Daniel's business was his religion, and Eli's religion was his business.
EDGYYYYYYYY
That is what I love about Anderson's films...so damn deep. The Master= The story of the leader and the follower...and how both need each other to function in their roles in society.
Accurate description
Very apt
That was a god-damned good show
One of the greatest films ever made! Antagonist vs Antagonist. The oil man representing human greed & pride to gain power of an Empire. The Preacher representing self righteousness & divine worship all to feed a false prophets ego. These vices of each are what built America and here we see them clash. Power over resource meets power over the people. All tuned with a masterful musical score. Is one vice worse than the other? Are they equal? Who knows. Even when Daniel sees the mountain that hides its oil beneath we hear an eerie music almost as if the oil is a villain itself. A masterpiece.
Willy Winker note that oil acts as greed’s version of holy water, baptizing the baby HW and fake henrys body being buried in it
so whats about the milkshake metaphor ?
well explained
nicely put
Satan vs God. Simple as that. Both are good and evil. Choose your side.
This movie does something to me that no other movie I've ever seen does. It's disturbing and hilarious and full of truth about very bad things.
+Bruno 148 agree about the Master, but TWBB is on its own level. It’s just perfect. I literally can’t think of anything wrong with it.
Mark B well some of the minor acting was bland, but you can argue that was intentional due to the uninterested world and time PTA made
Does it make you dream of striking oil?
you mean about -- very common things )
The favourite category for me is the realistic category
I do think Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor of modern times. The thing is, after seeing everything he's been in, I still have absolutely no idea what sort of person he might be. Other actors, you at least feel that you're getting some glimpse into their essential being, even if you're wrong. But with Day-Lewis he just puts up this impenetrable wall, that makes his characters amazingly believable and the man himself utterly unknowable.
That's his gift.
Thats a good move artistically. An actor who appears too much in media, who let the public get to know the actors true personlity, risk breaking the illusion on screen. People primarily see the actor as oppsed to the charracter.
@@FroggyJumps747
Ya but his process is so well known that it’s even worse than doing interviews
He seems to be a genuinely humble, nice person. He worked as a shoemaker in Florence for a couple of years, before Scorsese convinced him to act in Gangs of New York. I know people who have met him, and they all said he doesn't act like a Hollywood star at all and that he's a very down to earth guy.
I agree, and that's a very poetic way to put it. Well said.
Crazy how great 2007 for film. There will be blood, zodiac, no country for old men... all masterpieces

Nobody talks about Paul Dano being great in this movie
So underrated
But then he started giving the same performance in later films.
Because he was awful
He was really good but Daniel Day Lewis was towering over everyone in TWBB
Mr. Law fuck you slime
It's like a horror movie where the monster's the main character.
True that :)

That's my favorite part about the movie
Yet your can sympathise with him. And you admire him too. Except for his worst behaviour.
So the shining.
I honestly believe this is the greatest movie ever made.

Masterclass from Daniel Day-Lewis. Best Performance ive ever seen in a Movie.
+Patrick Drum That´s why he got an oscar for it.
I have, and I think this is best performance by an actor. Don't get me wrong, raging bull is my favorite movie and Scorsese and de niro are my favorites, but this edges other performances out. Just my opinion. And by no means saying de niro in raging bull was bad. That performance was also one of the greatest
Khizar Farooq
De Niro was just better. He transformed into a real boxer... all the critics agree with me too
J B
Actually you say nonsense 🤣
Literally every critic agree and the majority of Media and people...
@@Gma00001 Two great actors but Daniel Day Lewis is the pinnacle. De Niro does not have Daniel's range. To be honest De Niro is not even close to Lewis and I am a big De Niro fan.
At this point I stand to refer to Paul Dano as the one man punching bag of cinema. Why? Because it seems like every role he's in, he gets the living crap beaten out of him. Prisoners, Cowboys and Aliens, 12 Years A Slave, Knight and Day, Looper, There Will Be Blood, the list goes on.

