    Portnoy really designs drum set compositions that are memorable and stylistic. His drumming is supportive, melodic, and effective. His real gift is his ears beyond anything else.

      Absolutely! I'm totally agree with all of your answers guys. I mean, Mangini may not be bad, but he's trying to portray a Rock image that he doesn't have. Every time I see him on video I think 'ok, alright, you're good, but... Why so robotic? Where's the soul? The attitude?'

  • @ahnafsakib

    I'm a guitarist and what I perceive is Mike Portnoy is the metal equivalent of a jazz drummer. No matter how much technical stuffs he plays - they don't lose musicality. I think that separates him from the rest 99% of drummers now a days.

    • @natethegreat8533
      @natethegreat8533 Рік тому +3

      lol No. He’s an outstanding percussionist plain and simple. nothing “jazzy” about his playing AT ALL

    • @Serfo_
      @Serfo_ Рік тому +12

      @@natethegreat8533 Probably you didn't get the analogy, he's not saying Portnoy is "jazzy", but compared to his metal peers, he seems a lot more musical (metal drummers tend to be just a mix of strenght, stamina and velocity; but they lose some points in some other areas because of that).

      Well, you don't listen to lots of drummers then.
      Don't get me wrong, I like Portnoy too. But comparing him with the rest 99% of drummers is too much. 99% is a big number man, you should try to listen to more drummers

Octavarium is a brilliant album, for me the last which I really liked. And this Muse vibe is kinda amazing as well. someone needs to make a video:
    Kubrick's 2001 opening scene, the pre-man raises the bone to strike, and as he slams it down
    SLAM into Portnoy playing something

    When my son was just a wee lad I used to take him to Guitar Center to look at the kits, He was maybe 12 or so. He would get behind a kit and play maybe the 1st 30 sec of this song and blow everyone away!

    I've never used Sabian cymbals, I have always used Zildjian and Meinl, but I really like that ride cymbal he has. It has a very clear and bright sound.
