I am a Singaporean and Singapore is a land scarce country. It is sad to see these nostagic areas disappearing. Thanks for visiting and appreciating them. Been following your channel for a while!
Thanks Ghibli for opening up this SIngapore citizen's eyes. I didn't even know these places existed. The English subtitles for the Japanese commentary really enhanced the viewer's enjoyment of your videos. Keep up the good work. Hope to catch you on one of walkabout adventures someday.
The Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall is a really important piece of history, it was the base of the Tongmenghui in Southeast Asia and it was where several of the uprisings of the Xinhai Revolution were planned.
Glad you visited Balestier. When I was a child, my parents used to bring me to this spectacle shop. And buy coffee powder from the shop beside it. Balestier is named after America's first consul to Singapore. Balestier used to have a lot of sugarcane and rattan plantations. You can also find other heritage sites like the Balestier market and the Tua Pek Kong temple. Balestier used to have the old Shaw cinema and Rex theatre. I spent many a childhood days there. Do you know that one side of Balestier road has many side streets with Burmese names (Pegu Road, Irrawady Road etc), while the other side are malay names (Jalan Dusun, Jalan Raja Udang) referring to birds and flowers such as Orchard and Deep blue kingfisher? You should also visit the nearby Whampoa Drive, barely 300 metres away. It has the traditional bakery (Sin Hon Leong), the VERY famous whampoa drive market and food centre(s) - yes two of them, and the whampoa dragon fountain. And lastly, I believe the original Loy Kee stall is at whampoa drive food centre, NOT the aircon place you visited.
HDB Hub has a showroom which feature mock ups of 2 to 5 room flats (new). You can show your overseas audiences how our flats look like. The showroom can be accessed from the 2nd or 3rd floor. it is in another building, and you can cross over using a bridge.
I live around there. You should go down to Kodak film shop down the road. One of the shops that still develope films and if you go behind the shop houses there's a very old Bread shop that make the bread for Yakun. Further down you will reach Whampoa Hawker Centre. There's also an old Temple around that area. That temple has one of the best durian stall there. On the other end you will find the famous old Tau Sar Piah shop and there's another shop that is good for Chicken pie.
so happy you discovered this Ghib! I've been getting my glasses with the 2 sisters and their service is just incredible. Authentic retro frames from AO and the likes! What a gem this place is :) Thank you!
This is so precious, thank you for making these videos! I was worried for a moment when you were eating the chicken rice without the black soy sauce. Good that the next second you reached for it. You're basically like a local already LOL. And oh, you have to try some traditional food and desserts in SG too! There's a 75 Ah Balling Peanut Soup dessert stall that sells glutinous rice balls at Golden Mile Food Centre. They have more than 70 years of history in Sg.
I really enjoy your videos! You should make it into a series! Where u explore all hidden spots in SG with rich history but at the same time do take care of yourself during this covid-19 period.
It's interesting to note that many of the roads around Balestier are named after places and rivers in Burma. Examples include Moulmein Road, Irrawady Road, Rangoon Road and Mandalay Road, just to name four. It's perhaps unsurprising then to find yourself wandering into the compound of a large Burmese temple. All these could suggest some historical links to the Burmese community here.
@Ghib Ojisan Wah! I live at the Balestier Road, could intro you to really good food around the area. Try Founder Bak Kut Teh, Whampoa Market, Dragon Fountain, etc.
Wow I have stayed in balestier forever and I did not know the history about the spectacle and coffee shop. Will definitely pop by. Thanks for educating and sharing!
My husband was just asking me earlier what I was going to watch on my phone while lounging, I replied “I’m gonna watch Huat-ah-jippun-lang-lai-liao” and then Ghibさん skipped that part 😅😂🤣 あかんかったやん〜
I enjoyed watching this video very much and I hope you make more of such videos showing little known sites in Singapore - even for Singaporeans! It’s a great idea to team up with the heritage board to showcase Singapore’s heritage - keep it up and we will keep watching!
I'm foreigner working in Singapore for 12 years and I'm so embarrassed that Ghib San knows so much more than me while Ghib San is only there not even 2 years.. I'm Indonesian Chinese and my grand father was from Hainan Island China. I'll definitely bring my Father to try the Hainan chicken rice in this video 💜
The Burmese Buddhist Temple is an interesting landmark of a small lesser-known migrant group in Singapore. Always interesting to see cultural sites of lesser known minorities in Singapore, just goes to show how diverse the country is. The only temple is the only one of its kind outside of Myanmar and the giant marble Buddha is the largest of its kind outside of Myanmar.
So cool. You featured the charming Balestier district. Maybe you can consider a part 2. There are still many interesting sights like the Guan yin temple, tau sar piah shop and the free chinese tea cart.
Main reason for me to go balestier is the stretch of road have alot of traditional bak ku teh stalls. Go in the evening and it is another sight to behold.
Oh Singapore still have old shop houses !!! When I was on the trip in Penang few years ago, I saw many Singaporean tourist walked on the Old street . They said they miss old colonial town so came to Malaysia and yearn .. So I misuderstood Singapore already crushed all of them.

Wow this video is full of insight into Singapore's hertiage as alot of it has been lost with the modernisation of the country.
