this is not Ali at his best physically. his best years in the ring was 1966-1967. I admit at this stage in Ali career he's no match for Tyson . but 1966-1967 Ali would dance circles around Tyson

Sun Devil Network Goodmorning my friend. You have a valid point in regards to Doug Jones. Jones success at the heavyweight level was limited and he would not quite fight up to the level he did when he faced Ali. Ali was at the time was blessed with outstanding reflexes and timing as you correctly pointed out. He was for THAT time an anomaly one could say in the heavyweight division. Yes he was a fine champion but he still had flaws in his "style" that could be exploited and were explioted later on by Ken Norton in every encounter they had. Timing is the antedote to a speedy fighter and Kenny Norton timed Alis patterns well. This is the key to boxing and combat in general. You are NOT fighting the man. You are fighting his STYLE, his pattern of doing things offensively and defensively. When focused on the pattern and committing to exploiting the flaws in that pattern you WILL depending on the fighter have certain success. Which is why Norton did so well. Jimmy Young later on would give Ali major problems in a similar fashion. You are correct in regards to the heavyweight division and the lack of quick fisted mobile heavyweights in general not being in abundance. However there was several that did emerge during the eighties and nineties who were VERY athletic, mobile and even BIGGER than Muhammad. Greg Page, Tyrell Briggs, Tony Tucker, Buster Douglass, of course hall of Famer Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Larry Donald and quite a few others. Granted some of these men had up and down careers due to their lack of focus but the point is they were just as physically adept at the things Ali was doing earlier. Nowadays that is not the case certainly but prior to the current crop you see now other heavyweights had that ability. Perhaps this will change some time later down the road. Perhaps not. However I appreciate your post and you spoke well my friend. Cheers.
