Besides the great music in this video, the quality of the filming is really great. I especially liked the selfie scenes. Great light and bokeh. Awesome work Jamie. Thanks for the free evening entertainment.
That piece at the close… Wow. Beautiful. Emotional, subtle, meditative, contemplative, organic, beautifully flawed and fragile. Imprecise, but detailed. A real feast for the ear, the brain and the soul. Are you releasing these as standalone pieces?
I always liked the RMI since I heard Horace Silver's "United States of Mind" series of LPs with Andy Bey. It's a very unique sound. Not sure I'd ever use the piano over a Rhodes or anything but it's an interesting sound nonetheless and adding effects to any of those 70s keyboards such as a Pianet or Korg PE1000 always brings out so much!
Lovely, enjoyed it! Very lovable textures coming out of all the analog goodies (reminds me why I sold a lot of my digital toys --> )... The fucked-up communication between all the analog gear gives such a thick and 'living' sound, it's almost making music on its own :) More please, thank you!
Just wished I could give the video another like every time you rolled out a new piece of kit. I want them all. (Wasn’t the first time you’d popped up in my Recommends, but Subbed this time, obvs.) And, yes, Roedelius. Came to Roedelius, Harmonia etc only about a decade or so ago (actually via a much longer-standing interest in electronic, American Minimalism (Glass, Reich, …), experimental electro-acoustic (Alvin Lucier, …) and a, then, fledgling exploration of Krautrock)). Been a staple on my listening roster ever since.
It’s funny isn’t it. The simple machines often inspire the most. This RMI is quite chaotic pitch wise as it’s got that tuning per key. Something pretty wild about that idea
Many artists used the RMI… Frank Zappa utilized one in the 1960s with the Mothers Of Invention (played by Don Preston and/or Ian Underwood), Genesis utilized one during the mid-1970s (played by Tony Banks), and it sounds like one was used on “Lady Marmalade” by Patti LaBelle.
Rick Wakeman used one as well, featured in his solo spot on Yessongs. Edit: cool that somebody remembers Don Preston, probably one of my top 5 favorite keyboardists (amazingly underrated).
I love the sound of these early electronic pianos and favor Irmin Schmidt's approach. Both he and Roedelius, as far as I understand, disliked the early analog synths which are so sought after these days, because they felt it took too much time to get a basically good sound out of them. I just bought a Korg OpSix SE and I intend to synthesize tones like you'd find on an RMI or Farfisa Pro, with the use of the operator level sliders acting like organ drawbars. Feel like it's an underdeveloped approach in keyboard playing, kind of forgotten since the days of Can/Harmonia/Cluster etc
I’m now in v2 mode. Its in the main room with a revox just like Roedelius. Simple and so satisfying. Just using a 2 track recorder to make it all happen
Oh great. Remind me once again of how I had to reluctantly leave my RMI Electra Piano behind for a cross country move ten years ago. Just go ahead and rub the salt into that wound, hahaha -Thank god I kept my Hohner Pianet T anyway.
Amazing video. I love the mid-period cluster records like Zuckerzeit and Sowiesoso, and many of these sounds were familiar to me from listening to those. You were right I think about the Farfisa professional piano being a bit sweeter. I am a big Kraftwerk fan and I know Ralf used the professional piano quite a bit on their early stuff (tamzmusik comes to mind). I’m wondering what a bunch of synth dorks like you are doing in Nashville? I always thought it was a country music town. Are you sneaking synths onto all the country airwaves?
I can't pull the trigger on a professional piano as this RMI is so cool and it's massive. I think that's one of the wild things about the early keyboards like this. the Sheer heft! as for Nashville, Im not in the norm. Im just a weird hermit in my studio here but Nashville is getting hip I must say.. well it's all relative of course. Hipper maybe!
I have known about the RMI’s reputation for decades but only recently became aware it can do a lot more then create piano style sounds after seeing the Greenslade live video’s. How could an RMI almost sound like a (solo-)synth? I could clearly hear a wah being used but what about the sustain? Now I fully understand. It’s pleasant and full sound in organ mode basically turns it into a proto polysynth. Surely a better starting point then a constantly over-processed string ensemble. A bit of creative processing, as you so eloquently demonstrate, does the rest. Thanks for the insights.
Thanks for the vid! Also, I recall that in the past you had expressed your disappointment in the Expressive E Osmose sound engine, but I think you should give it another try with some dirt pedals. I think you'll find it to be much more delicious and inspiring.
I've played these a few times - passed on a couple for $100. Nord has the samples, but I can't find them on their website for some reason. I have them downloaded.
nice video, and making music with insane high priced gear is fun for sure, but whats the point? am i the only person who´s still waiting für the old jamie coming back rocking the shit out of it?
Besides the great music in this video, the quality of the filming is really great. I especially liked the selfie scenes. Great light and bokeh. Awesome work Jamie. Thanks for the free evening entertainment.
Thanks! I’ve been working on the setup. Glad it is looking alright 😅
Wow, just beautiful sounds and beautifully shot too! The outro song with Rob Burger is fantastic too!
Yeah Rob is the master. He got me into Roedelius in the first place. Legend!
i love you man. whatever you touch, you transform it into MUSIC 🎉
this is pure bliss! it's like your amazing podcast becoming 3D :) loved the camera work too!
oh man what a labour of love getting that mad keyboard tuned!
this whole setup sounds so sweet and warm and lovely.
Thanks for the brilliant work!
That piece at the close… Wow. Beautiful. Emotional, subtle, meditative, contemplative, organic, beautifully flawed and fragile. Imprecise, but detailed. A real feast for the ear, the brain and the soul.
Are you releasing these as standalone pieces?
Thanks for these kind words :) I’ve made a fair bit of music with Rob now. There are some real gems. I feel an album would be wise
Beautiful sound. Thanks for inviting us into your incredible studio.
Thanks for this! Never heard an RMI so well demonstrated.
It’s criminally underrated :)
I always liked the RMI since I heard Horace Silver's "United States of Mind" series of LPs with Andy Bey.

