Late 90's, in junior high, I remember trading art with my other artist friend in the hall way between classes. Instead of passing notes we passed drawings. I still keep in touch with her via social media. That's one of my favorite memories.
Hi, Shana! That background was superb! It just made the motley collection of 'things' into a truly complete entity. It also reminded me of an ankle-length cheesecloth skirt I had in the early 70's and just about wore it out! I thought about it recently, and wondered what I did with it because I'm sure I wouldn't have thrown it out! My art teacher told me at the end of 3rd year HIgh Shool, when we were choosing out GCE (now GCSE) course options, not to bother with art, because it would bne a waste of time. At the end of term exams, I looked at the topics and saw one I loved! "The Land of the Unicorn.' Note: there is no mention that the unicorn had to be in the painting. I painted a fantasy forest landscape, with curly trees and all sorts of other such things, and all sorts of improbable colours, with the horn and forehead of the unicorn peeping out from behind a tree. Fast forward to her announcing the results. She read them out, from bottom up and the marks were really poor for almost everyone, even the 'best' artists, But she hadn't mentioned me. Had she decided it wasn't worth a mark at all? No. I came top, by about ten marks ahead of anyone else!!! Move forward a few months in time: I, and a friend, had a free perod and were sitting at the table outside the art room. We were supposed to be studying, bit I was finishng a drawing of a favourite pop star. The art teacher came out for some reason, and stopped to see what we were doing. She's already seen the drawing so I showed it to her. She said, "Why aren't you taking art GCE?" "Because you told me there was no point. You ddn't think I was worth it. She didn't answer, but walked away. But the best lesson for me was English and the school library. I read voraciously. I'd take the four books allowed from school, plus my quota from the town library each week, and by the third year, I was allowed to choose form the fifth and sixth form section, because I had read just about every fiction book in the junior section, ,and quite a few of the history books - and the same happened at the town library. I loved writing essays on anything and everything. I was no fan of grammar, mostly because I couldn't see why I needed it - I'd been reading before I went to school at age 4, and if we read eclectically, we absorb all that naturally. I only realised how important it was in French lessons!!!! As for art? Well, I never stopped. Being called useless by that teacher and my older brother was just a driver for me to prove them wrong. I went on 'doodling' and eventually did all the art work and advertising for my local church, huge collages (6 x 4 feet) for the children's outpatient clinic where I was the senior nurse, and a whole lot more, that I think I've already mentioned (children's clubs etc), and eventually began to take it seriously, set to work to learn more, and that led to my 'ladies group' and teaching!

I will never understand educators who use discouragement as a motivator. I don't understand how any art teacher could tell someone that an art path is pointless! We all make art in different ways. That is the beauty of it! I'm glad you stuck up for yourself and used her words against her. It's funny how she didn't remember that she said something like that to you, shows how easy it must have come to her to be discouraging to her students. I bet that fantasy forest with the unicorn horn was amazing! I also love reading and writing! Writing was always one of my favorite things to do growing up. I haven't done as much in recent years because I have been so focused on art. I should get back to that soon. I'm glad you have another creative outlet that feeds your soul! Success is the best revenge sometimes. I am glad you overcame the criticism from your teacher and brother and continued to do art in spite of their opinions. Everyone has some sort of opinion on what others should and shouldn't do, but you are the only one who can live your life. I'm glad you followed your passions and have lived a life full of creativity!

I mostly used what was available in the classroom or what was on the list for parents to buy. Maybe that’s why I’m always trying out new supplies as an adult!

Aren't teachers great? Well not, but I think many of us have memories of a special teacher like that. Mine was when I was around 8. My mother had died when I was 2 and I was kind of a kid who didn't have a lot of friends and I was just different. This teacher saw that I was missing out on things other kids had and during the school break, she picked me up from home with my best friend and she took us out on a day trip. We had breakfast at her house with her mother, she took us to a movie, and then we had lunch out in the city, before going to see a Lego exhibition. I remember she also bought me some nice hair ribbons. We finished the day by going to a pancake restaurant and having a lovely dinner. I have no doubt she felt sorry for me. She knew that I had some massive struggles and the other kids in school would tease me as a result. What this teacher did for me that day, was extremely special and it obviously means a lot to me still, decades later.
Wow! That is absolutely amazing! What a touching story. She sounds like an incredible human being. I am so happy that you got to have that experience. Every kid needs someone like that teacher in their life. ❤️

