Well... this needs to be put in it´s context. DT did a couple of "extras" spicing up some live performances by playing a couple of records that had inspired them in the early years. They played pink floyds "dark side of the moon", metallicas "master of puppets" and Iron Maidens "the number of the beast", perhaps some other, don't remember. But anyway, it´s not like they clame to do it better than the originals. It´s just a kind of tribute. LaBire is even wearing a metallica t-shirt. It´s a tribute and a fun thing, not meant to be compared to the original. It´s just musicinas having fun. For me, DT is much more interesting than metallica, but that´s just preferences. Comparing metal bands, guitarists and so on is what in the end truly will kill rock n' roll. Just listen, bang your head if you like it, or move on.
That's exactly what I was about to comment, It's not a matter of comparison between both bands, alternate picking versus stroke picking, individual skills or Labrie vs Hetfield. It's all about the respect DT guys have for Metallica, I am a huge fan of both since they match some of my favorite musical flavours: the complexity of time signature changes with classical and clean notes style from DT, and the heaviness and melodical sense from Metallica...
Fernando Alastor the 15 means 15 years in jail for committing the crime of not down picking the song lol. nah he's a good guitar player, but very few people can down pick at the speed of Hetfield for that long without messing up.
To me, this was a really great cover. I loved how Petrucci nailed it although he did play it wrong cuz he was using alternate picking. LaBrie was his best though, you gotta give it to the guy

Labrie is not at all good, but has already become trademark vocalist for DT. And, can sing well those slower melodic things quite satisfactorily. Though, very unsuitable for metal of Metallica type.
For those unfamiliar with Dream Theater, find Dance of Eternity. It showcases these musicians vast talent, and why playing this song is probably easy for them. But they'll never have the violence and energy of Metallica, which counts for a lot live.

Kirk is one f my all time favourite guitar players, I actually started guitar because of him and the first solo I learned ever was from Fade to Black...He still sucks on vibrato and his note choices on occasions are completely off harmonically wise. Personally, I love Kirk's solos, but anyone with some knowledge of Petrucci can tell you that his solos suit the songs DT write a lot. You're just guessing that because you assume that just because hes a prog guitarist that he tries to write solos that sound otherworldly and alien but he writes some seriously melodic solos that are full of feel, that also have that bit of shred in them. Anyone worth their pinch of salt knows that. And by the way, I'm playing guitar 7 months and can down pick Master of Puppets. People claim Petrucci can’t downpick the riff. From what I see he definitely has the speed to do it, I just don’t think he was too worried about semantics such as downpicking a certain riff. It’s more efficient and makes more sense to alternate pick some parts.

The alternate picking really takes the bite out of it. Just goes to show we all have different strengths, even a player of JP's calibre has some weaknesses
I love Metallica, I only like one song by DT. This is an excellent cover, the voice is perfect for this song. The gravelly effect in his voice is good for master of puppets. The studio version of master of puppets sounds quite similar

My point exactly. It's all about technique. My technique makes me sound exactly the same whether I'm picking down or up, and especially if I'm playing something with a lot of distortion. I've always been picking up and down for certain stuff, and therefore my technique (which in general isn't very good) makes me sound pretty even.

No. It depends on how you play it. The reason it sounds like that it's because they're having to use extra force to get those downstrums to the next string in time. You can make alternate sound the same by just adding more force and that's it. Still easier to play than all downstrokes, and it can sound the same.

It's only an important difference for guitarists who have grown up playing it downpicked, because when you downpick aggressively a lot then naturally your downstroke is going to end up being stronger than your upstroke, as it is for The Het, but if you train in other genres/styles before (as everybody in DT certainly has, having all gone to music college) then you can develop equally powerful downstrokes and upstrokes, as JP has here. His picking is very even and very strong in both directions.

I was there. 1st ever DT show. So much fun. On that tour, they played a full cover album whenever they played 2 nights in a city on the 2nd night. But they never said which album itd be til it happened. We were so frickin stoked when we saw the puppets backdrop like no fkin way. We actually had a bit of a mosh pit going at a DT show 😆 it was awesome. I wanna see the full show
I was there too! At the Vic right? I was with a friend at the front of the elevated section halfway back on the left. It was awesome, not at the front but still an unobstructed view. Though I do remember hearing that it would be Puppets in advance? Maybe it was last minute and rumored, or a few days earlier? I think they had also done it in Europe somewhere.

