Robert Pattinson was able to hold his own against Willem Dafoe, one of the best in the industry. You can't match up with that level of talent unless you have some of your own.
It's always fun to see actors who start with relatively shit movies grow so much. I'd have never thought he'd be such a great actor, back when he became famous with Twilight.
Willem Dafoe reaffirming my theory that people with real talent have no bullshit about them. He's not evasive or moody or dark in interviews, there's no pretence. Open about the process, talks about it in ways that shows you he has put a tremendous amount of thought into it.
Dont see the correlation between being genuinely talented and being way high up your own ass about, hes humble but it doesnt mean that people who brag about themselves or think highly are not talented
I get what you're saying, but I don't think it's about talent. He's just great at what he does and obviously he put a lot of work into being this good.
The lobster was just an excuse. He had been waiting to say all of that ever since Tommy (not Winslow) killed the seagull. It is also curious to note that the curse was placed on the wrong name. Winslow was a false name, and Tommy thus tricked the old man into misplacing the curse. This adds to the notion that Pattinson's character is, in a sense, Prometheus.
There’s a mythological angle, but it’s also closely linked to the theme of male insecurity in this film. The lobster, and Wake’s emphasis on its acceptance, is kind of phallic in nature. As such, Winslow/Tommy’s degrading of it has almost a castrating effect on Wake. Any time a character is intimidated in this film, there is a need to try and assert their male dominance. Consider also the proximity of this speech to the almost make out scene of the film. Plus a Lighthouse is kind of just a massive dick

Dafoe should’ve won an award for his role in this film. Dafoe was possessed in the scene where he’s delivering the curse not even blinking not once!! quite academy worthy acting right there.
no way it means to me, horror isnt about being scary, the entire movie was unsettling to me and once you figure out the true story to the film, it actually is kinda scary to think about. It can still have humour, its my favourite HORROR film next to The Shining
dafoe talking so passionately about acting is so great to watch. Seeing him talk about his process of acting with that smile and lift in his voice, he’s properly beaming, watching someone talk about something they love so much is such a lovely thing to see
This movie took me by surprise. It felt like Robert and Willem made the whole thing in a weekend but at the same time feels like a full team production. Its genius 👏
This movie is so brilliant. I bought it and watched it 3 times and have no one IRL to discuss it with! I'm obsessed with it. Willem Dafoe deserves every award there is.
Get someone to watch it with for your fourth time! I've also seen it three times now, twice in the theater, all with different people. Lot of fun to talk about

The "Alright have it your way" is by far one of my favorite comedy moments on screen from 2019. Horror and comedy are a thin line and boy does this movie jig over it plenty 😂
I would love to see Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson work together again, their acting is mesmerizing. Credits to the director as well he is a beautiful creator. Looking forward to more of his movies!
I feel Willem Dafoe would be a perfect Joker I’ve been stressing this since Spider-Man And now that Robert Pattinson is named the new Batman this is the perfect chance for a new and different take on Joker with great chemistry and roles that can truely stretch acting talent
Willem is so articulate and clear about the way he sees and approaches acting. As an aspiring actor I just can't get enough of this. Fantastic film and performances. What a treat!
Can we talk about how according to UA-cam, The Lighthouse is considered a science fiction film? Because if any film could be the furthest from science fiction, it’s this one.
I don't know, I think the power of the light being transformative, the mermaids whether real or imagined, krakens, and the transformation of Proteus could fall under sci-fi since we don't categorize things under mythology.
Hunter Green I know that, I’ve seen it plenty of times. I was just correcting the other guy. I don’t think it’s a fantasy movie either. But to say that krakens and mermaids are sci-fi is just wrong.
Well, y'know, people who aren't huge on Speculative Fiction (Horror, Fantasy and Sci-Fi) tend to lump it all in the same bag. But yeah, it isn't Sci-Fi. It's really just horror with fantasy (maybe). Gothic horror, the Edgar Allan Poe kind.
