Odd that equipping the heavy weapon will slow you down but putting it back in your inventory (along with the rest of your arsenal) and pulling out a little pistol will speed you up.
“I am Heavy Weapons Guy and this is my weapon. She weighs 150 kilograms and fires $200 custom tooled cartridges. It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon for 12 seconds”-Heavy
Ok first off I fully admit that running around with a minigun over any distance is absolutely absurd and unrealistic, however you absolutely CAN wield one off of a mount, I am uniquely qualified to claim this as I have actually had this opportunity in the real world with the very model of minigun listed in this video. I only got to fire 1,000 rounds with it due to cost of it, but I did it with "some" accuracy. (The target was an old car from about 60 meters if I recall) and I'd say about half of the rounds hit the mark. I was stationary while firing, but I was carrying it. You need to be a strong/big guy (Much like the heroic characters in video games.) to carry one, and not need to walk around carrying it, but it can be done. Oh, and yes it gives you the feeling of being unstoppable like nothing else.
I sincerely doubt it, since it's at least 2000RPM of 7.62x51mm you're talking about. I remember well the footage of the making of of one of the Resident Evil movies (which are shit) that the actor playing Nemesis, a very tall, very bulky guy at that, was launched back from his 15Kg arm attached rotary machinegun firing blanks. But then again, the M134 is a 40kg piece of equipment, and I don't doubt you can lift it at all. That must mitigate a lot of the recoil. Anyways, if you're telling the truth, boy that must have been AWESOME.
I wish I still had the video my father took of me using it, sadly it was never backed up, then the camcorder got stolen out of his work truck. I don't know the exact type of minigun it was I got to use, but it wasn't as huge as you might think, it weighed about 50% more than a Armalite .50 cal bolt action, which is definitely heavy, and while I wouldn't describe it as a very "controllable" weapon, you can definitely accurately aim it to land most shots at something the size of a car or so from a modest distance. The one I used had a tripod you were able to fire it from, but I had the option of holding it terminator 2 style. (It was a fair bit smaller than the one in the movie btw)
You may be interested to know that a company called Empty Shell are producing a weapon called the XM556 Microgun, designed to be man-portable, fire 5.56 rounds, and weighing only a little over 7 kilos unloaded. You may not be able to fire a minigun as a man-portable weapon, but someone wanted to change that.
another disadvantage in some games is that it has a slow rate of fire while revving up, and then fireing fast like pew, pew, pew, pew pew peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew...
The way you presented this and your lovely accent reminded me of Top Gear so much. This was like if Top Gear did a "Top Gun" and presented it in a similar way.
I am Heavy Weapons Guy...and this is my weapon. She weighs one hundred fifty kilograms and fires two hundred dollar, custom-tooled cartridges at ten thousand rounds per minute. It costs four hundred thousand dollars to fire this weapon...for twelve seconds."
You seemed to have completely skipped over the limited existence of the XM214 Microgun, a scaled down version of the M134 chambered in 5.56x45, also known as the GE Six-Pak, it was definitely man portable and useable by hand, however was completely impractical and thus never went into production... the minigun in Serious Sam is the XM214, which does mean that one is in fact not completely unrealistic.
I am actually surprised that someone else knew about this god among killing machines. Though there has been talk of using an exo system similar to what is used industrial work to be used with the current M134 to lighten the weight and recoil. I'm not sure what became of that idea.
stwcrusher I'm gonna take a stab and guess the reason it's not a thing is because exosuits aren't really a thing yet... Not anything that could feasably see combat, anyways... we have a long ways to go before that happens.
***** The thing is there is no need for a man portable minigun. Way too much bullets and weight for absolutely no reason. If you want support fire you don't really need anything more than an LMG for a squadmate at an infantry level.
Simple, scale it down to a .22 round, 4-5 barrels instead of six (slightly lessened RPM, from 2000-6000 to 750-5000. Its defiantly possible to make a "Mini mini-gun" Just not practical.
the exact reason for development of M134 was infact that in Vietnam war us air force had no idea where To shoot at as NVA troops were so good at hiding in the jungle. so they figured out that they didnt need To see Charlie, they simply dumped as many rounds into the woods from air as possible and got back To Base To refit the aircraft. for example AC-47 was made solely for this purpose; a old C-47 with M134's sticking out of almost every window. they circled the supposed NVA positions at night and just sprayed the living shit out of everything down there, without even knowing if there was any NVA down there. To me that sounds as american as it can get, and great fun for gunners
Huge companies like GE have their hands in everything. Think of them like the umbrella corperation, there in almost every industry directly or indirectly.
What is interesting is the Minigun is actually more accurate than a normal machine gun, due to the barrels compensating for the recoil, according to Future Weapons. An awesomely powerful weapon, designed for destruction.
Recoil compensation does not have an effect on accuracy of a weapon, unless referring to accuracy over sustained fire. Recoil and accuracy are 2 different things: Accuracy refers to the grouping of a given number of shots down a certain range to test a weapon's precision in firing. Recoil is jerking action, typically upwards, from firing a conventional weapon rapidly. A normal, fixed-barrel machine gun is going to be just as if not more accurate due to caliber available and fixed-barrel design. Maybe what the show claimed was that during sustained fire, the minigun was more accurate. A single barreled machine gun will be as accurate otherwise, but not during sustained fire. One issue I do see with the minigun's accuracy compared to a machine gun's is its barrel length. The minigun's barrel is shorter, theoretically making for less accuracy.
