I'm currently a cosmetology student and I found myself not getting the extra explanation I needed for layers so your video was a great help! Thank you for sharing!!
I’m not a hairstylist, I began cutting my husband’s hair in the first covid lockdown. That’s the extent of my experience. I can here to say that I followed this tutorial on my mothers hair today and it turned out beautiful! Thank you so much for your thorough and step by step direction, you are a fantastic teacher. 🙌🙏
You are brilliant!! I have been a hairdresser for 48 years, still working!! I watch all the hairdressers on "UA-cam" but I always come back to you, you are the best one, in my eyes, you explain everything so well, with a little humor,!! I wish you were here in England, I would make an appointment with you , my daughter is a hairdresser, I must show her this cut, to copy, although, she's a very good cutter, my hair always looks nice when she cuts it, you are an amazing hairdresser!! Xx
I used this video to teach myself to cut 8" off my mom's ludicrously long curly hair (I am an amateur, I was unanimously volunteered as amateur quarantine stylist) and it worked beautifully and saved several people from full on panic attacks! Great quarantine cut if you must
I cut my own hair all the time because I've had bad experience at the salon. ...the worst thing was. I gave a picture to the hair stylist and she still didn't do it right. ....so now I always cut my own hair.if I screwed it up at least it's free.
+Chengfu Saechao I know what you mean, and I followed this video and cut my own hair and it looks just like I want it. I am cutting my own hair from now on. Nobody ever listened to me and I went to lots of different stylists. Thanks for the video. Should we all start a group, I cut my own Hair?
Right! I had this huge fear I was gonna fuck it all up after months and months of patience, but it was the best choice I made. Never went to the barbershop again. (:
I am in LOVE with this hair cut. It's been years since I've done anything but a 2in trim with no layers, but after watching this, I'm ready to chop my hair off for this cut. I love it, it's beautiful, and you made this cut perfect! I'm sending this video to my hair dresser for my appointment tomorrow! ;) Thank you for a great tutorial!
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I am an amateur hairstylist wannabe, I cut my husband’s and son’s hair once in a while but I actually attempted my daughter’s hair this time by following your tutorial. I had just bleached her hair and the ends were quite damaged. Her hair was definitely needing a trim. It turned out pretty darn good if I say so myself!
I have followed your tutorial on two separate occasions in the last several months to cut my own hair and have gotten acceptable results - I'm not afraid to be seen in public afterwards!!! That being said, I think I will add to my bucket list "Get hair cut by Salon Guy!". You explain your craft very well with a lot of details and I'm able to cut my own hair pausing and restarting the video as needed. Sometimes I use two different sessions for one cut... boy, my arms sure get sore! I love your sense of perfection and I'm sure you could probably charge more. I can see how such a perfect cut would grow out nicely and keep its original coiffed look for quite some time. Thank you for the tutorials! Love your sense of humour, your professionalism and your dedication!
Just wanted to let you know in my opinion you are great at being very precise and detailed in explaining and showing your cutting techniques.Thank you!
TheSalonGuy Your welcome. I have been doing hair for 8 years and love that I can continue to learn and grow as a stylist and watching your video proves it is true over and over.So thank you for being such a great inspiration and teacher to me.I have the utmost respect for you and your amazing talent! Ciao
Thank you! This tutorial helped me give my boyfriend (with medium length hair) a haircut during covid. It has been bugging him for about 6 months. I think it turned out really well and he is pleased! This is the best tutorial that I have seen in terms of explaining concepts and angles of layering. Well done, sir, and thank you again.
I am an expat living in Thailand. My wife couldn't find a stylist here to giver her a satisfactory haircut. She asked me to watch this video and asked me if I could do it. I watched the video through a few times, took notes, and did it. It turned out pretty much like your example. Thank you. You are an excellent teacher.
I've been spoiled because my dad is a hairdresser, and a great one! But now we live far away and I refuse to go to salons to be partly satisfied. But DUDE, followed this video down to the frames and I LOVE the end result!
