Getting Carried Away at Beaulieu Auto Jumble! | Vlog #15

  • I went searching for some gems at Beaulieu, one of my favourite auto jumbles! And despite trying to resist, I found myself in a car auction...
What did you think of that Lagonda?!
As the proud owner of the 'Ranalah' name, I'm trying to revive the British craft of wheeling. I was looking for a wooden pattern of the wheeling machines, as well as any archive material I could find.
If you know of any items related to the 'Ranalah' English Wheels, please send me a message or leave a comment!
If you enjoy the video, please leave a like, and if you would like to see the rest of my journey and more, subscribe to my channel! And don't forget that bell button, if you want to receive notifications.

When I was living in France in the early 90's I used to go up to England for the car auctions and races- Stayed at the Thistle Hotel at Brands and went to Beaulieu a couple times. ( I actually lived in Beaulieu Sur Mer). The SE and SW are absolutely the most beautiful places you can imagine. I remember seeing a herd of wild horses somewhere near Beaulieu, and as a Yank, I was surprised that wild herds still existed in England. Great times- taking the Sealink ferries before the tunnel was opened and driving along the south coast.

I apprenticed, under an Elderly English Gentleman (here in British Columbia, Canada) who had apprenticed at Rolls Royce. He had built his own "Wheelie Machine", and gave me just enough instruction, to make me dangerous... 😉
I wish I had spent more time at it... 😞

The spare wheel cover would be easily made by spinning on a lathe, but in production god knows perhaps they had a press tool. The Lagonda would indeed have made a very handsome sporty restoration. I used to have several wheeling machine and an ecols, most peeps would be amazed what could be produced from these machines, Oh by the way I come from the era of fusion welding, with a flame, then plenishing out welds and repairs, with a flipper and dolly. I wish that I had the chance to pass on what was a wonderful trade.

Only just found this channel. You have just made floods of memories come back. The English wheel behind you, I bust the tips of my fingers in when serving my apprenticeship many years go! Get yourself a leather apron to work with that on metal!
You are right though. Many if us left the trade. Its a dying art. We used to have a pair of white gloves in the tool box. You wear them when feeling a finished panel. So, like the old Bristols, Triumphs ,Sprites, you white glove them to feel the hand made work that went into them.

Love your enthusiasm. I too fear our old skills are on the way out with the invent of cancer machines etc. I only wish and to some extent regret that I turned away from possible careers at Rolls Royce, Crewe to join the armed forces and then a further lengthy career in Surrey Police.
I now sit watching you tube and tv series about old skills from wood turning across to thatching and wish I had some of those old skills.
I often consider applying to get an apprenticeship in one of these old trades but at 57 years of age who would employ me.
Anyway Dom, I hope and pray that your devotion to bringing Ranalagh (sorry if spelt incorrectly) back on line gets some of the younger members of society to think about training in these dying out trades.
    Thank you Dom..

There should also be a Spring Motormart Autojumble in May, the September event was traditionally the larger one but largely thanks to the complications of importing / exporting post-Brexit there were virtually no European stallholders at Autojumble and it was more the size of the Motormart. Autojumble usually has another two fields of stuff.

First time to watch any of your video's, ......really great, you have a natural way on screen. After quite a few decades buying and selling country antiques in the UK and Europe, let me give you some advice. if you really want to buy something specific like your Ranalah machines and stuff, just print up an A3/A4 flyer and hand it out to the stall-holders at shows like these, .........if they know there is a potential buyer, and they find anything, they will give you a call, we all used to work that way. The wooden mold you were looking for, is probably still stuck in the back of some dealers yard, after he's fed up carting it around trying to sell it ! Good luck.

Nice vid, bad luck on the Lagonda. My dad had a 1935 3.5 litre Derby Bentley as our daily driver in the 1960s & 70s, and his came as a rolling chassis with tea chests full of bits. Your wheel cover looks far too small for a Bentley - he had a boot mounted spare wheel, with a cover, and it was much larger diameter and depth than yours. It might be from a pre war small car, with a boot mounted spare - Wolseley, MG, Riley, Vauxhall - the outer area that fits over the tyre is very small section, so the car must have been light. Good luck with the 356....my dream car...

I was drawn to the Lagonda too. It definitely had something about it. I didn't bid, but I can see why you were tempted.

Great video, Dom. What a wonderland of stuff that place has. Had the same experience with an old boat I thought I might pick up for a few hundred dollars twenty years ago . Was actually foolish enough to grab my chequebook. Imagine my surprise and shame to see an asking price close to $20K. Gulp. Good luck with your search and can’t wait to see more Porsche content!

I really enjoyed your look around the autojumble. I've always meant to go. I did some work on a "Chitty Chitty bang bang" so was invited to the museum once. Subscribed 👍

Ciao Dom,Just started watching your channel..it's fantastic! have to say I do miss the odd auto jumble in the UK since returning back to where I feel most at home (Bologna, Italy) we have 5hem here as well but most of them have been cancelled due to covid..the most important one being the "CRAME" event within the Imola race circuit which is 20 mins from Bologna..a real shame.
If you ever find yourself in Bologna do give us a shout and will show you around the beautiful region of Emilia Romagna, also known as "Motor Valley".keep up the great content.

Great video. I did see a wheeler dealers where they made a wheel cover but from steel. There was a word for it but can't recall it. It think it was a rough press and then worked on a type of lathe. Looking forward to more Porsche videos.

The hub cap was probably spun on metal spinning lathe using a wood or steel form.

You could make a nice interesting clock from that wheel cover without damaging it.

During my misspent youth I was all about the electronics0 no interest in "obsolee" gears and levers and such.
Now, I find that there's something about old cars with that blunt-nosed, brute force look like the one at 6:13 which hides all sorts of clever intricate engineering inside that appeals to me. Can't explain it but there it is.

Sorry to hear that you weren’t able to locate any Ranalah parts, may be next year.
I will be sure to look out and let you know, maybe others could do the same.

Sadly the third field of jumble wasn’t used this year, which I guess reflected the classic vehicle world limping back into being after the C word, but it was good to go back to Beaulieu this year. Also noticeable was the fewer numbers of European visitors and stall holders normally present, but I guess that was down to the B word!
