  • If you’re looking for M1 Pro and M1 Max accessories for travel, then I’ve got a few that I’ve been testing and have used for quite some time in my workflow over the years. I tried to keep some of these options more geared for those that are on the move or on location and need to remain as lightweight as possible. The 14-inch M1 Mac MacBook Pro is a great machine and some of these accessories make it even better, and I have a new favorite piece of tech from Omnicharge, the Omni 20+. I'll continue to do more testing and reviews of the Omni 20+ but I will say that I'm really glad to have this in my bag as I've been increasingly on the move.

    thanks for this video! kind of answers some of my questions in the comparison video you had earlier in November. I see Sandisk came out with a new SSD v2 portable claiming 2000mb/s. is that the one you tested in that video and it gave you those sub 1000mb/s speeds? I would really appreciate your input. as now I may go with a DIY vs the sandisk!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому +3

      So the SanDisk 2,000MBs will fall back to 1,000MBs because it’s not fully supported in Thunderbolt 3/4…basically TB 3/4 for a USB-C SSD will automatically fall back to 1,000 MBs because of the protocol.
      So it was the 1,000MBs would be the way to go, and I do really like the Sabrent DIY enclosure quite a bit, which is also a 1,000MBs and plenty fast.

    Just received my 140w power supply for my M1 Max. It ships with a 96w. My thinking is that if a 60w will work but run warmer, the 140w will run cooler. Speaking of cooler, I actually use my MBP as a "laptop" computer. With prior MBPs, on a lap they can become so warm that you might smell chestnuts roasting on an open fire. With the M1 Max, I've been able to keep it on my lap for 5 to 8 hours without it even getting warm. My Samsung SSD gets noticeably warmer. Just wanted to pass along the info.

    Hey Kevin. Hope you’re doing well. I could use your help in finalising my purchase decision. I am really confused right now. So I work in a production and my workflow mainly involves 4K editing and maybe sometimes 6K or even 8k…but not very frequently. I also use it for scripting and some photoshop and illustrator.
    So I wanted to go for 14” M1 Pro with 32gigs of ram and 512 SSD initially but when I checked the 16” inch in store the screen blew away my mind. But if I go for those same specs in the 16 then the price gets bumped up to my extreme limits but in that same price I could get the 14 Max with 24core gpu. So I’m stuck in this loop. Will I really benefit with those additional 8 GPU cores? Or should I get the 14 and bump up the SSD to 1TB? I know it’s a lot to ask…I’m just looking for your friendly advice

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому +1

      Yep, that’s how they get you. Once you see that 16 inch screen the 14 just looks “small.”
      A couple of questions about what video editor do you use, do you need portability often, or just occasionally, and would you be using an external monitor with your setup?

    • @Hassaan17
      @Hassaan17 2 роки тому

      @@KevinRossRN yeah because before I saw the 16 in person I was more than sure and craved for the 14. I use davinci and fcp. I do need the portability mostly for my writing and photo work. I will be adding an external monitor for my home setup. Which is why I initially wanted to go for the 14. But then I heard that after a week the 16 bulk fades away and it’s just as portable. And also the thermals and low battery of M1 max in 14 only upped my confusion.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому +1

      Well, I’d say the “lower spec’d” 16 will be great then if you’re using FCPX or Resolve. I’m shocked how well Resolve works on these machines. So, I think you’ll be just fine.

    • @Hassaan17
      @Hassaan17 2 роки тому

      @@KevinRossRN yeah I also heard that about resolve. So by lower specd 16 you mean M1 Pro with 16 gigs of ram?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому +1

      As long as you have enough available space on the internal for your swap memory, then you’ll likely not notice a difference there because of the way the swap happens. I’ve even noticed this on the M1s I have.
      I wouldn’t blow out your budget and make yourself uncomfortable.
      If you were working in Premiere I’d say pivot to a PC or just expect some issues. I’ve talked to several of my creator friends over the last month that use Premiere and they are either switching NLEs or having to upgrade the machine due to it hanging up on them.
      I’d say if you could push it to the 24 Core GPU then that may give you a nice bump with only an extra 200 investment…if you can swing it. There aren’t a ton of benchmarks on that configuration, but it seems it gets close to 32 Core level benchmarks…in some cases.
      For me it’s always been about time. There’s no one that’ll value time more than you. So, always look at your cost as how much time saved. And, that even includes having longer battery life if you’re on the move. If it saves you from having to worry less about being near a plug, then that’s totally worth it.

    I hate that Sabrent NVMe enclosure. I have it but I also have their silver aluminum one also and it's SO much nicer - not just how it feels but I've had the side button on the one you show in your video get pressed on several occasions when in my bag and the drive not only has opened up in my laptop bag but the cheap little rubber nipple that holds it in popped out making the drive loose. Garbage. Spend the extra $ for a more premium enclosure.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 роки тому

      Appreciate you sharing your experience. Haven’t had that happen yet on my travels, but unfortunate to hear that’s been an issue for you.
      Did you get another 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure or do you have the Thunderbolt enclosure?

