That 70s Show writers knew the show was coming to a close... the finale was drawing close, Randy Pearson had already over stayed his welcome, and the love for the series faded with Donna's original hair color.
Now tasked with coming up with an equally big hit--- they decided to jump into the next decade with That 80s Show.
    How good was it?
Well, let me ask you... how often have you heard someone so much as say "That 80s Show" ?
At least the show runners were smart enough to cast a young Dennis Reynolds from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

I like how people who can't create literally anything somehow feel the need to criticize others work. Lemme see what you got? Oh, is that right? Jack shit? Well that's unsurprising. I mean if something pisses you off, maybe go out and do something better instead of blabbering about how much something sucks maybe? No? Just a suggestion. Do more videos of your doggos because your think/stink pieces have the appeal of a 98 yr old on Viagra.

I worked as a young writer on That 70s Show, so I can give a bit of perspective as to what happened with That 80s Show. When they first began developing and writing That 70s Show, the title was not the title, but a placeholder to identify the show, because it took place in the 70s. This is common with titles, because often they won't actually finalize a title of a show until they get a better idea of characters, plots, etc. as well as what marketing says might sell or resonate with target audiences. I remember titles being floated around based on 70s songs (Days Like These may have been one). They were thinking in the mindset of a "Dazed and Confused" style title. However, as time went on, they simply gave up and went with the placeholder title "That 70s Show" because no one could really agree on anything. By this time, the first season was written and being filmed. So the show, although titled like it's going to focus on the 70s, it didn't and never was intended to focus on the time period... it's just by accident that the title seemed to say that it would focus on the 70s. So, as the seasons went on and the show was doing well, the spin off talk began. They offered some of the lower level writers the opportunity to take the reigns being basically supervised and assisted by senior writers like Mark, Bonnie and Terry. By this time, I feel, the focus for That 80s Show did become about the time period because the title of the spin off show had to be That 80s Show. It's odd... I remember sitting in a room being offered an opportunity to write for the show, but the producers and other executives pitched it as a time period piece. Many of us felt the same way: "That 70s Show isn't about the 70s, so why is That 80s Show being pitched this way?" It's simple in my opinion: For That 70s Show, the title was the last thing finalized... for the That 80s Show, the title was the first thing finalized. This approach and the fundamental rule of Hollywood (money), is what doomed it shortly after it was pitched, as far as I believe.

    • @seanlandonclarke
      @seanlandonclarke 4 роки тому +181

@@val.s2866 I would say season 2 and 3, in my opinion, which probably could be said about most sitcoms that run about 6 to 8 seasons. This is where characters are fully developed, story lines are new and the characters are the ages they are suppose to be. However, I do like season 7 as well. I thought there were some good episodes in there too, especially considering time was running out on the show. Strong season for a 7th. As far as writing choices at the end, I think they were "right" for what it was trying to accomplish, which is to stay on the air. Was it good? No... it wasn't. Actors are getting older, some getting success beyond the show, they want to leave before they are forever branded "that character," they don't want to continue on a show that has overstayed its welcome, then writers are getting desperate to fill these holes. These characters can only exist like this for so long, so story lines are getting harder to put together that don't become absurd. I mean is Hyde going to be living in the basement when he is 40? Very few sitcoms go out "on top" because there is too much money to be made, people are working and successful sitcoms are extremely rare. So when they do "hit," no one wants it to end it until all of it is drained. That's why you get what you get at the end of these runs. Seinfeld is the only time I can really think of a sitcom that went out on top and Jerry quit because he knew where it would eventually head. I was gone by that time, though... moved on myself.

I wish they still did that for tv sitcoms. It is so obvious when they use a laugh track and you can hear the same canned laughter clips from one episode to the next. At least with filming in front of a live studio audience it is close to performative art like in a play or something. It makes the actors better and doesn’t feel as disruptive.

The Goldbergs did for the 80’s what That 70’s Show did for the 70’s. The decade and its references are front and center, yet the show doesn’t seem to rely on the references exactly. It’s the heart of the characters that matters over the references. And that’s what makes the show great. You can almost remove all the nostalgia and the show would still work. Unlike that 80’s Show where there would be nothing left.

