  • The Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-27 mission had extensive tile damage after debris from the righthand Solid Rocket Booster struck the orbiter shortly after launch. This engineering video of landing shows in detail the tile damage visible on Atlantis. Recorded 1988. Video courtesy NASA/National Archives.

    Tile damage,yes. The landing was perfect at 185 kts! Rollout 7,123 feet complete with a braking and NWS steering test. To get the original timing the difference between main and nose gear touchdown was 7 seconds.

    Love the binary frame/time counters. (magnetic tape folks can tell me what those are officially called)

    I can hear the crew fuming in their silence! But at least Commander Gibson didn't have to tell Houston what he thought about their calculations. Not on open comms at least...

    Kudos to the cameraman at 1:00 hes just perfectly in front of the touchdown point
