Big facts honestly that's on the lead off runner for being indecisive and then that's on the dude behind him seeing him be indecisive and still following him anyways
Honestly, that's as good as a human umpire should be expected to perform on a chaotic play like that. He has one angle on the play and is watching for several things.
This might be the first time I've seen an Ump make a wrong call and actually understand how it happened. Usually it's just baffling. This one actually makes sense. Also this should probably be reviewable. I don't think anyone's getting this one right without a little help
I think he did a good call from what he could see, from his point of view there was no way to see that hand go off the base during first tag, and there would be no reason to think the hand would come off, why would you do that?
@@RenaxTM91 exactly. And the ump was in a proper field position. He wasn't being lazy and not getting in position--it was just an instance of a play unfolding unpredictably and the ump can't have a perfect view every time. I think the umps might have looked at the replay if the Indians said, "The lead runner was off the base when he was tagged, and should have been called out, and that would negate the out call on the trail runner."
Honestly the ump did a really good job with this one. Wasn’t technically correct but given his line of sight he handled it perfectly, which shouldn’t be taken for granted given the chaos and fast pace of the play
The umpire did a shitty job of this. I was at this game and close to the play and the third base umpire stared down Hernandez on the play and never watched what happened to the lead runner. He assumed what he was watching was a two runners occupying the same base play instead of actually watching the play develop. The home plate umpire would later offer help, but the third base umpire wanted none of it.
I wasn't at the game but it seems like the ump handled this well. From his angle he saw two runners on one base, made the right call for that situation, then saw a runner get tagged while off the base. Both are very reasonable things to believe based on his angle
I can't speak to if the third base ump declined help from the home plate ump. But at 1:14 in the video, the third base ump is clearly watching the play. He assumed there were two runners occupying the base because he couldn't see the lead runner take his hand off the bag; so he made the proper call under the circumstances. I'd be interested to know what the home plate ump did in terms of offering help. Could you hear if the home plate ump said something like "the lead runner should have been called out before the trail runner"?
It’s funny that he says nobody pays attention to you James when his whole argument is that the first runner was paying attention and heard the ump call him out
When you put it like that it's funny. But I think his point was nobody is watching to see who he was talking about, which is still an asinine argument.
I had to rewatch the video to confirm but the lead runner never once looks at the ump to see where he’s pointing. Lead runner fucked all this shit up, if you’re on the bag, stay there until all the dust settles
In situations like this, especially near the end of the game, it's less about actually being correct and more about sticking up for your players to raise morale.
How about this: If you’re a professional ballplayer, and there’s any question, don’t come off the bag. (Of course, he didn’t leave the bag for any reason except momentum.)

@@cassiehale7869 The tag definitely moved him off. Watch the replay. He was planted on the bag before the tag... Doesn't even look like there was contact between the two runners. What momentum??? Literally the catcher pushing him off...
Momentum from the catchers mitt, yeah. But rule 6.01a1 gives him 3rd. If you watch frame by frame he is planted on the bag just before the tag. Tag definitely pushed him off the bag

I was actually at this game sitting in the deck above third base. It was something I had never seen before and I remember my family searched up the rules. However, we did not get the detailed video and explanation that you provided. We figured Herandez was out because he was the trailing runner. We never saw a replay of the leading runner getting tagged and the trailing one not. There truly was an air of confusion on what exactly happened. In the end, both were still called out and of course, we were all upset and then cheered on Tito after he gives a verbal beatdown to the ump once getting ejected. Luckily it didn't matter though with that walk-off. All in all, I'd say it was one of the best games I've been to. It was dollar dog night and we got to watch the fireworks afterward.
I guess I don't get Tito's argument. Like yeah, the ump might not have been super clear on who was safe and out, but it's on the players to trust their own judgment and stay on the base until they know they're out
@@sethclerget oh i know that. You gotta stick up for your players and get them fired up. I'm just saying that the argument in and of itself is just weak

