The Quest For .400
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 лип 2024
- Luis Arraez is the first player since 2000 to play 81 games while maintaining a .380 or higher average. Naturally, this puts him in the conversation of those who came close to hitting the illustrious .400. In this video, we look at 4 of those players who took the baseball world by storm coming close to finishing a full season with a .400 average.
Mistakes/Clarifications
5:51 - City of *Minneapolis
7:28 - I should've put a note on the graph that George Brett missed an entire month of the season (June 10th-July 10th). This is why his season flatlined at this point.
14:18 - Mutli

I see a lot of people asking why I didn’t cover Tony Gwynn’s 1994. I chose not to deliberately because
A. To cover it means I’d have to discuss the ‘94 strike which I felt would’ve went against the overall theme of this video
B. I believe Sportstorm covered everything there is to cover with Gwynn, including his historical ‘94 campaign.
Either way, please check out And That’s Baseball’s video about the 1994 strike or Storm’s video on Gwynn for more information about each.
94 Strike: ua-cam.com/video/MqVdRMH_Z6E/v-deo.html
Gwynn: ua-cam.com/video/qfCvmAVmdXM/v-deo.html
I still think you could've covered it, even if briefly mentioning it by name. He hit .394 117 games into his team's season. All the players you mentioned in the video fizzled late into the season starting around the 90-100 game mark. I can't recall anyone since Ted Williams who hit for that high of an average that late into the season.
You didnt have to go into detail about the strike. It really is a diss that you did not include the one batter that actually was the closest to get to .400. NO ONE talks about Nomar's 2000 season when talking about possible .400 seasons. He finished at .372 and yet you start your video talking about the.380 mark
You could make an entire video about Gwynn’s quest for .400. The strike shortened season was a heartbreaker, ending at .394, but of course not a full season. Had he hit over .400 in 94 there would forever be an asterisk beside it. However he hit .351 in 84, .353 in 96, .358 in 93, .368 in 95, .370 in 87 and .372 in 97. It seems at least one of those seasons could have been covered. He was still at .402 on July 15th in 97 before falling below .400 yet hovering close to it for much of the rest of that season.
Yeah I understand that his 94 season was controversial but he still batted 370 one season and 360 in another so you could’ve talked ab that and you could’ve maybe said how his 94 for season was historic but it was controversial
Completely disrespectful to not include Gwyn or give any context.
Can’t wait for the segment about my high school senior season
insane, you shoulda won the mvp that year
What did u hit
@@Volssolo presumably a baseball, like a lot.
@@aarondaugherty3920 🤣🤣🤣
@@aarondaugherty3920🤣💀
We can’t talk about the quest for .400 without Tony Gwynn, never finished a full year with a batting average under .300.
Gwynn had numerous seasons comparable to those in this video, not just the strike shortened 94 season. His 97 season ended with a .372 average. He was still over .400 in mid July of that year.
Gwynn could have his own quest for .400 video.
That would be a cool one to see.
I came to see if anyone talked about Gwynn. Thank you for mentioning it.
I really hope that Luis Arraez can hit .400, and I’ll be cheering him on for that glorious achievement
Statistically speaking it will be highly unlikely. See one of my posts on this as to why.
He’s cooked now. Hes at .377. Which is awesome but it’s impossible unless this dude has the best stretch in baseball history out of no where. Which if he does?? Boy ill tune in every game for that
@@Tampafan33 assuming he gets 607AB at his current pace he needs to hit .441 assuming he gets 4 AB for each game for the reamining 55 marlins games. No way he gets that. The odds are extremely unlikely and well less than 1%.
@@Tampafan33there is two months left in the season. So it’s not over yet.
@@aidenawe9359It’s definitely over lol. I’m too tired to do the math, but I’m willing to bet he’d need to go roughly 3-4 in every game in order to get the average back up.