@@vvega3874 mirrors don’t work for me, they confuse me, I end up going by touch.... worry about cutting self, so have to get the hang of it, hoping that like braiding, you eventually get your muscle memory and can get it done.... not there yet, but my sides will be more even now with these instructions
I gave my daughter this haircut exactly as you explained and it came out PERFECT,FLAWLESS,BEAUTIFUL,she was so happy to see all the ugly splitends gone that i suddenly became her hairstylist...LOL......THANKS TO THIS AMAZING TEACHER!!!!
I've followed it too, and I have now become my wife's hairdresser. I'm about to cut her hair for the fourtht time. Luckily she hasn't asked for a different style. Yet... 😅
THANK YOU TheSalonGuy, from a guy who's never cut hair, but loves his wife and is on lockdown. She's happy (so I'm happy), you're a considerable instructor. Cheers!
Thank you Salon Guy for your tutorial on how to cut medium layers in your hair! I am home styling and followed your instructions and my hair looks like I had it professionally cut. You are an excellent teacher of hair styles! Keep up the excellent work.
This is what I'm talking about! Perfect haircut! This is why it is important to have a professional and dedicated stylist, wish I could live close to you (I am in texas), I would drive as many miles just to get my hair done by you, Congratulations!
I love the way you showed the whole haircut as i am dyslexia and i find when you show the whole haircuts being done its helping me learn how to do the hair properly . From all angles so i thank you very very much x.
I wish I came across this vid before going to a stylist I had never been to. I asked for deep layers instead I got a frizzy, thinned out mess. I wish you lived in Hoston, TX. I would have you cut my hair in a heartbeat.
I have to say you are definitely the best at tutorials period because you explain everything you did so well. I have learned more from you then anyone else out there. I’ve been a stylist for 18 years and I am still learning and I appreciate you so much. -Brad-
This is exactly how I cut my hair for many years now thank you for the in-depth tutorial. I did learn a few new tips that I know will work well and make my hair even bouncier. I totally agree it’s the perfect haircut due to how it grows out and the evenness and like you said you can flip from side to side. Thanks again love your channel!
Thanks. You really locked it in when you said to let the hair speak to you. As a newby, i want to neaten up my six year old's hair but need some guidance like you offer here. You did this in Twenty minutes, so i better prepare to devote at least three times that amount of time into the project. But i am now confident that after an hour's work, i won't end up regretting it.
Im not a stylist, however....I have been a broke student during nursing school and I needed to learn to cut my own hair. I always watched intently when I could afford one, so when I tried it...IT WORKED! And...this IS the perfect haircut and exactly how I cut it !. So, thanks for confirming both! I did subscribe to find out what else I can learn! Great tutorial ! :)
i dont usually leave comments, but omg.... this is seriously the best tutorial. i watched this a second time while cutting my own hair, and it is the best haircut ive given myself! (not as awesome as the one done in the video of course) . Cant wait to try this on my daughter! Thank you!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! I've been trying to describe to my stylist what I want and my hair vocabulary and hers weren't matching up. Now I have something to show her so I can't thank you enough for your demonstration and giving me the confidence to explain and show her!!
I have watched a ton of these type of videos. Yours is wonderful. I can understand what you are communicating more than any other I have watched. Thank you for taking the time to add the fine detail of great communication. ♡
I love that you reply to everyone, i wouldnt give the jerks the time of day but thats me. Ive never made a tutorial video so i wont judge any imperfections but you do explain it well enough. Ty
Wow! Clear explanation and best hair cutting video I've watched thus far. Plus, Salon Guy, you are a true artist and one can see you care about your clients and craft. Many thanks.
I guess so Nancy!! I've been thinking the same (see one of my comments above). By showing a hairdresser this video, you are more or less suggesting they can't do a layered cut properly, and need to be shown....hmmm...may not go down well at all.
I’m a hairdresser but I just graduated in 2017 so I still consider myself a newbie & have many things to improve specially in haircuts. This is beautiful. This is the haircut my mom wants, I’ll make sure to follow this and get this done on my mom.
This is so cool! I have layers and it's so awesome to know what the hair stylist actually did to my hair. Hair styling is a real art, this tutorial is much appreciated :)
I've watched lots of your haircut tutorial and lots of others , yours are so clear and easier to understand . very much appreciate that . Some do haircuts well but do not know how to teach .
