You can feel the pain she’s experienced as she sings this. I have never seen another singer who can make You feel as much as Judy Garland could her she sings
JUDY OWNED THIS SONG WITH ONE OF HER BEST PERFORMANCES EVER...SHE HAD DONE THIS A BIT LATER ON THE PERRY COMO SHOW...BUT AS SHE LOOKED LOVELY AND SANG GREAT, I THINK THIS IS THE BEST....
The lyrics she sings are uplifting her face says so much more. Like she's tried so hard to believe the words, and maybe this time when she sings it she'll feel that they're true.
she is truly amazing...too bad she wasnt appreciated like she deserved. May her soul now rest in peace, its been around 50 years...hard to believe. RIP Judy Garland, you are appreciated even to this day!
Many, many years ago at a stopover in St. Louis airport, I was walking and Judy was right ahead of me, she was in a beautiful fur coat, really tiny woman and I was in awe; loved her so much; just a painful life though
When I worked at a counter in a fancy store with a piano player, I complimented him on this song once, and from then on, when I came to work , he’d play this for me. Every time❤️✨
What a life!! What endurance! What dignity! She is in the Hall Of Fame...where she earned her place. Blessings to her family, you must be so proud. What a Wonderful performance!..Straight from her heart.8.2020.
My dearest and unforgetable Judy Garland! From her begining till the last years - one of the best performers. i can't stop crying and smile at the same time when i listen her...
My favorite version. I loved Tony Bennett's version but Judy has a special place in my heart. I'll never stop listening to Tony Bennett, who fell asleep in death yesterday. Again, what a loss.
For my funeral farewell, much love Judy. You brought joy to my life but the sadness never leaves, I saw you at Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia all those many years ago - you broke my heart then and I love you still . Sleep gently in the arms of Angels ^0^
Perfect major third key change, at 2:06. The best version of this is from the London Palladium - shown on the Ed Sullivan show, early in 1963, I believe.
Yes. It's a 'common tone modulation'. The note she sings is common to both keys, so it sounds natural. My favorite modulation is on Celine Dion's version of the Titanic theme (not the movie version - the stage version). Most of these key changes work because they a in a higher key, so the listener feels 'uplifted'. I can't think of any key changes that go down, now that I think of it.
@MrSting17 I thought there was another version, but when I couldn't find it, I thought I just have been mistaken. Glad to know I'm not, but I would like to hear it again!
How in any sane universe can you find ten people to downvote this? I would like to believe that perhaps they just hit the button accidentally and couldn't take it back.
No one can even come close to Judy's voice, her delivery and expression is often imitated, but never to be duplicated! ❤
There is only one Judy Garland and how fortunate we are to have her still through film and her recordings. God bless this wonderful artist.
An amazing talent
❤️
Love this..so emotional for me.
I agree..love het
Soothing
What I love about this is it's all filmed in one take, one camera, no cuts, just sheer brilliance from first note to last. Brava Judy!
My 92-year-old mother passed a year ago. We played this song at her service as she was a Judy Garland fan & this was one of her favorite songs.
You can feel the pain she’s experienced as she sings this. I have never seen another singer who can make
You feel as much as Judy Garland could her she sings
That was her greatest gift!
If Judy can smile through her sadness, what is stopping us??
I cannot think of another performer who could sing with such feeling in this song. She is sharing her life story.
JUDY OWNED THIS SONG WITH ONE OF HER BEST PERFORMANCES EVER...SHE HAD DONE THIS A BIT LATER ON THE PERRY COMO SHOW...BUT AS SHE LOOKED LOVELY AND SANG GREAT, I THINK THIS IS THE BEST....
Maybe Mimi and Josephine
Yes Edith Piaf
No one❤️
There is a very touching recording of this wonderful song by, of all people, Lyle Lovett the C&W singer.
Her eyes were so luminous and expressive...adding to the passion and vulnerability of her performances. She was just heartbreaking.
Judy was the best. This song makes me cry.
I know what you mean x
I can't smile when you make me cry, Judy. I'm in awe of you.
I needed that. The greatest performer of the 20th Century telling us to smile.
@Firestorm895 When she sang this song on her TV show in 63/64, she was doing OK at the time.
The lyrics she sings are uplifting her face says so much more. Like she's tried so hard to believe the words, and maybe this time when she sings it she'll feel that they're true.
You always feel that Judy is singing to you personally. Just Tears. Thank You Judy.
There really is NO better rendition of this song.
Yes, there is. Michael Jackson's. Specifically listen to this version here on youtube: "Michael Jackson - Smile (Piano Version) [Alternate Vocals]"
@@DaRunningMan Nice but Judy owns it
Try Nat King Cole who sang it FIRST and sold a million copies
@@jl3322 he may have sang it first but Judy sang it better
Wow what a performance and what a dress!
Pure talent from head to toe. As was the writer of the music of this song, Charlie Chaplin.
I didn't know Charlie Chaplin wrote songs. Thank you for that info.
Charlie Chaplin did it all
Still loving you Judy, even after all these years. Your voice transports me. Your beautiful face, gestures, still captivate me!
I can't stop my tears
This song touch my heart
💔
I need to hear this everyday.
Ben Troy ... Haaaaa. Once was enough
I hear ya. I need to hear Judy every day
I need to start doing this everyday
That face slays me, voice moves me.
I have never heard anybody sing smile the way Judy Garland does. A beautiful song sung by a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart ❤️💔❤️
YOU CAN FEEL ALL THE PAIN AND DISAPPOINTMENT THAT SHE EXPERIENCED IN HER SHORT AND TROUBLED LIFE 😘❤️❤️
Only lived to the age of 47. By today's standards that is indeed an early exit.
Her life wasn’t all sorrow. She had good times too, and although she died relatively young she achieved a lot.
This is a Great Performance.
she is truly amazing...too bad she wasnt appreciated like she deserved. May her soul now rest in peace, its been around 50 years...hard to believe. RIP Judy Garland, you are appreciated even to this day!
RIP Judy Garland ⚘⚘
MGM appreciated her, but only because of the money she made for them through her immense talent.
Wonderful ............................!!!
The best ever heard "smile". So sensitive, so tender. She carries the pain of her interlocutor and walk with to the light. Marvelous witness tape.
Many, many years ago at a stopover in St. Louis airport, I was walking and Judy was right ahead of me, she was in a beautiful fur coat, really tiny woman and I was in awe; loved her so much; just a painful life though
Truly a gifted, and talented person, who deserved much better in life. She worked very hard.
You met her in St. Louis?? That’s perfect.
Judy Garland... A definition of Awesome.
Two GREATS, Charlie Chaplin and Ms. Judy Garland.
The greatest star 🌟 of them all.
The best version ever 😊😊😊
Exactly what I needed today so beautiful
No one since Judy has been able to put expression and feeling into a song. A star who has never been sadly missed and will never be forgotten.

