Ian Dury is a legend in the UK, he had Polio as a child which explains his posture. An incredible song writer.

Ace, the late Ian Dury would have loved your reaction - exactly what he was aiming for. This was the "anything goes" 1970's. Another must reaction is "Sex and Drugs and Rock& Roll", live of course. Please research his back story and interviews. This was not Mr. Dury off stage. He was a very intelligent, lovable person. Enjoy!

Norman Watt Roy is the king of bass. Ian was a successful visual artist, art teacher and writer he designed album covers for other bands and fronted Britain's premier jazz funk band. Not bad for a tiny geezer who could hardly walk. On cancel culture Ian was asked to record a song for the United Nations Year Of The Disabled. He thought it was patronising shit so he wrote a song about the unpleasant side of disability and screaming with anger called "Spasticus Autisticus" that the UN decided not to use.

His Keyboardist Chaz Jankel is a big reason for the musicality of this band.
He wrote Ai no Corrida - it was a big hit for Quincy Jones.

Ian Dury didn't mind being called a cripple and stuff like that. He actually wrote a song celebrating disability called Spasticus Autisticus, which did pretty well in the single charts, despite standard conservative outrage from people who hadn't listened to the song or read the lyrics. But yeah, childhood polio was why he so short and puny, despite having a big alpha type head and face. And yes, that guy really was playing two different saxophones at the same time. So this is also in the list of songs with amazing saxophone parts, which is a short and very prestigious list.

They had a few hits. I never did go too deep with them.
They were in the Concert for the People of Kampuchea show. This is the concert that had Paul McCartney in a super band with members of Led Zeppelin, the Who and Pink Floyd. They do a killer version of Little Richards' Lucille. The show also had the Who, Queen, the Clash, Paul's band Wings and others. It's a pity this show is not out in good quality. Dury and the Blockheads do Rhythm Stick!
Speaking of Paul McCartney, he does an Ian Dury song with the Blockheads called I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra, on an Ian Dury tribute album.

Ha, I enjoyed that! They used to say when they turned up for a gig it looked like they had come out of the local looney bin or maybe day release from prison. Nothing like them, the best group of the time. You know they did the demo for Relax for Frankie Goes To Hollywood?

Thanks for checking him out Ace, the saxophone guy was playing two at once!! You will get a lot of hits on this. Ian Dury was big in the punk and new wave era of the 1970s in Britain, vocalist, lyricist and all round legend and he survived Polio when he was young. Great beat, fun lyrics every instrument contributes and the vocals are fantastiche!!

Look him up - Ian Dury - Wikipedia.
Nr. 1 song in British charts January, 1979. Record had stuck at #2 spot for 5 weeks before getting to #1 where it stood for 1 week.
The Blockheads drummer, Charley Charles, died in 1990.
"..... In September 1990, following the death from cancer of drummer Charley Charles, they reunited for two benefit concerts in aid of Charles' family, held ..........." in London. (Wikipedia).
See also the television documentary featuring the band with live music and documentary interview with Ian Dury from 1999 (London Weekend Television programme) recorded around gig at Ronnie Scott's Club in London shortly before he died. Search - Ian Dury and the Blockheads 1999 Live at Ronnie Scott's FULL. I never saw them live but if you are interested the documentary is worth a watch (48 minutes or so). :0)

Mate. You are in the presence of the late, great Ian Dury, who wrote some of the best lyrics in the seventies (put into song by the equally great Chaz Jankel) despite being dealt the most awful life cards you can imagine. My bag is Jazz, but I always have space for Ian.

This song was great! It was covered in Swedish by M A Numinen from Finland which made it even more absurd! (If you understand Swedish, since he translated rythm stick to rytmen pinne which is not even a word)😂 - a great succes!

There is one song from the phenomenal lyricist (and vocalist), Ian Dury that will most likely get you blocked. The Blockheads are so talented and they joined in with total enthusiasm. I want it played at my funeral. It’s based on a London expression of exasperation.
That track is called “Fuckin’ Ada”

Hi Ace...I am happy to see that you are on some kind of mission to cover the classics of the past that I and people my age grew up on. They were wonderful days with very talented musicians and singers. I think a lot of the music overall was better in those days focusing on romantic love and free love as well as world events. These musical greats of our history should not be forgotten.
However, I think you may have overlooked our present day Diva Star in the making, Lucy Thomas. She has released "Unchained Melody"
ua-cam.com/video/mqkx7Av6yMg/v-deo.html and it is out of this world. It is worth it for you to see her now. She has released about 5 or six videos since you so wonderfully showcased her about a half a year ago. She also released 4 videos of her recent LIVE PERFORMANCE, the first of her public appearance on stage a couple of months ago and she was Fantastic. Please check her out Ace. Those old greats will not be too upset. They can wait for now. Thanks
