Wonder if that 384 beam is still in use today or new units were fabricated. Also interesting that they stacked the left aft center with the first field joint mate before putting the right aft on the other hold down posts.

you can't tell me no one there that day wasn't a little on edge about the reentry. Everyone was aware that something happened during lift off and that possibly there was damage to the left wing of the aircraft. So for the flight director to say that that never crossed his mind until after the they started getting alerts back is a lie.

Nice clear video compared to other sites, but ruined because some vital narration is truncated, like the first mention of tire pressure issues, and many others.

What happened was Nasa not willing to think safety first. They had to many scrubs and were in a hurry to launch. They knew there were people saying they had problems with the 0-rings and the cold affected them, Same as Columbia they worried more about Nasa then the safety of the crew. They could have got satellite pics of Columbia, they knew the foam struck the wing. They also knew Apollo 1 had trouble before the fire and most were disappointed with the Apollo capsule. It took 3 dying to rebuild Apollo right. So that's 17 that died because of Nasa itself.

Many commenters have mentioned the "no go around option" as a hair raising, nail biting issue. While I don't want to minimize the absolutely awesome accomplishment of landing a shuttle safely, I do want to point out the sailplane pilots, skydivers and hang glider pilots face this exact situation on every single landing.

I find it very interesting that NASA was flying shuttle flights in spite of the public not paying attention because they're paying more attention to OJ Simpson and his infamous murder trial that was occurring during this time (not to mention Johnny Cochran's "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit." comments). This was also one of nine shuttle flights whose publicity was thrown under the bus by the "OJ Simpson Murder Trial."

One summer day in the mid/late 1990s, I was a teenager cutting the grass in the front yard of our home in the Melbourne, Florida area. I happened to look up, only to see a 747 in a banked left-hand turn to head North up the coast to KSC. Gave me a fantastic view of the piggyback shuttle. It was quite a sight. Seeing it in person was far more impressive than seeing it on TV or in pictures.

I also saw a 747/shuttle combo when I was in college in the late 1970s. It was the Enterprise, which was used for gliding tests and didn't have a functional heat shield so it never went into space. In any case, I was at Salt Lake City on the side of a moutain about 2 miles from the SLC airport awaiting the arrival, which had been announced by the local TV stations. I was elevated a few hundred feet above the airport, so I had a clear view of the 747/shuttle combo approach, touchdown, and rollout. It made the 2 mile long runway look rather short. There is the 747/Shuttle display at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, and it looks giant on the ground. But to see it in the air was just WOW!! It was a majestic sight I'll always remember.