I want to talk about Todd Helton in 2000. As far as I know, Helton is the only guy since Williams to have pulled off a .400 average with enough PA to qualify for the full-season title. Let me explain:
Entering play on August 21, 2000, Helton had 176 hits in 442 AB -- a .398 average. Helton did the following in his first three ABs that day:
- Single in the 1st
- Lineout in the 4th
- Single in the 6th
As of that moment, Helton had 532 PA on the season. That's enough to full-season qualify for the batting title. He had 178 hits in 445 AB. That's a batting average of precisely .400.
Helton finished the game by striking out in the 8th, and grounding out in the 9th. Thus he ended the day under .400, and he wasn't able to get back. Still: if he had quit playing for the season after that 6th inning single, he would have had a qualifying .400 BA season.
If Helton didnt struggle in that September 2000, he could have won the NL MVP that season
You really should do a video on Rogers Hornsby, considering he averaged over 400 for 5 consecutive years, with the highest aveage of 424.
The ‘94 strike robbed us of possibly seeing the Expos in the World Series, but it robbed us of seeing the best hitter since Ted Williams hit .400. I’m talking about Tony Gwynn. I think he had a great shot of doing it. The only hitters to come close to Gwynn since has been Ichiro and Cabrera.
Loved Gwynn, but the strike shortened season stopped me from watching for years and I disliked the McGuire/Sosa battle later. My White Sox were in first.
I thought maybe Keith Hernandez run would have been in this. People forget about him since he was in between Brett and Carew.
Also, Gwynn's .394 season
That was a strike shortened season unfortunately. However Gwynn did have several full seasons comparable to players in this video. He hit .372 in 97. He was still over .400 on July 15th of that season. Gwynn could be his own quest for .400 video.
Still seems odd Gwynn would not be mentioned, as he hit .370 or above 3 times.
john Olerud is one of the most underrated players of the 1990s. he hit doubles had a great average and could it the 20 HR mark. he was even a gold glove level defender
Damn straight.
One of the most humble players too
I agree.
I think what really makes .400 extremely difficult besides dealing with like a million pitchers now is the media. The moment you're in that .400 conversation, the sports media will follow you inch by inch breathing down your neck and the pressure just continues to mount more and more. So it's impossible to just focus on the achievement when you have like a 360 angle of cameras following your every move.
I may have overlooked/ missed you mention 1994 ‘s Tony Gwyn pursuit for .400. That dog gone strike put a stop to that
Batting average matters, because getting on base matters.
It matters but it's a bit overrated since it doesnt include walks, sacrifices, hbp, and lumps homeruns in with singles. Youd much rather have ohtani hitting than arraez since every statistical measure ohtani drives more runs and creates more runs than any other player in the league right now.
Found your channel from the "Every team's cult hero" videos and have rewatched those two multiple times. Its the music choices for me. I live in Ireland and aside from scratching a weird itch i developed for baseball, this channel has helped me get more of a feel for regional culture in the US, love your work ❤
you do such a great job setting the era in-between talking about the different players. great video btw! :)
Another insanely well made video. Keep it up, your stuff is insanely good
Can’t believe you don’t have 100x the subs. Can tell you put in a lot of effort and it pays off. Awesome content. Great knowledge, incredible clips and b-roll. Rarely do I click on a 20 min. video and watch till the end. Keep it up and you’ll be rewarded. Nice work
He’ll get to 100k in two years.
another beautiful video!! the way you present these topics and narratives is just amazing to watch
and your soundtracks are sensational every time i love it
I think if Ichiro played in one of those Little League parks back East like Nomar he would have finished above.400 and broken the hits record.
Great video, both information and style working to tell a story. Ted Williams will probably last a century as "the last guy to do it."
Ichiro challenges .420 if he played half his games at Fenway Park
This channel is unbelievably underrated. First vid I stumbled upon was the Replacing Chipper episode. Keep uploading and go Braves.
The fact that he left out Tony Gwynn who had the highest batting average since Ted Williams 407 season makes me concerned. Tony Gwynn played through the steroid ERA with pitchers who were taking steroids and he still batted 394.
Probably because that season wasn't a full season & can't be properly compared.