Absolutely mesmerizing. May she always be remembered for the absolute star she was.
WE LOVE YA JUDY❤❤❤
One of the most expressive singers that ever lived!
When I worked at a counter in a fancy store with a piano player, I complimented him on this song once, and from then on, when I came to work , he’d play this for me. Every time❤️✨
Perfect,Just Perfect

The pain in the voice, a beautiful song written by Charlie Chaplin, Dear Judy, a wonderful talent.
she has my favorite tone of any female singer.
rip smile my dear judy
the legend is legend!!!!
My dearest and unforgetable Judy Garland! From her begining till the last years - one of the best performers. i can't stop crying and smile at the same time when i listen her...
THE BEST PERFORMER!! NO ONE COULD COMPETE WITH HER, EVER.
All time favorite song by this incredible lady.
My favorite version. I loved Tony Bennett's version but Judy has a special place in my heart. I'll never stop listening to Tony Bennett, who fell asleep in death yesterday. Again, what a loss.
She had an hell of a voice!! One of an kind!!
Another song Judy makes her very own!! What a performance!!!
Wow. That's a wonderful song sung by a wonderful lady.
Touching and emotional
Oh my goodness I love her. ❤️
If heaven exists and there are angels singing, I'm sure Judy is on of them,
Dear Unforgettable, We sure miss you...
Thank you Judy. Thank you.
forget Over the Rainbow, THIS is really Her song.
For my funeral farewell, much love Judy. You brought joy to my life but the sadness never leaves, I saw you at Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia all those many years ago - you broke my heart then and I love you still .
Sleep gently in the arms of Angels ^0^
If anyone could sing this song with conviction it was Judy.
Ironically, this song always makes me tear up and/or cry.
So human, so real; a gift for the ages...
Wow! Such feeling and thoughtfulness in every lyric. She conveys such beauty of spirit, I want to send love back to her.
With enough of the usual emotion to move me to tears, only she could sing “Smile” in such a poignant manner.
Beautiful
Judy, I smile every time I hear you sing.
She felt the song.
Exceptional.
God bless you Judy xx
Her voice. Awestruck.
Glamorous
Just talent from above
❤❤❤❤❤
I cry..means so much.
Judy's impact on music has only increased since her death; Sinatra said: "We will all be forgotten but NEVER JUDY."
We will ALWAYS love you Judy and you continue to make us smile.
This performance is just wonderful. A lesson in excellence.
Such talent. Yet such sadness.
Every time I hear the song it makes me cry but I still love to hear this song
just love judy - wonderful and missed
WOW! 💔
Need this every day
She had such a sweet smile❤️
Magnifique

Please provide a link if you can. I had it but it was pulled for some odd reason.....
Robert Jennings yes, the Sullivan version is the very best ... the most gentle and heartfelt !
Yes. It's a 'common tone modulation'. The note she sings is common to both keys, so it sounds natural.

Yes, the Ed Sullivan version was almost ethereal.
@MrSting17 I thought there was another version, but when I couldn't find it, I thought I just have been mistaken. Glad to know I'm not, but I would like to hear it again!
Now I know why Mr. Chaplin survived Judy by the whole decade... He kept smiling while listening to the performance...
Such a flawed human being like us all but with more talent than the rest of us could dream of
Greatest song stylist of all time.
Darling judy
How can ANYONE give this a thumbs down? They just want to be different, I guess, I hope, bc this, like EVERYTHING JUDY SINGS IS PERFECTION!!!!!!
Legend
Uma voz doce que permanecerá sempre no nosso coração e nosso espírito. SALVE JUDY!!!
Will never be anyone greater!
such gracefulness....WoW! ;-)
Best versions
THE GREAT OF THE GREATEST
wonderful
Wonderful and marvelous woman. Sad fate.

Omg this video is so much higher quality than the other of this clip! Amazing!
Trying to smile but she's making me cry!!