Even after watching the movie time and time again, the trailer still gives me chills.
Amazing movie, on my top ten.
+Cine Mata I stated watching movies obsessively over the past year/year and a half. I watch everything from action to some foreign movies to horror (and even some b horror like bloody birthday), black and white films, the latest big action movie all the way to little known dramas, I just love anything and everything movies. Here are my favorite ten films out of the couple hundred I've watched. They will be roughly in order but I could spend all day arranging and re-arranging my list because I'm so ocd lol. Anyway . . .-Gattaca-The Curse of the Golden Flower-Dangerous Liaisons (1988 one)-Atonement-Let the right one in-Last Picture Show-The Hills Have eyes (2006 version. My god am I obsessed with the beginning song More and More by Webb Pierce)-K.I.D.S. (one of my all time favorite films)-Eyes Wide Shut (just barely edges out a clockwork orange as my favorite Kubrick film. I haven't seen Barry Lyndon or Lolita or Spartacus yet though).-Oh Brother Where Art Thou (just barely ahead of No Country as my fav Coen bros. film lol)-Frozen River (extremely underappreciated film imo.I'll stop now because I could easily go on and on about movies (and books) lol. But just to throw it out there I don't watch a ton of westerns but I'm starting to get into them a bit more, but Lonesome Dove and Rio Bravo are both excellent.
+Cine Mata Sorry dude I don't know why youtube won't let me write a list. It automatically pushes all my writing into one paragraph. Anyway would love to hear your favorites as well.
***** Hey nice list man. By the way how did you write a list like that? youtube automatically changes mine into a single paragraph
+Cine Mata probably explains why kids is one of your favourite movies being only 16, not saying it's a bad film but by no means a great one
cant believe none of you have No Country For Old Men or THIS movie on your lists lol looking at most of your lists it would seem you actually enjoy the art of movie-making, which is something a lot of people don't pay attention to. you can see the brilliant "artwork" like O' Brother, Where Art Thou(like +kevdawg55 said) or No Country For Old Men by the Coen Brothers, or "artwork" like The Shining(except for the shitty female actress) or A Clockwork Orange, or Paul Thomas Anderson films like this, shot in 35mm for the beauty(The Master also). seems like most directors nowadays go for mainly blood and as much action as they cn stick in a 2-hour slot. its nice to see movies made artfully for a change. and this movie is a great example, its still called one of the most important American films of the 21st century for not only it's great acting and cinematography, but gives us an idea of a Rockefeller or a Carnegie at the turn of the century.
This is a movie that imprints itself on you forever, like a tattoo. I can see how it may not be for everyone, but I was hooked soon as it started. Legendary.
"With these... people."
I'm almost certain Mr. Plainview wanted to call them something else.
I agree. I feel like he couldn't even think of a word that described what he really thought of them, so he just settled with "people"
I actually think that he refers to them as “people” in that tone because he doesn’t really relate to or care for anyone but himself.
I think Day Lewis might have improvised that.
His tone is everything there. I think it shows he thinks of them as almost subhuman, so calling them people amused him. Idk.
@@paulo88gomes23 "little people" would`ve made sense because it`s basically a saying.
Watched about 30 times since 2008, best movie ever.
Why did he randomly kill him at the end. It was so weird I was laughin and screaming wtf why! Did u understand why he did it tell me
DeadMoNeyProductions BP He's been wanting to kill him the entire movie since Eli was an actual threat when it came to competing for power over the people. Eli was so much more powerful than him that he had Daniel kneeling before him and slapping him around in his church in front of everyone and Daniel had to take it. But by the end of the movie Daniel was not only literally drunk but he was drunk with power, he had all the money and success he'd been working for, so when his life-long competitor comes in desperate and begging for help Daniel had the chance to get rid of him since he was finally powerful and rich enough to make it happen and get away with it since Eli clearly didn't have a strong following anymore. Plus Daniel had just disowned his "son" which was the only person he had a chance at a real human connection with during his life (you can see Daniel's "closest associates" disappear out of his life with no mention like they were nothing to him the whole movie) So he didn't have much to lose anymore by giving in to his evil side. That's my very long interpretation of why he killed him.
+carstereobandits thanks for the explanation....still shocked i thought they actually became friends in time. If it had to end in murder i expected eli to be the one to kill daniel
@@supersomebody101 Anderson made it very fricking obvious that Daniel wanted to kill him from the day they met.
@@supersomebody101 I think he saw himself in Eli. Remember In the competition they had between each other Eli beat him. At least that's my take.
One of the best movies made in my lifetime in my opinion. Daniel Day Lewis is great but Paul Dano shines so bright in this film. Ive always been a big fan of him & still dont understand why he isnt as popular as he should be. His performance in this movie is stellar. The church scene has to be his best work. Excellent movie.
Probably because it's hard being in the shadow of Daniel, and Daniel casts a very large shadow. Lewis is one of a kind, and arguably the greatest actor alive today. That's not even subjective at this point.
There's maybe a couple actors who can even hold a candle to Lewis's incredible acting, like heath ledger with the joker. You need not look far for proof of any of this, by simply looking up analysis and breakdown videos on their performances on youtube.
This isn't about liking someone or having favorite actors either. This is objective truths about these actors that make them uncommon amongst uncommon people. from all the improvisations in their work, to the minor details and mannerisms they display. The average person might take what their seeing for granted and not realize it, but these are masterclass works of art from people, and we may not see another of their kind again for another 50-100 years. So.... yeah. Consider that for a second.
well he's the riddler now
This movie was the very essence of the American dream during the industrial revolution. He sacrificed everything. Even his feelings and humanity.