If someone hit .400 in the 60 game 2020 season you wouldn't think that it's as special as the possibility of Arraez hitting .400 this year
@@catman-du8927he was actually trending upwards by the end of the season. If it wasn't shortened, he probably would have hit 400
Please see me pinned comment
@@evanfunk7335 There were ~45 games left in the season when the season was stopped. We have no idea if he would have kept going strong or would have gone into a slump
@@nomorefieldersit’s not pinned
Wade Boggs hit .401 from 6/9/85 to 6/6/86 in a 162 game span. But cross season spans aren't really valued for that. :)
That’s still impressive even if it won’t get recognized by the history books
@@nomorefielders Gwynn also did it but it was over 3 seasons due to a strike. But yes I agree
That’s cool information to have thx for sharing. I think it should count
@@jdinspires16 Just a cool piece of trivia I attained a long time ago. :)
1: That Rush Limbaugh fact was one hell of a gut punch
2: I appreciate the subtle condemnation of 2020s music
3: We're just gonna ignore Tony Gywnn like that?
How’s it a “gut punch?” Because he became a right-wing pudnit? I tuned in to him during the Royals’ WS run occasionally to hear gems about having covered the team.
He was such an extreme “journalist” I’m not sure people like Limbaugh believe their own words. Like Skip Bayless in the sports world, they’re extreme & contrarian for the sake of being exactly that.
However you feel about his politics, he had some great takes on baseball and fascinating tales about the Royals.
Incredible production value, both in editing and writing. And it’s about baseball? Easiest subscription of my life
Thank you!
Good video and the first I've seen from this channel! I was surprised not to see more stats discussion on the current .400 pursuit. Seemed truncated
Such an amazing baseball channel
'93 Olerud but no '94 Gwynn? That's a crime.
Yeah I’m getting transferred up to county while I await my trial as I’m typing this
@@nomorefielders best of luck, hope your judge isn't a huge Padres fan
Came from the Juan Gonzalez video! Glad to have found the channel.
Batting .400 is kinda like digging out all the dirt in a level of dig dug. Its neither the objective of the game or the best way of accomplishing the objective, but its hard enough and takes enough skill that its more impressive than just winning the level by playing perfectly
It’s especially notable if anyone does it these days because it seems like most players are told to swing for power more often.
Great video! Good luck with the channel! 👍🏻
First vid of yours I've seen, keep up the good work 🤟

love your videos man, don't believe how you don't have like a million subscribers already
Impressive video! Very well done.
It doesn't count officially of course, but over a 162 game stretch from June
of 1985 to June of 1986, Wade Boggs hit .400.
You basically summed up how I feel about BA. An antiquated tool for evaluation, but one I can still appreciate in Arraez’ case due to the sheer skill it takes.
Doesn’t hurt that he’s a Marlin, either 👌
Batting average should absolutely be acknowledged when measuring pure hitting abilities.
But walking and power are also a thing, and that’s why people use other stats.
Me personally, I like to look at Aaron Gleeman’s Gross Production Average:
((1.8*OBP)+SLG)/4)+.02
That stat has the same all time average as batting average, and a similar standard deviation, and has about an 86.2% correlation to teams scoring runs.
What video led me to discover this channel? Im not sure but based off the introduction & the fact that i wasnt previously subscribed im guessing this video. Good job, loved the video!
The quest for 400! Great Vid love the info
This was a super well made video. Shocked you don't have more subs. Keep up the great work!
huge fan here of Olerud guy was unbelievable for the Jays during their early 90s runs , The epitome of Clutch , just like Alomar and Carter
I was a right handed hitter in baseball, but in wiffle ball I batted left and copied Rod. Called myself Cod Rarew and was unstoppable. Thanks Rod!
Any video with Luis arraez on the cover you know it’s a banger
This video made me discover this channel.