I wasn't sure how I wanted to approach it at first. I almost went with a plain, one color background, but I love me some rainbow, so I just had to go with it! I'm so glad I did! 😊
School for me was the 1970's to early 80's. I had some good teachers and some bad ones. I was always a loner at school. Had a few friends but never really mixed with many of the kids. Not that I didn't get along with them (most of them, at least), but I just couldn't relate to them. I was one of those gifted kids and very mature for my age. I enjoyed the company of adults more than I did with other kids my age or even older. I didn't mind art, but I was more interested in science...especially astronomy. Still am, actually. But, art has become more interesting to me the older I've become. I've also always had an interest in photography as well. Though, now I combine all my interests where I can. It's fun and I want to keep on doing that.

I enjoyed this video even though alcohol markers are not something I have ever thought about - just as well as I need several more lifetimes to get through the supplies I do have. I am pleased at least one of your teachers left such a wonderful mark upon your life. I’m 57, was a nervous wreck of a child, with a bad home life, and for me, it was my English teacher. If it wasn’t for him noticing me, I think I would still be sitting in that class feeling invisible. Teachers need to under the wonderful things their position in a child’s life can have, and sadly, the heart stopping moments of shame etc that some of the worst I remember left me with. Sounds like you and I had similar experiences and personalities as children. I'm so glad you also had a teacher who made you feel seen and appreciated. That is so important, especially for children who don't have a stable home life. I also loved English, especially once I got older and could take creative writing courses. I actually really love writing, but I don't do it as often as I used to.
@@CautionArtistatPlay I believe you could put that creative writing to good use in imagining a truly beautiful “how to” art book that doesn’t simply make the more awkward of us feel like idiots when we can’t do the “beginner” or “extremely simple” exercises. Surely, it can be possible to write more about the feelings, the escapism of art, and slowly lead readers to appreciate the words, and exercises, and have that feeling of “as long as I like the result, no one else matters”. Art books are all the same, except for medium, or choice of subject. Do you think Shana, that a book, written as though it were fictional, could instil into young and old alike that they are worthy of art and that help them to see the simple pleasure it could bring to their lives? Not everyone aspires to, nor are capable of making a living from art. But, we are all capable of enjoying playing with colour in as free a way as we did when drawing the classic house with the chimney, four windows and a door? I can still remember feeling very happy with my wax crayon effort, and so, I have a glowing ember of hope that the book I describe could in fact be written. Shana, I believe you could be someone who would have that ability. Think about it quietly to yourself, play around with some ideas and see how you feel about such a book? 👩🏻🎨🎨🖌️💜🥰📚

Wish I had an art teacher like yours. I still remember an assignment which I was so excited about. I was so freaking proud on my result and the teacher gave me 60 points out of a hundred. When I asked why he said: “You didn’t made that yourself. This is too good. It is something an adult would make.” I was so freaking pissed and I blurred out: “This drawing is better than your example and your an adult right?” He kicked me out of class and wasn’t welcome anymore.
@@CautionArtistatPlay yes, he really was. I never drew again until a few years ago. Now I’m annoyingly detailed in my drawing. That hasn’t got to be a bad thing but the perfectionism that comes with it has got something to do with what happened back then 😅

Mrs. Schilling-Nordel. She was my HS Art Teacher in the 90's [46, Gen X] and that Woman was the devil herself. She had no business being an Art Teacher and she certainly had her favorites. I wasn't one of them and so she made sure I didn't take any interest in Art until the last few years. Not gonna lie... listening to you at 7:52 made me tear up and I decided to share my experience. Mrs. Schilling-Nordel. She was my HS Art Teacher in the 90's [46, Gen X] and that Woman was the devil herself. She had no business being an Art Teacher and she certainly had her favorites. I wasn't one of them and so she made sure I didn't take any interest in Art until the last few years. Not gonna lie... listening to you at 7:52 made me tear up and I decided to share my experience. I'm sorry that you went through such a terrible time with that art teacher. Some people really should not teach. I always wonder why hateful people would bother getting into that profession to begin with. I am so glad that you overcame that and are now able to share your joy for art with your child. That's amazing!