Masterpiece.
i think the movie might not have been great with another actor but Lewis dug so deep for that role. would it have been a master piece without him?
@samuel muiruri No, it would not have been an absolute masterpiece if it weren’t for Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance.
@@samuelmuiruri4704 Every part of a movie contributes to the final product. A great perfomance like this can only be obtained with a well written character and character arc.
True but the way DDL acted was just sick, he did it like his life depended on it.when you see the movie you remember forever, like that scene he asks bandy, 'what sin are you referring to, mr bandy? DDL and deniro just leave me open mouthed with their acting

Think about that line and how he delivers it. Amazing
Travesty that Paul Dano wasn't nominated for an Oscar for his role.
Finally, a trailer that does the movie justice without spoilers.
I have to say, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I only watched it recently. Paul Dano is incredibly underrated.
He's going to be the new riddler, and I'm perfectly fine with that!
A movie about self-hatred that’s very uncomfortable at times. Masterpiece…
Paul Dano is a formidable actor to go against Daniel Day Lewis. This is definitely one of the best movies I've ever watched.
This movie is an American masterpiece. The acting, cinematography, directing, writing and so much more are fantastic. Daniel Day-Lewis is so perfect as Daniel Plainview which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for the role and it’s a deserved Oscar win for Daniel Day-Lewis. It’s amazing how Daniel Day-Lewis created that accent for the character and in real life that’s not his real accent.
I didn't know DDL before. Afterwards, I looked up an interview with him and I almost didn't recognise him. He completely dissolves in the character, and the actual real person is almost invisible. Very, very few actors can do that.
The greatest cinematic masterpiece of the 21st century!!
"There's a whole ocean of oil beneath our feet. No one can get it except for me."
No actor has ever captured arrogance so perfectly. DDL is monumental in this. And I wish I could find a discussion group just for this film, I could talk about it all day.
One of the greatest films ever made; masterpiece.
Perfect movie. The only movie I've ever seen that I would give a 10/10.

I love how this film has such natural colors. It looks like Clint Eastwood's westerns from the 80's or anything from back in the 70's or 80's for that matter. I'm sick of color grading and high contrasted looks that we have these days.
