It gives me goosebumps to watch the man who had the courage to play John Merrick... You have to be a real man and a real actor to play a character like that one... Sigh, I could listen to Hurt reading from a phonebook. I don't know what it is but I love the sound of his voice. It has an almost musical quality to it.
But statistics show that capital punishment doesn't deter crime. When the state kills a murderer, they have committed the same crime as the murderer. Doing it by way of committee, pen, paper, and needle changes nothing. Calling it "justice" doesn't change the fact that it's vengeance. Punishment is barbarism. I prefer enlightenment - even for those who have wronged me.

For nearly half a century now I've made my living as an actor. In this role, I participated in the telling of many stories. They were set in many different cultures and involved people from all races, religions and political beliefs.
But today, I want to tell you some different stories. Stories that contain some bleak and unacceptable statistics. Facts that affect us all in the world we live in. One in three women are beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused throughout the world. Look around you. One in three women.
Every year eight million small arms and 16 billion units of ammunition are produced. More than two new bullets for every human on the planet; enough to kill us all twice over. 20,000 people worldwide are on death row, beheading, electrocution, hanging, lethal injection, shooting and stoning are still government-sanctioned forms of execution. And we claim to be civilized.
Torture is commonplace. Refugees suffer unnecessarily. Companies sacrifice human health and even life for profit. But this isn't a movie script. These stories are real. This is the world in which we live and these are the lives of our fellow human beings. But we don't have to accept it.
Amnesty International is a movement of ordinary people from across the world. We stand up to humanity and human rights wherever truth justice and freedom is denied. Human rights are ours by birth. Ther can not be given or taken away by any individual organization or court. They are inalienable. They belong to all of us.
Protect the human is our call to action. It shows we celebrate our shared humanity and have the determination. to protect it. This is our story and we are all players. By the year 2010, we want 1 million people in the UK to stand up for humanity and human rights.
Be one of them.

Now John, when we speak of human rights... have you the courage to face the fact that the OIC said that they can not abide by the Universal Declaration of Human rights because it would go against Islamic law? Have you seen their Cairo Declaration? They intend for it to apply to you and everyone else so look into it.
If we really want to defend human rights, we can't be so politically correct in how we address the worst perpetrators of crimes against them.

We need to prevent repeat offenders from hurting people again. there needs to be considered and laborious debate about Justice as we move the slider of crime and punishment. But if we can't manage to do that, then lets focus of protecting the victim first, and the criminal second.

It is definitely sad and disheartening to read most of these comments which are more concerned with the sexuality of one of the greatest actors of our time rather than what he is talking about. How sad. These comments perpetuate what John is calling our attention to.This video is so necessary and these comments are a proof of its value and immediacy.