Willem acknowledging the language and its elevation is one of several reasons why I love him. He's not just an actor, he's very aware and very intelligent. He's also very down to earth and appreciative of the people and the world around him. Robert's acknowledging of the perspective of him and Willem regarding the film is also very interesting. For me, it's obvious the film is a purgatory sort of landscape. The end of which collapses upon Robert with the seagulls and his carrion self. But it's not *inherent* to the film in that if you see otherwise you're not wrong at all.
Willem is simply a world class actor, we know that! Have to say that Pattinson is doin an amazing job turning his career around, soon to be in TENET, Batman, the devil all the time! Im not sayin he’s the new dicaprio, but it reminds me of early 2000 when Leo started to act in more heavy films like gangs, catch me, the aviator, departed etc
Lukas Skywalberg Pattison has had the best acting turn around I’ve ever witnessed. So many good and at least interesting films after twilight. Keep in mind, even when filming Twilight - he’d state his dislike for it in interviews.
This is with no doubt my favorite film. It is a piece of art. I love its dark atmosphere, the mythological background and the Lovecraftian ambience. A true masterpiece.
I'm hearing good rumors that the new Batman is gonna be mainly a detective story and not that action oriented so i think they are gonna use the talent he has very good.I would love a somewhat horror movie of Batman with a good mystery in it. Like the fist story's of the Bats and seeing Pattinson in this movie, it's solidified that idea that he can pull it off.
Masterpiece of a film. The cinematography and both performances were just mesmerizing. Williem dafoe is always a delight to watch, especially when he’s playing a mad man
My favorite thing from these promo interviews is listening to Willem talk film, and hearing how much he loves doing it. That’s why he raised the bar for this movie so much, because he cares about good storytelling. He was born for this role
"Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead, Winslow! Hark! Hark, Triton. Hark! Bellow, bid our father, the sea king, rise from the depths, full foul in his fury, black waves teeming with salt-foam, to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs till ye turn blue and bloated with bilge, and brine, and can scream no more. Only when, he, crowned in cockle shells, with slithering tentacled tail, and steaming beard, takes up his fell, be-finnèd arm, his coral-tined trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest, and plunges right through your gullet, bursting ye, a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now, a nothing for the Harpies, and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon, only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the dread emperor himself. Forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god, or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff, or part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul, is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea!"
I always admired Willem’s acting, but this movie really put him on a whole another level of greatness! And Robert wasn’t bad either! Great film, haunting, insane, it’s really an experience!
honestly one of the best movies ive ever seen. It really clicked with me because I've thought of wild and dark stories like this, and no other director has come close to capturing how I would do a movie in my head. But Robert Eggers has!
Honestly one of the best horror films I’ve seen in a really long time. If a movie like this can leave me thinking about it for days after I saw it, then it’s an amazing film. I wish there were more movies like this
Is it the photography, or the acting and script, or all of it? Because I'm attracted to the setting and the photography, but I'm wary of the story, having not seen it. Sounds like you'd recommend tho
Brilliant film, especially if you appreciate Jung teachings and the superego. Robert’s acting is truly wonderful, he’s developing marvellously. However it’s Willem’s performance that leaves me in awe, it is utterly captivating, bordering on genius. I’d be surprised if either actor failed to get an Oscar nomination for this work.
I have little familiarity with the teachings of Jung (Ego and Superego) and Freud (the power of the sexual urge on one´s mind) as my grandfather was a psychologist and we talked often and yes by the end i was mesmerized by the movie and how i believe (like you) touched on so many topics/layers of the mind, the conscious, subconscious and even the unconscious one ! Then, as i do with things that find amazing and inspiring, went on a interview binge and find out that Robbert Eggers wife is a psychologist herself and that he likes (Eggers) to see his movies with her wife colleagues as they can see a lot of stuff most people miss. So maybe we are on a path here mate, maybe all of this didn´t happen, and was all in a poor´s man agonizing mind..