    • @FastRedPonyCar
      @FastRedPonyCar 2 роки тому

      @@KevinRossRN I still have the push button open sabrent enclosure but mainly just use it in IT support work when I run into a laptop with hardware failure and data recovery is needed. I can pop the drive out of the failed laptop and into that enclosure to retrieve client data but that's it's only use now.
      I use a Sandisk extreme 1TB thunderbolt drive at home that stays permanently plugged into my Caldigit TS3 Plus dock and for travel, I have the sabrent thunderbolt 3 aluminum enclosure and an older (but still pretty fast) Corsair Voyager GTX. It refuses to die and is all metal, it's fast and uses an actual SSD controller in it so it can be used by windows as a boot drive in a pinch, where as any other usb drive cannot.
      Anyways, right now, I'm using the 16" MBP with the 10 core M1 pro CPU but skimped out on the ram and only got 16G thinking it would be enough but it's not so I have another one with the 24 core Max CPU ordered. When it arrives, my wife (limping along with an old HP laptop with 3rd gen i5 CPU) will take this one I've got as she doesn't really need the extra horsepower or extra RAM that the Max version will have and she will probably "inherit" my sabrent drive and use it for TimeMachine.
      The plan is for her to use that, I will travel with the Sandisk extreme and probably get the ACASIS USB4.0 aluminum enclosure to keep on my desk at the house and put probably a 980 pro in it. It's expensive for an enclosure but still about 50 bucks cheaper than the other 40gbps enclosures.
      It's honestly not THAT high on my priority list because I did upgrade to the 1TB storage on this laptop and the Max one comes with it by default and I have a TrueNAS server at my house for data archiving.

      Nice! Always love hearing about other setups. It’ll be interesting to hear what you think when that new Max comes in. Seems the 24 Core might be a sweet spot for these machines.
      As far as the Acasis and 980PRO, it’s my new fav. Well, the 980PRO and Fledging enclosure as well, but to your point the is the fact that I can also use this on an iPad Pro or the PCs we use them on is also really convenient.
      I’ve enjoyed watching that brand grow since I started reviewing them last year. In my experience they’re offering a really great product.

      @@KevinRossRN Yeah I traded in my 2015 macbook pro for this thing and to say it's a monumental leap in performance would be an understatement. I still have my 5k 2017 imac but I'm trying to sell that (or just take it to apple for their $1k trade in) as this laptop is still just so much faster than the iMac.
      I got used to have 24 gigs of ram in the iMac though and never really had to worry about closing programs to free up RAM. It was enough but with 16G in this new MBP, it's all just getting eaten up by various programs I run for both work and personal in the day. I do work and personal stuff at the same time so I want to have all of the stuff on and jump between them and not have to close them out.
      With only 16G in the MBP, it's going into page filing and though it's not NEARLY as slow as when my 2015 MBP ran out of RAM (also 16G) Final cut will not render without freeing up some of that memory. It literally just sits at 0%.
      Charging $400 just to have 32G RAM feels like highway robbery though. It should have been the default for these machines IMO, not just if you got the Max chip. I didn't intend to get the Max but when I saw it was only going to be $200 more and would give 2X the memory bandwidth and much better GPU performance (I do some light gaming like Diablo 3 and Path of Exile) so having decent gaming performance is a nice side benefit.

      Yeah I’d agree with that RAM utilization when you’re trying to “separate” certain workflows. This is definitely noticeable with virtual machines, which I run on occasion as all of my windows laptops have crapped out, but may need/want to pivot over there without worrying about resources being limited in MacOS, although a rare use case, but something I need from time to time.
      Not to mention that I’m guilty of having 50+ tabs open on a browser, and multiple programs while I’m working on a project/video.
      I’m looking forward to seeing where the pricing lands on some of these new Intel and AMD machines that’ll launch this year.
      I’ll also be interested to see what this proposed “budget” XDR display is going to bring because honestly it’s just hard to beat those 5K iMacs when you look at just a display by itself…for the money that is.

      Claiming it's cringey and he's trying to be different is likely a reflection of yourself, attempting to attain an element of superiority out of the inner fragility of your ego. It's worth remembering that your collective experiences that have shaped your mind and personality are entirely different to everyone else's, so walking around (or surfing the web) expecting others to meet your definitions and desires is a futile endeavor that only projects your own insecurities when you speak, e.g. your above comment. It may genuinely be worth taking some time to self-analyze and question yourself before you dwindle into a tumbling point later in life with a lot of surrounding negativity - harder to dig out of.
      I had a coworker once who says the same beautiful human phrase now and then - does nothing but produce smiles. Personality, especially one with a lack of conformity in addition to good intention, is a wonderful thing. We only get a tiny slice of time - better to be yourself while you still can.
