As said before the Ruts where a fantastic band (and still are in the form of Ruts DC). Thanks for giving them another shot and taking one step closer to Staring At The Rude Boys 😁

Thank you for doing this recommendation, it's always very much appreciated.
Great band 'The Ruts', they don't get the recognition which they deserve these days.
This song refers to an incident which happened in April 1979, there was a rally organised in Southall (a part of London that had a large African and Asian community) by 'The National Front' who were a Neo Nazi organisation, anyway protesters from the area went to try to halt the rally and trouble broke out and the Police turned up en force, what happened during this was the HQ for the band 'Misty-in-Roots' was broken into by the Police and the place was ransacked and all the band's equipment was destroyed, Clarence Baker the band's manager was assaulted by the Police beaten about the head and ended up in a coma, this happened on the same day as Blair Peach a New Zealand teacher and a member of 'The Anti Nazi League' was killed by blows to his head by the Police, no one has ever been charged for these offences and the latter was ruled as 'Death by Misadventure'. I hope that this helps explain things?

Mostly correct but Southall never had a large African community it was mostly Punjabi Indians - I remember the troubles around there at that time very well. Incidentally Southall had a great shoe shop called Lesters which was the go to place for Dr Marten boots by the local skins/punk/mods

Last night I saw Clarence Baker on a Channel 4 TV show here in the UK.
The programme was about the 1979 Southall protest, and Baker described what happened to him there. People were also interviewed about the Blair Peach incident.

There was serious 'civil unrest' in Britain during the late 70s early 80s. Protesters and Police were injured, some died, including Police. As a rookie Police Officer myself I remember those worrying times well. Don't recall the military being involved though. These troubles were often picked up and reflected in the music of the time, SKA, Two Tone and Punk. The music was great but the times were dangerous.

    I grabbed this fi Wiki...
In 1979 Clarence Baker, a member of the collective, was severely beaten and injured by the London Metropolitan Police's SPG unit during a protest in Southall against a National Front march.[7] The punk band The Ruts, who were partners of and had their debut single released by the People Unite co-operative, honoured him in their song "Jah War" which was released as a single and on their album The Crack the same year.

@@SPKdesign1 Its a relative, in most places its still a hard time to be in. Babylon still makes the rules, only now according to the standards of this time. Im living in The Netherlands and we have a major housing and building crisis due to an ruling of the highest court here in NL when a local Climate Activist Club sued the state for not being green enough and failing to reach the Climate agreement set by the EU. So since 2013 i believe, there are hardly any houses build, yet the country is bursting out of it seams with people and no houses to hold them. This is also why the refugee crisis is affecting the country so hard. There is just no place to house everyone yet the government is failing to fix this problem for more then a decade now... Maybe there is no physical force applied anymore, yet the mental force society has been put under has come to an extreme. Thats why we need these songs to keep reminding ourselfs Babylon is always around and we beat them by being humble and concious. Maybe i got in a little bit to deep here though😅😆

Banger. Similar vein to The Members 'Offshore Banking Business' as they were stable mates on Virgin. Unbelievably didn't chart in the UK. There was a lot of police intimidation of the black community during the late 70 culminating in the Broadwater Farm riots in 1985. I had a friend who joined the Metropolitan Police in the early 80's and he used to say an officer had to make a certain amount of arrests per month and he had his special people who he would drag in for no reason