I started watching your haircut tutorial videos about 2-3 years ago and have been cutting my own hair. Thank you so much for sharing. I greatly appreciated it!
hu saloonguy you r da best now im doing hairdressing course after watching u please dnt stop commentry as a ordinary person can understand u hats off ton u
I just wish the camera person had positioned him or herself in such a way that the stylist's arm wasn't blocking our view of the actual cuts in so many shots!!

Brilliant video! I used this tutorial to give my wife a layered cut and she loved the cut. And I'm a guy who doesn't know how to use a comb. Easy to follow and very logical.
Decent video, I imagine it's geared towards students. I suggest explaining what type of layering you're using and why, as well as elevations and over-directions, and using more professional lingo (i.e. It's the fringe, not "front" or "bangs," etc) it's one thing to describe what you're doing, but more effective to instill knowledge of why you're doing what you're doing. Anybody can copy a haircut, but to know why we do (or don't do) certain things is what distinguishes good from great.
It’s funny you suggest that because I thought the opposite when I watched this. I appreciated that he did not use any confusing verbiage - it was very direct and I knew exactly what he meant when he said it without needing to google what anything meant. Seeing as I have no intention of doing hair as a profession, but really wanted a detailed video of how to do hair for myself, this was better suited for someone like me.
Thank you for posting this! Every time I explain this to any stylist they never understand and they continue to blame me as if I don't know what I'm talking about. I just cut my own hair and I love how it looks (I've also received so many compliments). Thank you so much for posting this!
I've been cuttin my own hair for years, only because I can't find a professional who does layering correctly. the last professional ended up giving me a mullet 😱😂. I love your video! It explains AND shows what I need. I'm in desperate need of a new cut and have new scissors! Off to try his out! Thanks so much!
Thank you for this tutorial! I have learned a different techinque in terms of layering here in Korea but it's similar in a way that we don't cut too much on the sides. And we start at 90 degrees on the back. I'll study this technique as well. I like that I can determine the length of the shortest layer right at the beginning.
Just gained a new subbie! Thank you so much for sharing your talent. I don't trust anyone to trim my daughter's hair and this video is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for not making it too complicated. You are a jem!!!!
Section off the front side (above occipital or smthn) and then take the back side starting from middle. Like middle back. Then, pull it to a guide length, (eg armpit length /shoulder length/neckline/below chin. Doesnt work for shorter than chin length, super hard, get someone else to do it.) you will need steady hands to maintain the angle of both hair and scissors, also maintain the hair traction. If you want straight cut, pull down and scissors horizontal 90°. If want some layers pull it away from your face and scissors 90° vertical or 45°. (you can pull hair either upwards or sideways, find a way you can maibtain the same traction pull or you will mess it up) When cutting always pull thin section of hair like ½ an inch or so. When you start to get tired and started to pull thick sections, stop and go rest. Or you will mess it up. Usually i will always mess up near the ears because i will want to rest my head, start to not see bcs my glasses on ymthe way or greedily want to pull the hair further.
I usually part my hair down the middle, and bring each half over my shoulder to cut the initial length. I cut, then comb the hair back and use a second mirror to see if the shortest piece looks about the right length from behind. Then I work on getting it evened out from the rear view. I have to use two mirrors to see where to cut. I find a spot that needs to be cut, grip it tightly just above where I need to cut, put down the hand mirror, and turn to the big mirror to pull that spot over my shoulder to cut it. Sometimes I am able to hold the hair with the comb long enough to turn around and cut. I don't try to cut with my hands behind my back for fear that I will either cut myself or cut too much hair. I guess it depends on how long your hair is though.
I use a ponytail method and a 0.25 inch clipper guard. I comb everything nice and flat and tight. Then I drag the ponytail holder down remembering I will havea quarter of an inch beyond the ponytail holder. It does get a little longer in the front, but it is easier to trim with a scissors if you want it straight instead of angled. I have also tried a Creaclip a couple of times. It has a slight curve so you didn't have the angle in the front. I have a family member make sure it is level, then I hold it tight and clipper cut it against the clip.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video. Walking me through the step by step process was incredibly helpful. I've watched a few videos but this is by far the most in depth and well explained I've seen. Thanks again and keep up the good work:)
You really are awesome. I really appreciate your work. The only thing that may have helped me is if the back ground was lighter we could get crisper images. Thanks so much!
ive watched so many of these,by far, this is the BEST! you are the only one that gave layers, the other videos, they just look choppy! you are a true " ARTIST!! " thank you so much for showing this! have a blessed day honey! xo
I used this video to cut my hair last night and it came out perfect! I couldn't believe it! I had to contort my hands a little, but it worked great! Thank you for sharing this. It's close to the best cut I've ever had!!