***** Machine guns are almost never select-fire, and are designed to be used in short bursts at the least, long bursts at the most. So recoil compensation absolutely has an effect on accuracy when you're talking about machine guns. Also the barrels on the M134 (or GAU-2/A or GAU-2B/A or Mk 25 Mod 0, depending on branch) are 22", about the length of your standard hunting rifle barrel. It's enough for a 7.62mm round to stabilize and reach a good velocity. I also believe that some variants, like the US Air Force's GAU-17/A, have slightly longer barrels.
Accuracy in the context hear may be more colloquial than its technical use, too. Accuracy and precision are colloquially used as synonyms, but in technical context they have distinctly different meanings. A weapon that is accurate lands all of its shots equal distance from the target, but many of these shots may not be very close to the bullseye. As long as the average position of the shots is roughly the bullseye, then it's considered accurate. Precision, on the other hand, is about grouping. If you have a tight grouping, then a weapon is considered precise, even if the grouping isn't near the bullseye. The most desirable is obviously a weapon that is both precise and accurate, this means that all of the shots form a tight grouping very close to the bullseye.
sonicpsycho13 Well, with the technical definitions, all you need is precision, and accuracy can be solved for by adjusting the sights accordingly. So, for firearms use, precision is almost always what is being referred to.
smittywjmj Miniguns are way more often used for suppressive fire though. A guy firing a gun at 6000 rpm from a helicopter is sure to keep a fairly large area of enemy heads down, enough to give your allies a breather. In this respect it's not entirely necessary to accurately aim, since if the enemy moves from behind cover they take a huge risk of being clipped by an (unintendedly aimed) minigun bullet.
The video should have mentioned that while minguns in games take time to spin up and fire, in real life the spin up is barely noticeable on externally powered miniguns like M134 Minigun or XM214 Microgun. They probably do this in games and movies for effect and to level the playing field for enemies and make things challenging for the user so as not to make the game too easy (if there was no spin up time like in games, you could just go around and pop shot everyone with out waiting for a spin up making near constant firing or spinning to make it useful in a hot area) If anything the only type of "Minigun" or multiple barrelled rotary machine gun that takes time to spin up to its full speed would be gas powered types like the russian Gsh-7.62. The Gsh-7.62 is similiart ot he minigun in that it has multiple barrels and a similar mode of operation for firing, extracting, and loading (which also means that gas powered rotary machine guns like miniguns rarely if ever jam on a bad round). The Gsh-7.62 is gas operated which means it uses no motors, and it doesnt take any time to spin up before firing although it does take a moment to get up to full firing speed, so you can still fire a gas powered mingun from stand still but it will fire slowly at first until its barrels spin up to full speed allowing for them to fire at their max firing rate.
The other thing worth noting is that, spin up time or no, the simple act of rotating the barrels causes them to chamber, fire and extract, meaning the only way to be able to spool up a minigun without burning ammo is to disconnect the feed somehow. As far as I know, one of the few modern games to get this aspect down is Halo, with the three-barreled turret gun firing from the moment you hit the trigger; the only issue is that it starts off at a very low RoF that only speeds up as the barrels speed up. Why the rotation is so slow to begin with we can only guess, but it's probably for the same reason as the other examples; to avoid making the thing too OP.
I played a game once where the Minigun used ammo while spinning but not firing. This seems realistic and sorta advanced. Still had a slow spin up though
Matt Brine you know they cant use it in planes because the vibrations would break it apart and the recoil would make it uncontrolable.... so they Can only use it on ground-fixed platforms
The Gatling gun sounds like a great name, I’m glad that man made it because he mmmmm if someone else has done it, it would have sounded like a bad name
LtCWest it's an exoskeleton that has armor plates on it. that's power armor imo and i did say that they're developing, not finished and testing. also, thor (or what's it called) exoskeleton isn't power armor, it's just a skeleton made so soldiers wouldn't become tired as often and it'd increase carying capacity and endurance
The most American solution to the question of how do I stop some big mean mother Hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind; “use a gun, and if that don’t work, use more gun.” Thanks engie
There have been some attempts at man portable miniguns, like the XM214 Microgun, which fires the 5.56mm NATO from two 500 round magazines from a back pack, which also carries the battery to run the motors. Though I think they could do away with the electric stuff and go with something more like the Russian Gas-operated miniguns. I also hate how most games depict the minigun taking time to spin up and fire, electric driven miniguns fire near instantly, and gas-operated miniguns also fire instantly but may take a second or two to get up to full speed.
if a minigun in a video game could fire instantly then the enemy wouldn't be able to kill you before they get teared to shreds. the delay makes it so they aren't overpowered.
+Matt Brine And either the sound of the gun firing, or its apparent rate of fire visible though its bullet output or ammunition useage, can often leave one wondering "Why does this have multiple barrels, again? It doesn't fire nearly fast enough to need more than one."