The film only got nominated for Best Cinematography. The Academy Awards used to be a ceremony that used to honor the very best. Nowadays its political and if a film gets honored with many nominations that it deserves it's pretty much a miracle. While it would have been cool for Pattinson and Dafoe to be nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, as well as other major awards like Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, the fact this film only got one nomination at the Oscars, will probably reflect how this film will be remembered. I'm sure many films that will win major awards won't be remembered as well as others that didn't receive an award or even a nomination. Some that will be recognized will be looked at as just a favorite of the moment with little to no longevity, while others will be remembered for years to come. I believe The Lighthouse falls in the latter category.
The film that got me respecting Robert Pattinson as an actor. Dafoe has been among my favourites since Platoon and he has got better with every film since.
willem has such an energy about him, so loving and playful and in awe of his craft. it's so clear to see, when he acts and when he does stuff like this, he's really *in* it for the love of it and so wise about it
Willem Dafoe in my eyes could quite possible be the best actor of all time, couldn't see De Niro, Pacino pulling that role off in a million years really good film.👍
This past year has genuinely been one of my favorites when it comes to movies. We have this masterpiece, Midsommar, Uncut Gems, Parasite, OUATIH, Booksmart, and many more I’m forgetting right now and even more that I haven’t had the privilege of seeing yet.
I just discovered this movie, and it was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve already watched it three times, I hope people finally start to realize what a great actor Robert is!

Good for Robert for doing a great job in getting away from that "Twilight" stigma. A lot of actors play a part, in a movie and its sequels, and can never really shake off always being seen as that character.

Dafoe should’ve won an award for his role in this film. Dafoe was possessed in the scene where he’s delivering the curse not even blinking not once!! quite academy worthy acting right there.
This is an actual *HORROR* film.
It's both a psychological horror and a dark comedy!
no way its horror, doesnt need jumpscares and ghosts for that
no way it means to me, horror isnt about being scary, the entire movie was unsettling to me and once you figure out the true story to the film, it actually is kinda scary to think about. It can still have humour, its my favourite HORROR film next to The Shining
No it isn't. It's a great film that transcends genres by fusing a plethora of them together to create something dense, ambiguous, and meticulous.
It's not that scary but the film is a master peice imo
dafoe talking so passionately about acting is so great to watch. Seeing him talk about his process of acting with that smile and lift in his voice, he’s properly beaming, watching someone talk about something they love so much is such a lovely thing to see
Willem Dafoe was snubbed for Best Supporting Actor. Shame on you, The Academy!
The academy has snubbed this man for the past 30 years.. he doesn’t need one at this point
@james cowboy well his performance doesn't get publicly acknowledged either
Supporting? Nah, best lead actor
He deserves an Oscar for the curse monologue alone
not even nominated. oscars are a joke.
Lot of fun to talk about
Yess, I lack of friends with good taste in cinema 🙄😔
Im in the same boat honestly
Same lol no one appreciates my horror tastes.
SAME
Willem Dafoe also Robert Pattinson Deserve an Oscar! "WOW" what a Movie.
Alright...
Have it your way..
I like your cooking.
I say this whenever I have argument with me wife
@@patrick_btmn WITH *YE*

the theater and myself actually had an audible chuckle during that xD it was so interesting going from a terrifying monologue to a genuinely funny moment
Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead Winslow! HAAARK!
Dafoe is such a lovely person, you can tell he loves the acting
Man this movie messed my head for 3 days. I had to watch frozen after watching this movie to balance my mood
lmaoooo i stayed up all night after watching it and had to watch the little mermaid pt 1 and 2 afterwards
It wasn’t that dark
@@adahbombdon1512 the ending was.
Reading this reminded me of Frozen from 2010. Another amazing underrated movie
i really want to watch it but im scared i wont be able to sleep if i do- i don't deal with horror very well- is it about paranormal stuff? or is it more like one flew over the cuckoos nest?
This is LITERALLY 10 minutes of both actors spilling their beans
Bonus footage looks wrong in color
I want to see that cistern shot in color! It must exist!
b-b it probably doesn’t exist in color bra cause the movie was shot on black and white film. They have no color prints
@@theglitch1815 yeah I understand, but you know how sometimes there are photographers on set, taking still shots, that's what I was thinking.
Yep some of the of the best film dynamic I've seen all 2019.
The Mad Titan You have great taste!