Thank you for explaining so well! I did this haircut on my daughter and it is so beautiful. I learned so much from your tutorials that I cut my whole familie now with confidence 😀
This cut still rocks, it's the cut I give my wife and she still loves it. I have dont some small modifications for her hair, but this is a solid base for anyone
i cut hair the exact same way for layered hair cuts and no one has ever been able to do it for me ... i cut my own hair for years and now im just wishing i can get it done at a salon that way because of my hands .. every time i have gone to a salon in the past ive had to come home and fix it ugh.. i love your videos keep em coming. love it
Gorgeous! It will fit my face shape and will conceal my real age (49) because medium length layers haircut is the best preferably for women in their 40's. Love it. Thanks for the video. Hope to see more in the future. :)
56 years old, in confinement with my wife. Watched your tutorial a couples of times, got the scissors, and a comb, and cut her hair. What you teach makes sense, you should have been a teacher. The wife still talks to me, the hairdo will do the trick until the hairstylist can erase my mistakes :) Thanks lol
Lori I know, twice I asked my stylist for long layers, and didn't get what I wanted. Last year I did a DIY haircut with layers and someone asked who did my hair because they loved the cut!
Dyl Brody yes!! I asked for this exact cut! After reviewing this video, I learned that my stylist was giving me an extreme layered cut and did not blend over all. This video has given me the vocabulary to express exactly what and how I’d like my hair cut! Just hope stylist doesn’t feel insulted for saying so!? Should I show this video to my stylist???
I went to cheap salon nearby yrs ago ( it wasnt rlly rlly cheap but likeeee i didnt go to a salon for the past 2 yrs after that ) and they did this layer rlly well!! I hope u find a better stylist ♡
I'm a freelance stylist and love looking up different techniques and this is really fantastic, really easy to understand to for students and ppl wanting to start in the industry, a lot better tutorial then college lol!!!
Stephen, You are awesome!!!! this is one of the best and easier Haircuts on a medium length hair I have ever seen done, I mean seriously.... You rock!!!
Omg... Perfect haircut is an understatement! Thank goodness I have a stylist who cuts my hair exactly like this! I get compliments everywhere and everyone wants to know who does my hair! I'm so lucky! ✨ Again! Amazing work! You're so talented! Subscribed! All the best!
If i go to your salon, any of your staff can do this perfect haircut?!:) this is my dream haircut! Thanks! Btw, how generous of u to share this for free!
When I go to the hairdresser they never take the time or give the expertise like you.....sending always a wish to the Universe to bring me a good stylist like yourself

I just want you to know that I really appreciate the video you made. The way you explain is very clear and helpful. Thank you.
When you have to cut your own hair during quarantine 😔😂
yep
Salt Pepper helo im with u
You Tube Haircut Tutorials. Thank goodness.
Followed this for my lockdown hair and left it curly.
Fantastic video! This guy knows what he's doing and he talks you through it. This is the tutorial you're looking for.
WOW this is the perfect style.....if I went into my hairdressers for a cut like this, what would I ask for?
Brilliant video! I used this tutorial to give my wife a layered cut and she loved the cut. And I'm a guy who doesn't know how to use a comb. Easy to follow and very logical.
Awesome
MAHALO!! Stephen
Guess what? I cut my own hair watching your tutorial.
And I actually did a pretty good job!! I love it!
Aloha!!
Awesome to hear! Good job!
I've just cut my own hair and I'm extremely pleased with the result. Thank you so much! Greetings from Germany and all the best!
Danke!!!