I really enjoy these videos. I make notes throughout each to apply to my own garage setup. Thanks.
One thing I didn’t mention is the thin piece of wood the coco is sat on. Ha. Really came in handy
what a beautiful video Jamie! so enjoyable to watch. would love an EP out of the German setup!
This is so enjoyable. Thanks for doing your videos.
Great video, Jamie. Nice crispy picture too.
Brilliant. Thank you.
What a incredible watch. Truly talented 🫡
17:32 😗👌 infinite vibes from this thing seemingly with some well chosen FX!! ambient album pls thx bai
Thanks for tuning in ! I just sent you the album :)
Love this dude. Amazing vibes
Thanks good sir. God knows how you guys make so many videos. I’m ruined after just one. lol
Just fabulous. All of it

Oh you know!
Really enjoyed this, especially the last jam!
Rob's the man!
Wow thanks great sounds and video. Just beautiful!
What a beautiful instrument.
There is something, dare I say this?... early "Casio-like" about it, in a good way. I love those simple raw waves through effects.
I had one for a while. Very interesting instrument! Great video.
Awesome video thanks Jamie. Reminds me of some of the work Czukay did for Sylvian. Someone else mentioned Jon Hassel too. 👍
The panoptigon makes it sound like boards of canada love it
I need to move from Cincinnati to Nashville where all the interesting music people are!
the way it's detuned reminds me a lot of an old Ace Tone Top 5 I had in the Studio... lovely…
It’s funny isn’t it. The simple machines often inspire the most. This RMI is quite chaotic pitch wise as it’s got that tuning per key. Something pretty wild about that idea
First time I saw and heard the RMI was with Charles Earland. He used one in his setup. Been a fan since
❤ ❤amazing instrument! 🎶 🎵
Lets get em!!!

Thanks for this. Yes the keyboard rigs were heavy back in the day in several ways

One day I dream to own an RMI harmonic keyboard as well as the RMI keyboard computer. But really the design of the harmonic one is incredible.
OK, I have had in the 80th a Roades and Wurli and Clavinet. I never hear of RMI. I took a look in eBay worldwide. NOTHING ...very rare but cool.
I bought one while on the road in 80s. Yuck....yuck....yuck
I need more!
I’m now in v2 mode. Its in the main room with a revox just like Roedelius. Simple and so satisfying. Just using a 2 track recorder to make it all happen

Pianet is a beauty!
sublime
Sounds like my first electric piano in the 70's, a Hohner K1. 😎
Ah. Exactly. There’s a few that had this humble sound
Roedelius is my hero. I hear Wenn der Südwind weht I feel at ease.
Absolutely. I’m obsessed!
Very very nice.❤
The RMI electra-piano was the sound of Sparks 1974-75. Just add a slapback echo.
RMIiiiiittteeeeee

Stephen Sondheim used the RMI for many of his 70's shows, as did Stephen Schwartz.

I think you’re right. I was almost certainly just trying to talk myself out of buying it ! lol
@ I do think it sounds a little lackluster on its own, but with a little dirt it starts to go places.
The RMI always reminds me of Fearless Vampire Killers but have no clue if it was actually used lol
I like Organ mode the best 5:57
11:06 Sounds like Jon Hassell.
I've played these a few times - passed on a couple for $100. Nord has the samples, but I can't find them on their website for some reason. I have them downloaded.
If you could add random pitch bend to each note it would help a lot to make it sound wonky like this. It’s so out of tune at times it’s funny
Y tambien sirve para hacer mysica..???
To be honest Sun Ra could make any keyboard/piano sound great.
damn right
Agreed. (Haven't even watched)
nice video, and making music with insane high priced gear is fun for sure, but whats the point? am i the only person who´s still waiting für the old jamie coming back rocking the shit out of it?
Great stuff! You probably know this amazing track by Hector Zazou - it makes good minimal use of the RMI : ua-cam.com/video/473Wig5Vz8A/v-deo.html