Em Cruz-That would be great, can you imagine if Dafoe wound up playing the Joker to Robert Pattinson's Batman, that would be amazing.
I feel Willem Dafoe would be a perfect Joker
I’ve been stressing this since Spider-Man
And now that Robert Pattinson is named the new Batman this is the perfect chance for a new and different take on Joker with great chemistry and roles that can truely stretch acting talent
I love Dafoe’s accent in this film
Willem is so articulate and clear about the way he sees and approaches acting. As an aspiring actor I just can't get enough of this. Fantastic film and performances. What a treat!
"as an aspiring actor"
Oh brother 🙄
@@SexyTookie Tough path, I know
@@PaoloReaper I know you'll make it friend. Can't wait to endlessly speculate which badass I see on screen and stage is you.
@@Mikidy Thank you so much for your words, friend! You are a great person and I love you for it
Yes, I agree. Robert Pattinson is someone I am keeping my eye on. He and Willem Dafoe are absolutely deranged---just awesome performances
Can we talk about how according to UA-cam, The Lighthouse is considered a science fiction film? Because if any film could be the furthest from science fiction, it’s this one.
I don't know, I think the power of the light being transformative, the mermaids whether real or imagined, krakens, and the transformation of Proteus could fall under sci-fi since we don't categorize things under mythology.
justdrop Mermaids, Krakens, and all that would fall under fantasy.
Papa Slider those clearly were visions or dreams, which isn’t sci-fi. This was a movie about going mad, not about mermaids.
Keep in mind, even when filming Twilight - he’d state his dislike for it in interviews.
watch Good Time, he’s great in it
I knew that was him in the Tenet trailer!
@@lothbrok2770 how? Lol
The Rover with him and Guy Pierce is very underrated too
This is with no doubt my favorite film. It is a piece of art. I love its dark atmosphere, the mythological background and the Lovecraftian ambience. A true masterpiece.
My prediction: Pattinson is gonna do with Batman what Ledger did with Joker.
High hopes, says I
I'm hearing good rumors that the new Batman is gonna be mainly a detective story and not that action oriented so i think they are gonna use the talent he has very good.I would love a somewhat horror movie of Batman with a good mystery in it. Like the fist story's of the Bats and seeing Pattinson in this movie, it's solidified that idea that he can pull it off.
Knock on wood!! Do it now lol! But yes I feel the same way, ledger was hated on so badly prior to release
Hope it doesn't kill him, tho.
YEAS
Robert Pattinson is still gorgeous as ever!
5:30 I love the lighting in this shot.
Masterpiece of a film. The cinematography and both performances were just mesmerizing. Williem dafoe is always a delight to watch, especially when he’s playing a mad man
Seeing Robert without a 'stache feels ... disproportionate.
He doesn't sparkle, either.
Kind of like seeing Timothy Olyphant after Deadwood minus the mustache. Or Burt Reynolds. Just doesn't look quite right.
With a mustache he reminds me of Casey Frey. Lol.
@@TheProphegy you gon make me act up aha
disproportionate? is that even the right word? the proportions are off? him with a mustache is a proportion?
Really underrated movie , unbelievable acting , some of the best ever
My favorite thing from these promo interviews is listening to Willem talk film, and hearing how much he loves doing it. That’s why he raised the bar for this movie so much, because he cares about good storytelling. He was born for this role
Remember watching this the same week as Parasite. Was the best week for movies ever for me. Just back to back bangers
Willem Dafoe clearly loves this movie, and gives some great advice on acting here.
Love ya work.
...Sir, this is a Wendy’s.
“ okay have it your way .... I like your lobster” lmaooo
I loved this film and I think Willem Dafoe is one of the greats. I love to hear him talk about acting. Such a thoughtful man and a great communicator.
Willem's face and voice have so much expression - it blows me away.
To further deligitimize the integrity of the Oscars, it's criminal that Willem Dafoe's performance wasn't even recognized/nominated.
My boy Robert Pat dropping a gem @ 8:40 how he finds his character when reading a script
Best film of 2019, hands down
Love Bats in the Belfry 2020 ?
