John Hurt Meets With His Brother - Who Do You Think You Are?

  • John visits his brother, Michael, who has a photograph of Emma Stafford, and reveals that she was a Ward in Chancery - a means by which wealthy fathers commonly provided for illegitimate children. Emma later married Walter Lord Browne, who built Westport House School in Grimsby.
From the moment John Hurt first set foot in Ireland, he felt a strong affinity to it - he felt that it was his home. Equipped with a family tale that his great grandmother, Emma Stafford, was the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Sligo, John sets out on the trail of his Irish roots - and to see if this story is true.

I was a valet at a famous Beverly Hills restaurant in the late 90s. As I returned the car to his lunch guest, his guest went inside to use the restroom. We engaged in small talk and he asked how long I worked there. I said it was my last day. I graduated college a week before and my first real engineering job was starting the following Monday. He shook my hand and congratulated me. Then he asked if it was something I loved to do. I said 'yes' then he said, 'Right, then we're both lucky to find work in what we love.' In that English manner. RIP Mr Hurt.

I'm from Belfast my wife is from Edinburgh. 12 years ago we were driving through Galway heading to Salt Hill, stopping at the traffic lights I saw and said to my wife, look there's John hurt! She said where? I replied, there at the lights! She again asked where? I again replied, crossing the road, she again replied where! After John had crossed the road I asked my wife. Do you know who John Hurt is? She replied no!

Ever since I saw his Caligula in I, Claudius I knew anything with John Hurt in it was worth checking out. Some (like the awful Partners) were only watchable because of his performance. Others were transcendent thanks to him.
His father was a Church of England Vicar and his brother a Catholic monk. I don't consider that "following his father into the church". There must have been some very interesting discussions when that happened.

So many talk shows say that's a way to do it( bring you back to your sense of self, by reminding you your history personally connects to before you were born, and comes right up into the moment to where you are now( while still letting one think for themselves what it all means in their own way).

Amongst countless other achievements, the guy made out with a space crab, and gave birth to another cinematic legend, the Alien.

Great actor. I think his best movie was as a bad CIA operative with Dennis Hopper in the Osterman Weekend. Intense movie with Hopper also at his best.

Interesting. I’ve been to Glenstal Abby on retreat. There is a boys school there and the monks have a nice guesthouse at the Abby for visitors. They follow the rules of Benedict. There are many things to do in the area and the grounds are beautiful. John Hurst appears to have a great relationship with his brother. The monks are very interesting men and spiritual men.

John Hurt was incredible in Alien and then years later turn into the doctor of course he was right for the doctor
I imagine he always wanted to play a role like the doctor and I guess he may have enjoyed the role?
I also seem to think he might of appeared in a classic episode of Doctor Who number one the first Doctor before he became famous? I think him as the War Doctor was brilliant as a secret doctor a missing story of the Time War but hopefully there's a where to fill that in as a storybook? SIR John Hurt R. I. P best Doctor ever
