I remember this!.. In reference to an anti NF riot in London in the mid 70's Think it was Southall! Blair Peach from New Zealand was severely beaten during a baton charge by the riot police (The SPG) and later died!. I was only 14 at the time and learned from this incident from this record!.

Notice how slow and heavy Reggae Fi Peach song is including his voice? Hanier Family needs to react to Five Nights of Bleeding, gotta be the slowest and heaviest reggae poetry song ever recorded. Other ones that are also great from Linton Kwesi are, Street 66, Inglan is a Bitch, Down Di Road, which I also recommend for Hanier Family to hear.

Enjoy? Oh yes, more reggae? Lee Perry "Dreadlocks in Moonlight" (ua-cam.com/video/Js_zrr2D3kc/v-deo.html). An absolute classic from this legend.

He's always been political, album "Forces of Victory" in '79 was something else, his next album "Bass Culture" '80 which this is off was slightly less political, his first album, "Dread Beat an' Blood" was probably his most political of his early albums. This was during the time of Thatcherism in the U.K. it was a time of unrest and there was the 'Nation Front' who was growing they were a Neo Nazi type party, they didn't last long thank heavens, but was an ugly time in some ways but also hopeful too.

LKJ performs his stuff almost the same wether he has a band behind him or not. His Backing Band are Amazing. A lot of his stuff was very Political and he did a few along the same lines as thing, some based on real events, some more Generalised.
Sonny's Lettah is one that tells a very Sad Story and one of mi Faves.

This is a bit of a long one and it's copied directly fi Wikipedia but worth a read...
Clement Blair Peach (25 March 1946 - 24 April 1979) was a New Zealand teacher who was killed during an anti-racism demonstration in Southall, London, England. A campaigner and activist against the far right, in April 1979 Peach took part in an Anti-Nazi League demonstration in Southall against a National Front election meeting in the town hall and was hit on the head, probably by a member of the Special Patrol Group (SPG), a specialist unit within the Metropolitan Police Service. He died in hospital that night.
An investigation by Commander John Cass of the Metropolitan Police's Complaints Investigation Bureau concluded that Peach had been killed by one of six SPG officers, and others had preserved their silence to obstruct his investigation. The report was not released to the public, but was available to John Burton, the coroner who conducted the inquest; excerpts from a leaked copy were also published in The Leveller and The Sunday Times in early 1980. In May 1980 the jury in the inquest arrived at a verdict of death by misadventure, although press and some pressure groups-notably the National Council for Civil Liberties-expressed concern that no clear answers had been provided, and at the way Burton conducted the inquest.
Celia Stubbs, Peach's partner, campaigned for the Cass report to be released and for a full public inquiry. An inquiry was rejected, but in 1989 the Metropolitan Police paid £75,000 compensation to Peach's family. In 2009 Ian Tomlinson died after he was struck from behind by a member of the Territorial Support Group, the SPG's successor organisation; the parallels in the deaths proved to be the catalyst in the release of the Cass report to the public. The Metropolitan Police commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, released the report and supporting documentation. He also offered an official apology to Peach's family.
The policing of the demonstration in Southall damaged community relations in the area. Since Peach's death the Metropolitan Police have been involved in a series of incidents and poorly conducted investigations-the 1993 murder of Stephen Lawrence, the death of Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005, the botched 2006 Forest Gate raid and the death of Tomlinson-all of which tarnished the image of the service. Peach's death has been remembered in the music of The Pop Group, Ralph McTell and Linton Kwesi Johnson; the National Union of Teachers set up the Blair Peach Award for work for equality and diversity issues and a school in Southall is named after him.

I remember the name Blair Peach being mentioned in the late 70s, but was unaware at that time of the circumstances behind his killing.
As others have mentioned in the comments section, 'Sonny's Lettah' is a good choice for a reaction and covers similar ground to this song.

  • @Sandy-dd4le

Most of the story is in the song.
Blair Peach was a guy from New Zealand, he moved to England and became a teacher. He was active in politics, and was opposed to the National Front.
During an anti fascist rally he was murdered by members of The Special Patrol Group, a paramilitary arm of the Police. They were investigated but never tried, despite a wealth of evidence against them...the ones with beards shaved, the ones without grew them, their uniforms were dry cleaned before handing them over to be examined for blood etc, their lockers at their base were full of illegal weapons, metal knucle dusters, US style Police batons, metal coshes etc. They largely refused to give evidence or help in any enquiry. In one of the investigations, the members of the squad were listed, by the coroner, as being the most likely to have struck the fatal blow in order of probability. So it's known which officer it is, yet he has never been tried.
The Special Patrol Group was later disbanded, all of the members of the kill squad retired or left soon after the event....the modern equivalent of the SPG repeated history and killed another man, during another protest years later.
LKJ has done some amazing stuff over the years, some of it to music like this, some is just his poetry. A lot is about heavyweight subjects, fascism, poverty, the experience of being black in 70's Britain, and some of it is really sweet and abstract.

The horns are amazing indeed but i like the whole production a lot tbh. Most times i do no mind a good dub version but for some reason i do not really like the LKJ Dub albums. The first one is oke, but 2 and 3 are just to electronic sound for me and i miss that oldschool dub feeling.