I feel like so many people can't tell a story from the 80s without making pop culture references rather than using the 80s as a backdrop.
I also feel a big problem with this show is that the writers stretched themselves thin by writing this at the same time that 70s show was on

I feel like - outside of the horror story elements - Stranger Things has come the closest to properly representing what it was like in the 80s. Especially as a kid. My sister was a little older and I’m a little younger than what the main four characters are in the show. It brings up stuff that was huge - Ghostbusters was massive when it was out - in a realistic way. The Cold War era. The fear of the Russians invading or bombing the shit out of us at any given moment. To just disappearing with your friends all day to get into some shit. It’s just people living in the 80s.

"Unhappily Ever After" was AWESOME!!! The reason it had strong Married with Children vibes is because "Unhappily Ever After" was created by the SAME people who created Married with Children and a lot of the same writers wrote for both shows. The Bunny puppet, Mr.Floppy, (voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait) was freaking hilarious!!! and Nikki Cox was awesome on so many levels. And the dad was great! Both shows are even in the same multiverse (there was at least one moment in "Unhappily Ever After" that I know of where during the end credits of one episode the Bunny, Mr.Floppy, receives a letter from an angry viewer saying how his show is a rip-off of Married with Children. The Bunny then goes ballistic and starts explaining how Unhappily Ever After is different from Married with Children. The irony here is that this moment was written by a writer who wrote for both shows. LMAO).

I think one of the biggest things that 70's show had was it's relatability. It was probably written by people who put their own experiences in there because when it came out I remember everyone in my parent's generation saying that it was exactly how they were when they were younger and what it was like to live in the 70's. So as the younger generation it was interesting to get immersed in the era through the characters. I think that 80's show could've worked if they had done similarly.

But it was like having a baby on a sitcom. Buck was every bit a part of the Bundys as anyone on that show and even had his own lines and his own episodes(the new dog did too but it was testament that they forced too much of Buck's personality on the wrong dog) and they probably could have just done without the new dog and just not replace him. And we were both English majors, I really can't believe she couldn't get it. (Same friend told me that she wouldn't enjoy shows like Seinfeld and 30 Rock because "that was New York humor," while she had California humor; she did end up watching 30 Rock and loved it, which I always told her she would.) Though honestly on that 80's show all the characters were caricatures to some degree of the 80's. Also Leo was not one of the main characters. So they had ONE character that was a 70's hippie caricature. And admittedly there were a few other side characters that were pretty much stereotypes too, but it wasn't every single character and all the background people too. It was just peppered in. As he described it as face fucking you with the 80's whereas That 70's show just kinda gave you a light fingering.

Many of the things the kids went through were still in effect while I was was in high school. Some things didn't change for years. 80's Show was like written like a music video that MTV played 10 times a day. 80's Should of had a connection to 70'S Show but didn't. Eric's sister should of had her own series. The show could of focused on a young woman out on her own in early 80's Chicago or some other city.

I think the real reason why that 80s show failed was because people didn't come into it with an open mind, instead expected it to be some reboot of that 70s show .... If u treated it as a seperate entity it's actually pretty good ... Sure not one of the best sitcoms out there but definitely a watchable show with a pretty decent plot point...the whole Cory/Tuesday dynamic was actually really entertaining. Just know if your going to compare it with its predecessor that 70s show or any high standard show like friend's, you've already thought of it as failed. ... I've seen shows with worse writing and sketches this isn't that bad.. it wasn't a "disaster". Honestly if you'd give it a chance and watch it with an open mind, it works..

I had the complete opposite experience. I survived 3 or 4 episodes of 90s Show and could not continue because of the horribly written dialogues and the kids actors, it's just really really bad, Kitty and Red are the only ones saving it, but they can't really carry the whole series. So I went and had a look and the 80s Show which I completely missed and I actually watched the whole 13 episodes in few days and I really enjoyed it. It's definitely not perfect with 70s Show being just another level which you can't compare, but I'm a sucker for 80s so all the references actually made it more enjoyable for me (look Wonder Woman 2 , take example from this!!) and also Chyler Leigh as Tuesday is pure gold and the chemistry with Corey reminds me so much of Jackie and Hyde's dynamics