Odd that equipping the heavy weapon will slow you down but putting it back in your inventory (along with the rest of your arsenal) and pulling out a little pistol will speed you up.
perhaps the gun fires blanks backwards giving you propulsion?

John Mclain XM556 handheld minigun
How in the world did you get a Vulcan?

You may be interested to know that a company called Empty Shell are producing a weapon called the XM556 Microgun, designed to be man-portable, fire 5.56 rounds, and weighing only a little over 7 kilos unloaded.

Can I just point out that Sasha weighs 150 kilos? That's 330 pounds! THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY!
It costs 200,000$ an hour to operate Air Force One. And for this weapon, it’s double that, and it takes twelve seconds.
I'm not sure what became of that idea.
stwcrusher
I'm gonna take a stab and guess the reason it's not a thing is because exosuits aren't really a thing yet... Not anything that could feasably see combat, anyways... we have a long ways to go before that happens.
Ya. Actually it might have evolved into the knew advanced point-man armor program (cant remember name).
***** The thing is there is no need for a man portable minigun. Way too much bullets and weight for absolutely no reason. If you want support fire you don't really need anything more than an LMG for a squadmate at an infantry level.

I realize this, hence my saying "It was completely impractical and thus never went into full production".
"Some people think they can outsmart me, maybe, maybe. I have yet to meet one that can outsmart bullet"
Simple, scale it down to a .22 round, 4-5 barrels instead of six (slightly lessened RPM, from 2000-6000 to
750-5000. Its defiantly possible to make a "Mini mini-gun" Just not practical.
There have been attempts. The XM214 Microgun was once such, and the army showed no interest in infantry use.

the exact reason for development of M134 was infact that in Vietnam war us air force had no idea where To shoot at as NVA troops were so good at hiding in the jungle. so they figured out that they didnt need To see Charlie, they simply dumped as many rounds into the woods from air as possible and got back To Base To refit the aircraft. for example AC-47 was made solely for this purpose; a old C-47 with M134's sticking out of almost every window. they circled the supposed NVA positions at night and just sprayed the living shit out of everything down there, without even knowing if there was any NVA down there. To me that sounds as american as it can get, and great fun for gunners

"I am Heavy Weapons Guy."

They probably do this in games and movies for effect and to level the playing field for enemies and make things challenging for the user so as not to make the game too easy (if there was no spin up time like in games, you could just go around and pop shot everyone with out waiting for a spin up making near constant firing or spinning to make it useful in a hot area)
If anything the only type of "Minigun" or multiple barrelled rotary machine gun that takes time to spin up to its full speed would be gas powered types like the russian Gsh-7.62.
Matt Brine So the heavy from TF2 got it right...ish.
As Ahoy put it, it gets a pass by virtue of being awesome.
The Gatling gun sounds like a great name, I’m glad that man made it because he mmmmm if someone else has done it, it would have sounded like a bad name
"Impossible" "Heavy" "Lots of recoil" "Needs External power source"
If you're trying to prove that point, don't show power armor.
+Matt „Rocketman“ Schmelzer Power armor is still only a theoretical concept. He was talking about real life applications.
LtCWest
True.
+LtCWest US are developing a set of power armor.
Anti Master Nope, its an exo-skelleton its also nowhere near a finished state as power supply is still an issue.

I also hate how most games depict the minigun taking time to spin up and fire, electric driven miniguns fire near instantly, and gas-operated miniguns also fire instantly but may take a second or two to get up to full speed.
if a minigun in a video game could fire instantly then the enemy wouldn't be able to kill you before they get teared to shreds. the delay makes it so they aren't overpowered.
games have to be balanced somehow
+Matt Brine And either the sound of the gun firing, or its apparent rate of fire visible though its bullet output or ammunition useage, can often leave one wondering "Why does this have multiple barrels, again? It doesn't fire nearly fast enough to need more than one."
My question is can a gas piston operate 6 barrels simultaneously (or near simultaneously)?
No, but 6 gas pistons can. Lol.
