Boredom is the inspiration for making great song. When everything out there look and sound boring you are like "I am bored. I guess I can write something to unbore myself."
The way my brain works seems to be *extremely* beneficial for songwriting, but detrimental to producing those songs to completion once the song is fully written. I highly recommend a book called The Molecule Of More for anyone who wants to understand why people are the way they are. Our brains actually process dopamine via a couple of different circuits, most importantly the control and desire circuits. This is why dopamine is such a misunderstood concept, and it’s not as simple as being good or bad. It’s also why ADHD meds help with focus and self control by boosting dopamine in your control circuit (in theory), while alcohol is horrible for your focus and self control by boosting dopamine in your desire circuit. That’s a bit of a simplistic explanation, as it’s not really possible to 100% target one circuit without any effect on the other, but the concept really made everything click for me. Probably the most life changing book I’ve ever read (this sentence is intended to spike dopamine in your desire circuit to go read the book btw).
I started ditching working on my computer in favor of a Multi track recorder, and replacing plugins with physical keyboards with a limited set of user presets, and from time to time I work on those presets to find sounds I like and know they're musical enough for my needs. And recently I began working on just having writing sessions with no distractions, just a notebook, my video camera, and my guitar or keyboard. I'm fed up with just creating loops that take me nowhere. Great video BTW. 😎👍🏻
I have reverted to only harmonica. I don't record it, I don't write anything down. I just play harmonica. Morning, night, [not afternoon that's melodica time]; early afternoon, mid-morning, half-past nightfall. Harmonica time, baby. My harmonica sessions have been the most creatively prolific time chunks in recent memory. My per second chunk level has exceeded expectations three nominal session lengths excluding rest periods.
Ain't done nothing, it's a superpower. Gotta eat a muffin, it's a superpower. Years doing nothing, it's a superpower. Socially awkward, it's a superpower! There's the answer to why you're not finishing your songs. Congrats it's for free. PS. it might be a funny hit by someone DS
Hey Adam, thank you so much for your content! As an audio engineering student, I find it really encouraging and inspiring. I’m grateful to have stumbled onto your channel!
When I’m dealing with that I’ll set timers for 10 minutes and only let myself spend that long on any idea. At the end of the day you have a few sketches, then go to bed and come back to them later with a fresh mindset and finish your favorite. Maybe that could help!
it's best not to force yourself to do something, rather reflect on the idea you get to exist today and make something, and the more it exists everyday in momentum whether it feels chaotic or organized (when they are both), if you let it exist, then you and the art become something. you're letting it exist
Hey there. Mental health is important. Mine deteriorated after 6 years of smoking constantly. 7 years later I can create a beat in an hour, it used to take me a month. The thing is, sites like tik tok and short reels are designed to give you brain rot. Take a break from social media. I did nothing but scroll on tik tok for a year. And I quit scrolling and started creating. It may not have been right away, (10 minutes a day). But that grew and grew and recently I just signed 20 songs to a popular progressive house record label. Set an intention to create. Set an intention to watch tutorials. Its about managing your time and your mental health!
I'll simplify for you, You can't creat at the same time as consuming, the brain is a one way system when it comes to creativity. You can not output something creative while you are taking in someone else's creation. There is ofcourse a difference between bad content vs good content, bad content has no purpose towards any creative goal vs content that is inspiring towards a creative goal.
Subbed 🤘🤘 Like putting an eq on a track without having anything recorded yet yayks. Just like doom-scrolling, people will try and find shortcuts while making music. Doesn't really work that way. Great video.
After watching this video and your "type of music producers" video (i don't remember if that's exactly what the title is). I have begun to look at the way that my entire life is structured, in a new light with relevance to my goal of being a self sufficient musician. You have a wonderful way of brining together somewhat abstract ideas/phenomena and putting them in structures relevant to one another. Seriously, these types of videos are so helpful and insightful, thank you.
There is a Chrome addon called Un-Trap for UA-cam. It takes away features from youtube to make it .... more boring ... very customisable. Anyway ... good video. Very true.
This describes exactly where I seem to be.. I only watch You tube but .... I feel like I need fast results from music making and by the time I'm getting somewhere I'm bored of my new attempt and so I give up and start again later. There again I'm re-learning everything and it's a struggle. It takes focus and time. I'm determined to create something decent this time .. We shall see .

Love that!!
thankfully I write music in my head, and then work on it months later.
😂
@@Jtskullz the mind is a powerful thing, many composers wrote in their head ;)

That’s awesome. I’ve definitely been using more analog tools lately with no screens too.

Wise words!
3:00 both techniques are also used to discourage street skateboarding.
I really worry about the younger generations with all this.

Good video, relevant to all types of people, not just music producers.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Most of the time it’s not for them. Easy. I’m not a mechanic. But I work on cars and hate it. Not for me.
Good stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it
Man I wish people would stop using the word "cooked", it just sounds so damn stupid.
Feel free to mentally substitute it with your preferred word! 😂