Scott Karrasch Yea cliff burton generally is held high among the metal community. And Portnoy's drumming has been praised for a while. I get your point though, generally the guitarist is given more/unearned respect.
Right. Well that's why I'm a little miffed because as a drummer, I always listen for the drum parts in a band. If the drummer only plays a standard 4/4 "boom, ts, pa, ts" throughout the song, I tend to get bored with it more easily. Following Mike Portnoy around after he left Dream Theater is actually how I got into Flying Colors, Transatlantic, and Neal Morse's projects. I'm not huge on bass but I do agree that they are as important as any other instrument. I never really felt the bass was ever to prominent in metallica songs though. Maybe it was just the mix but I never heard it too often, (except on Orion. That was Cliff Burton wasn't it? Okay that was really awesome). But Like Myung's bass parts in Dream Theater are outstanding and I always tend to listen more for Geddy's bass in Rush than Alex's guitar. The guy from Yes has some pretty good bass parts too. Just look at Tempus Frigit. Sorry this reply got a little long, music is really a big deal for me.
When Petrucci cuts his hair, his power grows exponentially. As a fan and pal, I would not have let James try to sing this until much later in his vocal rehab.
Imo, personally and all that... I rate bands on 2 criteria.. 1: musical talent & 2: song writing talent/ structure. Dream theater 1: 10 2: 10. Metallica 1:82:9 Both legendary status. Remember... DT are the best of the best so anything close is a win!!!
Metallica basically helped set the tone for metal music in the early 80's and Dream Theater recognizes that. The really, really respect what Metallica has done. I mean, why else would they want to cover the Master of Puppets album in its entirety? Metallica may not be as technically skilled as the individual members of Dream Theater, but they still did amazing work with music. In my own opinion, I think Metallica might sound a lot like DT if Cliff hadn't died because of his musical influence.
@PietroRumenta Actually mistakes must be separated in 2 categories... 1st, mistakes that are made from fail play and 2nd memory mistakes.. so Petrucci just makes a memory mistake that shows us that he didn't remember that part not that he couldn't play it... btw its the easiest part of M. every single member of dream theater is Technicaly very higher from those of metallica..still if you asked me which band would i choose to listen play master of puppets or any metallica song that would be metallica for sure
Maybe if your upstrokes and downstrokes are very different to begin with. I don't play that much guitar myself, and certainly no Metallica songs, but I really don't hear a difference between up and downstrokes when I play unless we're talking chords obviously. With other instruments doing their thing as well up/downstrokes don't matter much even if you're sloppy.
Say what you want about Dream Theater being more technically demanding but Metallica wins at writing catchier riffs and just generally more interesting songs in my opinion. Not bashing Dream Theatre in any way but I'd rather have the songwriting ability of 80s Metallica than DT. I will admit though Metallica has released some trash too.

He's not better at rhythm than James but you cant discredit him for it like James is the best rhythm metal player ever no debate so. And you say Kirk writes better solos to suit the song. Personally, I love Kirk's solos, but anyone with some knowledge of Petrucci can tell you that his solos suit the songs DT write a lot. You're just guessing that because you assume that just because hes a prog guitarist that he tries to write solos that sound otherworldly and alien but he writes some seriously melodic solos that are full of feel, that also have that bit of shred in them. Anyone worth their pinch of salt knows that. And by the way, I'm playing guitar 7 months and can down pick Master of Puppets. You act as if down picking is some extreme technique that only a rare few cant do.

@@alien6582 There is a video where James got frustrated teaching Kirk because he struggled to nail a simple riff. And as brilliant as James is in what he does I don't think he is anything special when it comes to playing lead. So yes Metallica will struggle if they are to cover DT songs.

People claim Petrucci can’t downpick the riff. From what I see he definitely has the speed to do it, I just don’t think he was too worried about semantics such as downpicking a certain riff. It’s more efficient and makes more sense to alternate pick some parts.

I think it's a miracle he's able to still sing professionally in a band--due to a terrible bout of food poisoning, he ruptured his vocal chords after the Awake tour. They nearly kicked him out of DT.

I love Metallica, I only like one song by DT. This is an excellent cover, the voice is perfect for this song. The gravelly effect in his voice is good for master of puppets. The studio version of master of puppets sounds quite similar
That sounds damn good! First time I hear this version but I like it a lot, such a good job and even some independent personality in there, these guys are master (pun intended) musicians (duh! Of course)

My point exactly. It's all about technique. My technique makes me sound exactly the same whether I'm picking down or up, and especially if I'm playing something with a lot of distortion. I've always been picking up and down for certain stuff, and therefore my technique (which in general isn't very good) makes me sound pretty even.

