Things I've used to muffle my snare: Wallet, my phone with a case on, actually DID use a plastic cup once, tbh the plastic cup lowkey sounded like your wood block when I hit it, made for some good grooves. I also used a snare with a Remo muffler inside it, worked pretty good tbh.
i always mute my snare with my phone facing up so that 1) the possibility of me stabbing the screen gives me an adrenaline rush which fuels my chops and 2) i can scroll through my ex's onlyfans during the gig to fuel my chops
Snares on top is actually genius. Sounded good, and might help in recording. Usually you need eq treatment to boost the snaretop mics topend frequencies to get it to sound right, but that almost always makes the hihat sound to harsh becuase of the bleed and proximity to the snare. So actually just getting that snap and highs from the snare itself really solves that issue!
10:37 Am I the only who gets the impression that putting duct tap on the wires maybe very useful? A lot of drummers like to turn off the wires during a solo. But the way Zack played apparently used both sounds (with and without the wire) without actually turning on and off the snare wire. The rim shots give the impression that the wires are turned off (which I don't think it's normal), while regular strokes the opposite. And it sounds great!
Oh man, the jokes in this one are good. The Jazz student wallet joke had me laughing out loud, as well as the random frog butt. Really good video We really apreciate the effort that went into this one.
i love this. a couple of days ago I put some spoons of different sizes on my snare drum 'cause I needed a tamburello, and I don't have one, and the result was pretty sick. when my mom found out that i was using 8 spoons on my snare looked at me like I went crazy. also I used a cd to mute a lot the snare, the sound was kinda impressive
My favorite is a tambourine on the snare. Specifically a rhythm tambourine from LP. It adds a jingle to your snare hits and you can also just play it like the cowbell or the wood block.
10:09 Still sounds better than the snare on the school jazz kit. I swear at my school they just mounted some snare wires on an old floor tom and called it a day
The broken cymbal reminded me of one time I put a splash on my snare and got a pretty neat sound. Smacking that splash right there on the drum sounded very much like an industrial clap effect!
I have a concert coming up, and my band teacher only wants me to play a basic, quarter note, four on the floor beat the entire time. Do you think he'll kick me out of the band for switching to a heavy metal groove?
i'm so glad this video exists. i found a fish bowl in my band room last year and i put it on my crash once and never took it off. it sounded so dirty and i loved it to death
*Things I've used to mute my snare:* Wallet My foot Blanket Chunk of wood (skateboard)/Broken sh!t I think I might invest in some cowbell and nuts. Thanks for the video.
I use folded up paper napkins taped down. You can adjust the amount of napkins for the right amount of muffling, and you can play on the napkins themselves as a muffled option. Playing on the napkins will tear them up over time so you will need to reapply them at some point down the line. To describe the sound i'd say it sounds a lot cleaner (no pun intended) than having long rattling snares or resonance. As for the response, it feels very consistent, almost the same as playing an unmuted drum but maybe with a tighter head. When you play on the napkins it gets a very soft sound and the sticks don't bounce much.
I was playing a gig with my wallet on my snare, it got to my solo and I got way too excited and hit my wallet in a way that all the coins and cards jumped up and went all over the place. Was hilarious for all the musos and audience to see my bank cards fly across the room
Have you ever heard of Animals As Leaders? I feel like you'd really enjoy them, especially Matt Gartska's (however you spell his last name) drumming style. Your style, especially your use of ghost notes on the snare, as well your hi-hat wizardry are reminiscent of Matt's style, I would say. I personally know not a fuckin' thing of drums, I'm a guitar player. But you're fucking awesome man. Such emotion on your face, you feel every last little touch made. Awesome stuff, man. Speaking of snare wires on the batter head, Gerwin Eisenhauer plays his snare upside down and incorporates snare rubbing into his sound. Phenomenally mind blowing drum'n'bass drummer

Gonna show my age on this one, but anyone else remember Juan Carlito Mendoza's drum off solo where he did the disk scratches on the snare side, that was sick

Reminds me of something I believe Synyster Gates said about Avenged Sevenfold's "Exist" the ethereal solo somewhere in the middle, he said they found a reverse delay effect, and playing around with that they got that solo. Sometimes a new effect or new instrument can bring inspiration. 4:12 I was vibing with the groove, until I saw your face and busted up laughing. Subscriber: earned P.S. does your drum kit sound like a bunch of tin cans when you're playing it? Because my kit does unless I have headphones. Is this a "my drums are legit in bad shape" problem, or a "im playing in a garage with no soundproofing" kinda problem?
