In 1910, an automotive mogul by the name of Hugh Chalmers announced that the winner of that year's batting title (leading the league in batting average) would be personally rewarded with a Chalmers Model 30 car, a rare entity to own back then. What ensued was MLB's first national scandal, and somehow it led to the creation of the MVP award.

ty cobb was once asked how he would fare against todays pitchers to which cobb replied i'd only hit about 270 and the guy asked why he thought that cobb replied because i'm 72 years old. classic answer.

I’m still a bit all over the place when it comes to my thoughts on Cobb as a person, but one thing you can’t disagree with was that the man had an amazing sense of humor in his later years.

There’s a podcast getting started called Real Baseball Talk. Real underground atm, think they’re only on instagram, but I’ve heard those guys will have a ton of baseball content on stuff that hasn’t been regurgitated by every single baseball UA-cam account ever

Keep it up man. Your videos are gold. A better mic/recording setup, more confidence and emotion in your voice (it's a little too meek for YT), some well-timed and well-adjusted music, and a little more flair with your editing; your videos will be platinum and you'll hit 100k subs by the end of the year. Foolish Baseball found his niche in the absurd, but Bailey is a unicorn and I don't think you're suited for that kind of video. The gold-standard, and the person that you need to study right now is Baseball Doesn't Exist. I think you can find the perfect spot in baseball YT if you blended your Secret Base-style-vocals and research with BDE's level of panache.
TL:DR You definitely have a YT career ahead of you.

  • @big8dog887

Good video. The only nitpick I have is the assertion that Ty Cobb grew up poor, he actually came from a fairly well-to-do family, his father was a college professor and a state senator who supported education for black people (not a popular stand in late 19th century Georgia). Cobb's father was against him playing baseball, thought it was beneath him, but when Ty insisted, his father said "Don't come back a failure." Cobb's father never saw Ty become a success, as he was shot and killed by his mother (she claimed that she thought he was a burglar) weeks before Ty's MLB debut. This at least in part explains Ty's maniacal competitiveness.

So Basically a few Hall Of Famers competing to see who can crush the ball the hardest for a full season. Wish I could see 5 such players competing for something like this, although I suppose 90's endless hof pichers dueling was a treat in its own right.

Also for a topic idea, I suggest looking into the career of Buzz Arlett. Fascinating superstar who only got one year in the MLB due to a series of incidents but absolutely dominated the minor league circuit out west. I’ve only recently dove into him myself for an OOTP card I’m making, but it’s a very rich story I think you’d do great with!!

5:54 Now I cannot finish the video because I'm thinking of how Freddie might leave my Dodgers for the Braves and be the DH. I thought it was a shame he left the Braves even though he was joining the Dodgers. I had just thought it was the right move for baseball if Freddie retired a Brave, but now I want him to retire a Dodger and have a Frank Robinson like stretch with his second team. No backsies! Also there's a mistake on the team(s) column after Freddie.

Tongue-in-cheek means "facetiously" (not sure what the presenter meant, but surely it was not that).
What's more, while more importance today is assigned to power stats than was the case in the Dead Ball Era (or even as recently as 20 years ago), the Batting Ttitle certainly isn't trivial or irrelevant. It is the offensive equivalent of the ERA title.
It is well to remember, too, that one of the reasons batting titles have lost some of their luster is the relatively low (historically speaking) average typically posted by the champion in today's data-driven/launch-angle/always-swing-for-the-fences era.

Kind of funny that the St. Louis Browns teamed up with Cleveland after the ownership in the 1890's screwed the then Cleveland Spiders. They owned both teams and sent all the talent from Cleveland to St. Louis, including legend Cy Young. Cleveland being unable to retain players almost seems like a curse stemming from that moment.

    • @nomorefielders

Most early players before the Black Sox scandal cheated or threw games. Even back in 1871, there were people fixing games. Thank Curt Flood for kickstarting the players' union so we will never have that problem again. Now players only cheat to win. Pete Rose, steroids, spider tack, and the trash cans. I'm sure there will be cheaters in the future too, but at least they won't be intentionally losing games. It makes statistics pointless if they throw games.
Also, kudos for throwing in a Lolita Express pic.
