Sounds Like A Drum I’ve got a piece of rubber that is about 8 inches of a Meinl busking kit. And it creates this awesome dampened sound that makes the snare so dry then when you whack the rubber on the snare you get a really deep punchy snare sound 70s disco sound. So versatile and cool
I put my wife's false teeth on the drum and it reminds me, when I'm playing, to turn the heating on at home. Great work guys, as usual. Very inventive.
Honestly, in the last few months of you posting videos you guys made me a better drummer. Sometimes because I finally understood what I did wrong all the time, sometimes by realizing I already did something right and feeling good about myself by you guys backing me up. Keep it up. I love the channel! The only teeny tiny critique I might have is: you always go for the best sounds in an instrument. But I’m looking for the worst, or maybe the most interesting, however you may want to put it ;) Those sounds everyone of us has heard (in bold, gritty, modern pop music) but is too quick to use a sample instead of creating it himself. I’m curious what you might have to say about that, beyond that episode above :) „Sounds like a weird drum“ I suppose...
The great thing with using jingles is the variety of sounds you can get from different metals. I scored a bunch of Grover Pro Beryllium Copper jingle on the cheap and put some in a jingle stick and some on a ring. Orchestral quality racket, let's go!
Thank you - great work! Like you said, everyone has chops and groove now, but making sounds is still a lost art. Thank you for all the info, can’t wait to work through all episodes.
When I was in college we had a band in the dorm ,but no drums. We used our metal wastebaskets upside down and put pocket change on one for the snare sound. The other was the tom tom.
Have you ever tried hitting the splash on the snare? I put a 10" close to center on the head and use just a little piece of gaff to keep it there. You can get a rimshot and hit the splash with the taper of the stick at the same time! Great trashy electronic snare sound. Love the channel Dude!
Yeah man! I catch it with cross-stick sometimes too. Another fav is putting a 12” splash on a 12” tom - rattles against the inner edge of the rim and sounds like an 808, even with a mallet :) -Cody
I have done some “prepared” snare drum pieces (i.e. cComposed Improvisation for Snare Drum by John Cage) that I put nuts and bolts on, the head, played with a cue ball rolling around the edge, etc. a bit wacky but it gave me ideas of just how varied the snare sound could be.
Still love your vids!! Maybe another request:. How to create a fat low-end snare (like the guys from VulfPeck for example). I Always struggle with creating this sound. Maybe not the correct heads, wires, ... You'll ace it immediately :P
Ive seen a dude put a couple of ping pong balls inside his aux snare. It was a clear vistalite and looked kinda cool with different colored balls in it. Dont know how it sounded, but most probably prett crazy lol
Does anyone have a cool way to recreare a clap sound? Ive tried splashes and cup chimes but the dont quite sound right and they bounce around on the snare. Its such a simple sound but its pretty tricky to recreate while using sticks.
I saw a YT video and the guy said you want that big 70s fat snare sound, use your wallet. I put my wallet on the top over the label and it works! I have done it a few times for different applications
If you don't want things to hop off your snare, check out my mate Jacob's DRUMGEES ! Thank me later ! (Nah really, why didn't anyone made this before him ???)
Can you talk about masshoff tuning at some point please? Sometimes called the wrinkle technique, there’s always debate on whether or not its damaging or if it will warp your snare etc, thanks.
What are your favorite effects to add to your snare drum?

Well, I like to make my own, from shells from snails or clams, small rocks with holes trough.also aluminium foil can be cool.
just an o ring 😀
Ive tried shakers, rivets, chains, hooves splashes, tambos everything hahaha
Splashes, Ching rings and tambourines. Also, a cowbell is fun too

YEAH!!! couple of my favs, VERY small splashes like 6'', and seed pod shakers LOVE those for organic earthy vibes!
Sounds like a tambourine. subscribed

Best channel about drums
"I like the sound of the nuts" lol
Thank you - great work! Like you said, everyone has chops and groove now, but making sounds is still a lost art. Thank you for all the info, can’t wait to work through all episodes.
small cymbal on the snare sounds awesome
Those drum patterns are wild
Nice, interesting episode! And it's great to see you playing, Cody! :)
Thanks for mentioning Gregg,
His stuff definitely rocks!
We’re big fans of the man and his work!
Very nice video! I like splash effect especially!
Nice to see and hear you play more, specially on a kit.
Hope to get the production support together to be able to do more full kit demonstrations in the future! -Ben
Great stuff 😆🥁🎶 Keep it up 🙏
Hey Ben what about piccolo snare drum tuning? Would a interesting video thou. Keep the good work
That's definitely something to cover in the future! Cheers -Ben
One song I play in my band, I put like a bead necklace on my snare and turn the snares off. Sounds really electronic.
"ching ring & ching ring like things" on the first Sounds Like A Drum t-shirt?
I'd buy it
I love this channel! Everything is so professional. It’s probably time to get rid of the iPod headphones though 😂🤟🏻
Really cool stuff!
CYMBAL
STACKS
...will be covered once we get into the topic of cymbals 😉 -Ben
Cannot wait! Make an hour-long special!
4:46 DEEZ NUTZZZ!!!
🤣
Ankle bells the Bouvet special 😜
another excellent video. how about doing one someday, on the different type of drum hoops, and what they do to the overall sound of a drum.
That’s in the plans! -Ben

great tips
Spare keys, hanging keys make a good jingle stick, or like a bell tree type thing.

Play that UFIP Class splash! They are the best in my opinion.
4:46
got em
His smile when he says 'these nuts'...
I sometimes place a splash on my snare, then hit the splash (with shoulder of stick). Just watch for it jumping off!
Still love your vids!!

Thanks! Ep. 6 should be what you’re looking for. Cheers! -Ben
10 inch thin splash on the snare. I hit the splash not the snare. Sounds killer. More like an alt snare sound from a module.

Best cymbals for live performance?

Love Ching rings

My car keys have worked fairly well for these effects in the past. Now, I mostly use a drumbal.
Which Evans head is that?
Looks like UV1.
Yep, that’s a UV1.

Yes, we will certainly cover this in the future. -Ben
Alex Van Halen does the same, detunes the 2 lugs closest to him (or so his tech says).
But I’m wearing ear protection!