"Portrait of a Young Lady on Fire" is on par, but apart from that you are right. Having said that, 2019 brought us a lot of movie gems!
Robert and Willem both deserved Oscar noms for this film and I will die on this hill.
Willem Dafoe is a Master at what he does!! And he never disappoints!!
I imagine 'cod it's freakishly weird.........and I DO mean weird.
Dafoe deserved an Oscar for this.. He NAILED it !
This movie was art
I always admired Willem’s acting, but this movie really put him on a whole another level of greatness! And Robert wasn’t bad either! Great film, haunting, insane, it’s really an experience!
honestly one of the best movies ive ever seen. It really clicked with me because I've thought of wild and dark stories like this, and no other director has come close to capturing how I would do a movie in my head. But Robert Eggers has!
Honestly one of the best horror films I’ve seen in a really long time. If a movie like this can leave me thinking about it for days after I saw it, then it’s an amazing film. I wish there were more movies like this
This movie is so good it makes me want to cry how good it is , I feel bad for the people who couldnt fully enjoy it
Lol
Is it the photography, or the acting and script, or all of it? Because I'm attracted to the setting and the photography, but I'm wary of the story, having not seen it. Sounds like you'd recommend tho
@@GlennDavey the story is good. It has connections to one another
Anyone that's ever worked in an isolated situation with a horrible boss, this movie just hits home in a way that few other movies EVER will
Just finished watching this movie.... just AMAZING! Quintessentially brilliant!
Still in awe of their performance! Incredible! Robert was like a young Daniel day Lewis
They weren't even nominated... just sad.
Boy you’re gonna be surprised..
A lot of jungian symbolism there! A truly archetypal story! :)
The film that got me respecting Robert Pattinson as an actor. Dafoe has been among my favourites since Platoon and he has got better with every film since.
Between Aster and Eggers, we’re in for a long time of incredible pieces of fucked up art. Can’t wait to see more!
They're both literally the deep web of hollywood
yoo true
Aster won't be doing horror for a while tho 💔
Aster is good. Eggers is on a whole other level.
Think this bliws midsommar out of the water
We all love to see Rober Pattinson become his best self ! Amazing doggo
Easily one of the best films ever made. True art. Willem Dafoe is a national treasure.
willem has such an energy about him, so loving and playful and in awe of his craft. it's so clear to see, when he acts and when he does stuff like this, he's really *in* it for the love of it and so wise about it
love this film and the witch. eggers is a legend in the making. Dafoe and pattinson are great actors.
What a masterpiece of a film!
Such a bonkers film that i need a second viewing to take it all in tbh.what i do know is the leads are sensational.pattinson especially is superb.
Willem Dafoe in my eyes could quite possible be the best actor of all time, couldn't see De Niro, Pacino pulling that role off in a million years really good film.👍
I can see de Niro pulling this off
This past year has genuinely been one of my favorites when it comes to movies.
Seriously Oscars?! Are you out of your mind?? Don't pass this movie up because it's the best of all the films of this year. THIS is acting at it's finest. Brilliant film. Wake the hell up Oscars. This wins best actor, best supporting actor, best script, best director and best picture. This is the movie of the year...and YES, damnit...I LOVE Willem Defoe's lobster.
I'm genually happy for Pattinson, he's getting so much more recognition for hes work.. and honestly he deserve it now
One of the best movies ever. Man... what about Willem Dafoe performance ? Not Just the best of 2019, but probably a TOP 5 performance of all time. He is the master of acting.
abrokenframe1 of the decade maybe not of all time.
God I love Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson they have both surprised me with performing a movie like this and more fantastically doing it together and killing it. The Lighthouse easily in my top movies
The more I hear about this movie, the more I adore Willem Dafoe.
Saw this movie a year ago! Just magnificent!
I live for these Film4 Interview Specials. They're the best.
This is one of my favourite films!!
Good for Robert for doing a great job in getting away from that "Twilight" stigma. A lot of actors play a part, in a movie and its sequels, and can never really shake off always being seen as that character.
I nominate it be called "Star wars" syndrome
Dafoe, what an actor