+George Pichl I agree when we look at whole works - but, they distroyed this song, when you're 'one of the best' you should do everything better or in your own special way - they didn't - especially Petruci - his downpicking is awful (maybe only here) and whole sound is .... not so special, I like DT style, but this is one of the worst covers of Puppetz

No. It depends on how you play it. The reason it sounds like that it's because they're having to use extra force to get those downstrums to the next string in time. You can make alternate sound the same by just adding more force and that's it. Still easier to play than all downstrokes, and it can sound the same.

It's only an important difference for guitarists who have grown up playing it downpicked, because when you downpick aggressively a lot then naturally your downstroke is going to end up being stronger than your upstroke, as it is for The Het, but if you train in other genres/styles before (as everybody in DT certainly has, having all gone to music college) then you can develop equally powerful downstrokes and upstrokes, as JP has here. His picking is very even and very strong in both directions.
However, it doesn't sound right.
Hetfield's vocals are so awesome that he can't even sing them anymore.

I was there. 1st ever DT show. So much fun. On that tour, they played a full cover album whenever they played 2 nights in a city on the 2nd night. But they never said which album itd be til it happened. We were so frickin stoked when we saw the puppets backdrop like no fkin way. We actually had a bit of a mosh pit going at a DT show 😆 it was awesome. I wanna see the full show
I was there too! At the Vic right? I was with a friend at the front of the elevated section halfway back on the left. It was awesome, not at the front but still an unobstructed view. Though I do remember hearing that it would be Puppets in advance? Maybe it was last minute and rumored, or a few days earlier? I think they had also done it in Europe somewhere.

Scott Karrasch Yea cliff burton generally is held high among the metal community. And Portnoy's drumming has been praised for a while. I get your point though, generally the guitarist is given more/unearned respect.
Right. Well that's why I'm a little miffed because as a drummer, I always listen for the drum parts in a band. If the drummer only plays a standard 4/4 "boom, ts, pa, ts" throughout the song, I tend to get bored with it more easily. Following Mike Portnoy around after he left Dream Theater is actually how I got into Flying Colors, Transatlantic, and Neal Morse's projects. I'm not huge on bass but I do agree that they are as important as any other instrument. I never really felt the bass was ever to prominent in metallica songs though. Maybe it was just the mix but I never heard it too often, (except on Orion. That was Cliff Burton wasn't it? Okay that was really awesome). But Like Myung's bass parts in Dream Theater are outstanding and I always tend to listen more for Geddy's bass in Rush than Alex's guitar. The guy from Yes has some pretty good bass parts too. Just look at Tempus Frigit. Sorry this reply got a little long, music is really a big deal for me.

Metallica basically helped set the tone for metal music in the early 80's and Dream Theater recognizes that. The really, really respect what Metallica has done. I mean, why else would they want to cover the Master of Puppets album in its entirety? Metallica may not be as technically skilled as the individual members of Dream Theater, but they still did amazing work with music. In my own opinion, I think Metallica might sound a lot like DT if Cliff hadn't died because of his musical influence.

@PietroRumenta Actually mistakes must be separated in 2 categories... 1st, mistakes that are made from fail play and 2nd memory mistakes.. so Petrucci just makes a memory mistake that shows us that he didn't remember that part not that he couldn't play it... btw its the easiest part of M. O. P. so we have to doubt about Petrucci's memory and not his guitar skills ;)))

every single member of dream theater is Technicaly very higher from those of metallica..still if you asked me which band would i choose to listen play master of puppets or any metallica song that would be metallica for sure
Maybe if your upstrokes and downstrokes are very different to begin with. I don't play that much guitar myself, and certainly no Metallica songs, but I really don't hear a difference between up and downstrokes when I play unless we're talking chords obviously. With other instruments doing their thing as well up/downstrokes don't matter much even if you're sloppy.
Say what you want about Dream Theater being more technically demanding but Metallica wins at writing catchier riffs and just generally more interesting songs in my opinion. Not bashing Dream Theatre in any way but I'd rather have the songwriting ability of 80s Metallica than DT. I will admit though Metallica has released some trash too.
