I'm a guitarist and what I perceive is Mike Portnoy is the metal equivalent of a jazz drummer. No matter how much technical stuffs he plays - they don't lose musicality. I think that separates him from the rest 99% of drummers now a days.

Octavarium is a brilliant album, for me the last which I really liked. And this Muse vibe is kinda amazing as well. I appreciate Mangini as he is a phenomenal drummer as well, but DT is Portnoy for me. Looking forward do to hear new Pertuci's album with Mike behind the drums :)

One of the few good things about lockdown is I can revisit everything I loved years ago, and watching this reaffirms why we all love MP like no other. Trickiest part of the song is that switch between 6/8 and 4/4 at furious pace...it's one of the things I miss about DT, the songs were brutally difficult but still playable, and flowed, and had an energy.
Portnoy's the shit he just has made the most amazing career by breaking away from D T and forming so many Bands he's probably one of the smartest Drummers ever knowing his life span as A Drummer is Limited i'm happy to see a drummer use his brain .His Library of music always learn and as an artist expaic will feed him and his family for life the only good man i a man children bore me grow have faith in your aptitude and grow . 100%! Portnoy created the sound. Mancini is superb but it's like he's working out a maths equation. Portnoy just flows and looks so natural. All the odd time signatures are made to look normal. What a drummer

When my son was just a wee lad I used to take him to Guitar Center to look at the kits, He was maybe 12 or so. He would get behind a kit and play maybe the 1st 30 sec of this song and blow everyone away!
I've never used Sabian cymbals, I have always used Zildjian and Meinl, but I really like that ride cymbal he has. It has a very clear and bright sound.