Batting average, a counting stat divided by a counting stat, is beautiful in a way that BABIP, FIP, WRC+, OPS+, and OAA aren't, even if it's a century and a half old measure of someone's rate of success. It's not about how hard or far you hit the ball, the home field you play in, how likely it was for the ball you hit to become a hit and why that should matter, or the amount of standard deviations between you and the "average". It's about consistently getting positive results for your team over a prolonging period of chances to produce, and like all stats, it has its flaws and fluctuations, its uses and predictability. Whether the threshold or number for "average", "good", "legendary" means anything to you or the batter, to someone, it means keeping your head up for an entire year, no matter the fanfare or perceived luck and exploitation, and doing what some believe is impossible in this era. Numbers can spell a story, a feeling, or an incredible culmination of effort in a way that music and words can only occasionally hold a candle to.
Nicely done
What a cool video!
Update 7-31-23: assuming luis reaches 607 at bats right now he needs to hit .441 the rest of the way to average .400. Basically he has no shot. A player who is hitting .377 has less than a 1% chance of hitting .441 over a 55 game span.
As much as I would like to see it, I don't think Luis Arraez will do it. I just think that the best player to do it was Ichiro (and maybe Bonds...but he was on the juice) and he didn't really come that close to it and he was a better hitter than Luis. He hit .372 in 2004 getting the single season hits record. Gwynn hit .394 in a strike shortened season and easily had the best shot, but even for a guy like that he wouldn't replicate that season. It's ridiculous to assume anyone can.
In order for Luis to reach .400, assuming he reaches 607 AB (4 ABs per game for the remaining 56 games) based on playing the rest of the season he needs to hit .433 the rest of the way. .433 is such an unfathomable number this day in age and this late into the season. He needs to get to 243 hits and needs 97 more hits the rest of the way to reach 400. With the 56 games remaining he has never hit anywhere close to that in any 56 game stretch during his career and it would be extremely improbable for him to do so.
If he gets more than 607 AB then he needs a lower than .433 average to get .400. If he gets fewer ABs then he needs a higher than .433 average to get .400.
I found your channel from the “replacing chipper jones” video. Awesome stuff
Thank you!
As a Marlins fan, can't believe I missed this video. only wish i'd seen this when it came out at the height of the Arraez hype. well, he'll just have to do it again next year. Viva la Regadera!

I discovered this channel from the Juan Gonzalez video. Big Rangers fan so the title of it had caught my attention.
Man I really wish you busted out the Graph for Luiz Arraez, even if its only halfway thorugh the season. It was so cool to see it used for the journies of the others and its a crime that you didnt use it for him.
I was thinking about it, but I’ll create one for him once the regular season ends and share it in a community post.
20 seconds in, and I already know this is gonna be a great video. Can't wait to see you blow up one day.
Imma say it. Batting over .360 in this era is like hitting 400 back then.
100% agreed
Not everyone can be Cobb, like Cobb said anybody can hit a HR but it's a good given talent to hit .400.
Great ending montage
I know this wasn't intended but describing Boston as a "pressure cooker" is pretty ironic considering the 2013 Marathon. Another very well-put-together video!
Oh geez I didn’t even realize I kinda blocked that memory out. Definitely not my intent, just a common phrase to refer to an intense sports city as a pressure cooker.
@@nomorefielders trust me I get it, more of my brain being used to associating phrases with tragedy at this point… having a history degree will train your mind to do that lol
@@Baseballcardkingz you aren’t the only one to point it out and as someone who has family from Boston, I should’ve thought about using that phrase for a second.

The AL shortstop position in the late 90’s/early 2000s was ridiculous. Jeter, A-Rod, Miguel Tejada,, Omar Vizquel… y’all can let me know who I missed. And the crazy thing is that peak Nomar may have been the best of them. Undoubtedly his body had other ideas. Which is too bad cuz he could have potentially been an all time great.

Im still mad about the 94 strike. My Reds were in first place and Paul Oneil was having a great year
No More Fielders back with another video on his favorite stat
No my favorite stat is Fielding Percentage
Good video, not sure when a player could EVEN threat to hit .390 again over the next couple years, not sure if Arraez will hold up.