Anybody can copy a haircut, but to know why we do (or don't do) certain things is what distinguishes good from great.
good feedback
It’s funny you suggest that because I thought the opposite when I watched this. I appreciated that he did not use any confusing verbiage - it was very direct and I knew exactly what he meant when he said it without needing to google what anything meant. Seeing as I have no intention of doing hair as a profession, but really wanted a detailed video of how to do hair for myself, this was better suited for someone like me.
Chris Denyer the salon guy is the best on UA-cam.
Thank you for posting this! Every time I explain this to any stylist they never understand and they continue to blame me as if I don't know what I'm talking about. I just cut my own hair and I love how it looks (I've also received so many compliments). Thank you so much for posting this!
+Lehi Naseem aw no prob
Great video, easy to understand! AND, my hubby gave me a super haircut!
I am a hairdresser student and this explained it so much better than my instructors!!! Thanks @TheSalonGuy
Thxx
Steven Im a big big fan of you... I learn a lot by watching you...
Thanksss
Question for anyone who cut their own hair using this video: how did you do the back? I can’t seem to cut the back of my hair, even with a mirror.
I have the same question but have seen some demonstrate on themselves by parting down back & bringing forward on shoulders
Section off the front side (above occipital or smthn) and then take the back side starting from middle. Like middle back. Then, pull it to a guide length, (eg armpit length /shoulder length/neckline/below chin. Doesnt work for shorter than chin length, super hard, get someone else to do it.)
you will need steady hands to maintain the angle of both hair and scissors, also maintain the hair traction. If you want straight cut, pull down and scissors horizontal 90°. If want some layers pull it away from your face and scissors 90° vertical or 45°. (you can pull hair either upwards or sideways, find a way you can maibtain the same traction pull or you will mess it up)
When cutting always pull thin section of hair like ½ an inch or so.
I use several mirrors and check the evenness after by bringing it forward and taking a picture from behind with a timer
Great job. I have thin medium hair and falling so much. I think I will go for this haircut. Beautifully done.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video. Walking me through the step by step process was incredibly helpful. I've watched a few videos but this is by far the most in depth and well explained I've seen. Thanks again and keep up the good work:)
Are you still alive 😢😢 its year 2023 which is about to end in 8 days
Perfect haircut for most of my female clients. Thanks a bunch!
You really are awesome. I really appreciate your work. The only thing that may have helped me is if the back ground was lighter we could get crisper images. Thanks so much!

Beautiful haircut..Thank You for your guidance! I'm gonna try to emulate it on someone!
Yaaaay
i cut hair the exact same way for layered hair cuts and no one has ever been able to do it for me ... i cut my own hair for years and now im just wishing i can get it done at a salon that way because of my hands .. every time i have gone to a salon in the past ive had to come home and fix it ugh.. i love your videos keep em coming. love it
Is it just me or does the mannequin look happier after the hair cut?
😄
Fan Person you're right ! 😜
Yes, yes she does...
:D
Fan Person 🤣🤣🤣
Lmao
Gorgeous! It will fit my face shape and will conceal my real age (49) because medium length layers haircut is the best preferably for women in their 40's. Love it. Thanks for the video. Hope to see more in the future. :)
Love this haircut. Just what I have been looking for!!
Now if my stylist could only get it right.
Lori
Lori I know, twice I asked my stylist for long layers, and didn't get what I wanted. Last year I did a DIY haircut with layers and someone asked who did my hair because they loved the cut!
Yeah I'm also thinking the same eh lol
I'm a freelance stylist and love looking up different techniques and this is really fantastic, really easy to understand to for students and ppl wanting to start in the industry, a lot better tutorial then college lol!!!

this is exactly what i want! no doubt the perfect haircut :) thanks for sharing this!

Stephen, You are awesome!!!! this is one of the best and easier Haircuts on a medium length hair I have ever seen done, I mean seriously.... You rock!!!
I can literally feel those comb scrapes on the mannequins head x|
god
Omg... Perfect haircut is an understatement! Thank goodness I have a stylist who cuts my hair exactly like this! I get compliments everywhere and everyone wants to know who does my hair! I'm so lucky! ✨

She seems happy with the result! Haha
Thank you so much. You really good in teaching. I never fully got it on how to perfectly layered hair until watching your video.
This reminds me a bit of Jennifer Aniston’s hair in Friends!
