary are three tunes that are a good start .
Hey Joe, by the way, is a traditional Blues tune.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching get in to it. He is just to cool
Happy birthday Jimi Hendrix!