Nice choice on the digable planets
I’m cool like that
@@nomorefielders I think I caught a parquet court’s reference in an older video I recently watched too, solid choice
Gwynn would have done it in 94
I was not looking forward to the Nomar part.. thought about just FF'ing through it, but I sucked it up and watched it and now I'm heartbroken all over again that he got traded right before they finally won it.
Brandon Marsh has a .401 BAbip, which is perhaps more impressive. OBP is a far more important stat. The only player in the last 75 seasons to finish with a .500+ OBP was Barry, who did it four times.
This video reminded me how much I hated watching a Nomar Garciaparra at bat. Thanks for that.
The absolute disrespect of not having Tony Gwynn on the thumbnail

Kept waiting for Todd Helton. He was still in the .390’s as late as September in 200
What is most amazing is Rogers Hornsby who averaged over .400 for 5 consecutive years. He didn’t hit over .400 every year, but his average was over .400. Will not be approached ever.
The Big Cat also hit .370 in '93
The classic triple slash is still the best way to assess a player
9/10 vid, only deducted a point because it needed more Smooth (1999) by Santana and Rob Thomas
I almost cut Smooth (1999) but my producers told me I should keep it if I want to attract the ‘millennial’ demographic
As a former San Diego resident I do not understand why you left Tony Gwynn off the video. That is reprehensible..because...Tony Gwynn hit .402 over a 162-game period ending in 1995. From July 27th 1993 through May 13, 1995, Gwynn appeared in 162 games, and had 704 plate appearances. He had 624 at-bats with 251 hits (.402 BA), as well as 15 HR, 100 RBI, 121 runs scored, a .457 OBP and a .563 SLG.
I’m sorry my video caused you so much personal turmoil
Tony Gwynn would have hit 400 in 96 before the strike shortened season
Maybe...he's certainly the only one I remember since Ted Williams who hit over .390 117 games into his team's season. He had the best chance for sure.
The ice glacier video made me find this channel
Disappointed not to see chipper jones’’08 season on here since he was over .400 for a long time that season but overall cool video
He started to fall off during June. Most of the criteria in this video revolves around the batters hitting .400 or near .400 during/post All-Star Break. Still an impressive season from Chipper considering his age (hit .364).
Keep the stretch going Luis. One game at a time.
Always heard people talk about Carew as this singles guy, didn't realize he had a nearly 10 WAR season while crushing a 3/4/5
I use to watch Carew Square up to bunt. Then pull the bat back n slap it thru the infield. He was a peice of work!
Ouch.... poor Nomar Garciaparra! I forgot about him & how good he was. Who was the A's shortstop around the same time that also put up similar numbers if i remember correctly? Oh ya Tejada i believe.
Ted Williams, the last one to hit 400 entered the final day of the 1941 season with a 400 batting average and instead of sitting out the scheduled doubleheader against the A’s, a move that would clinch him 400, he played both games, went 6-for-8, and finished with a .406 average.
John olerud is so underrated man
I agree.
I discovered this channel through a collaboration you had with someone, or a throwaway mention by someone. I know I hit you up with shoegaze bands on Twitter afterwards, though.
Oh wait was it the Joe Charboneau video with Baseball Historian?
Either way I’m glad and appreciate the support (and the awesome recommendations)
What a great video ❤❤❤
If analytics has made hitting .400 seem antiquated, then call me grandpa!!!
@16:11 - The reason we care about BA so much is because it's fun to watch someone hit the ball. That's really it. I try to convince older family folk of the legitimacy of analytics/sabermetrics. It is an important part of the game. But the analytical community surrounding baseball has forgotten what's fun about the game. Players who hit for a high average are the most exciting players to watch. Every time they come up to the plate you know there's a good chance something extraordinary might happen. I really hope the game returns to a state where higher average hitters are valued again.
It’s pretty crazy that some of people actually need something so simple explained to them
Wow, the video totally missed out on Gwynn, which was the closest anyone has come since 1941.
Short season , strike season? Brett .390 over a full season.