Absolutely correct, both runners should have maintained contact with the bag until the play was called dead and the umpire explicitly told them which one was out.
yup. the trailing runner is 100% safe. the lead on runner was safe, but then took his hand of the bag (ump didnt see it) . they both occupy(he thinks) so the call is (both out.) in reality, the trailing runner NEVER left the bag , NOR did the base runners do anything illegal. the ref called the second guy out due to illegal base running. which is reviewable and wrong!
@@1414-n5y Trail runner is out. Catcher tags 3rd base runner but is in contact with bag. After catcher takes glove off of him to tag the runner from 2nd that is when he takes his hand off the base. So the lead runner is still entitled to 3rd and the runner from 2nd is out.
Rule 6.01a1 states the runner gets the bag they were pushed off of. The fielder obviously pushed him off with the tag if you look close enough. The runner gets 3rd and the runner from 2nd is out. The runner DID leave the area because the umpire called him out on a second tag when he was standing up after being pushed off the bag. He has every right to be pissed at the umpire. The home plate umpire should be giving the 3rd base guy help on the play and the runner goes back to 3rd...
@@rileyesmay he didn’t pushed him. Unless number 23 is made out of paper there’s no way in hell Salvador touched him hard enough to throw him off the base like that. It was the momentum of him sliding back he lost grip of the bag. He didn’t get pushed off.
The following calls are reviewable via replay: Force/tag play calls: Calls involving a defensive player's attempt to put out a runner by tagging him or touching a base, and/or whether or not the runner acquired the base.
Tbh in real time that's a really great job by the ump. I know he was wrong but in real time with such a cluster fuck he did really well and you can't really ask more of him. Too bad it didn't go to review to make it right though.
Hernandez should have been safe because after the first 'means nothing' tag (and before Hernandez is tagged), Johnson comes off the base, thereby no longer "occupying" it. Johnson is out after the SECOND tag to Johnson and Hernandez is safe at 3rd.

yup. the trailing runner is 100% safe. the lead on runner was safe, but then took his hand of the bag (ump didnt see it) . they both occupy(he thinks) so the call is (both out.) in reality, the trailing runner NEVER left the bag , NOR did the base runners do anything illegal. the ref called the second guy out due to illegal base running. which is reviewable and wrong!
@@1414-n5y you didn't watch the video, did you?
@@1414-n5y Trail runner is out. Catcher tags 3rd base runner but is in contact with bag. After catcher takes glove off of him to tag the runner from 2nd that is when he takes his hand off the base. So the lead runner is still entitled to 3rd and the runner from 2nd is out.
@@matthewmaning4859 okay buddy but at 2:45 & 2:52 jomboy literately says "the trailing runner is safe"
One of the rare cases of undeserved ump flaming
"He got off the bag cuz you called him out."
Maybe have your players touch the bag at all times?
Take the bag with them.
@@rileyesmay How right you'd be if the lead runner was pushed off, he wasn't, stop liking your own comment.
@@Ng1Brad Watch it slowly. He is planted before the tag. The tag 100% pushed him off. How else does he just randomly get pushed a foot off the bag?
@@rileyesmay he didn’t pushed him. Unless number 23 is made out of paper there’s no way in hell Salvador touched him hard enough to throw him off the base like that. It was the momentum of him sliding back he lost grip of the bag. He didn’t get pushed off.
The following calls are reviewable via replay:
Force/tag play calls: Calls involving a defensive player's attempt to put out a runner by tagging him or touching a base, and/or whether or not the runner acquired the base.
Tbh in real time that's a really great job by the ump. I know he was wrong but in real time with such a cluster fuck he did really well and you can't really ask more of him. Too bad it didn't go to review to make it right though.
Great job explaining this one! I was confused for sure, but you’ve made this make sense.
You missed Bobby Bradley dropping the f bomb in his interview
Hernandez should have been safe because after the first 'means nothing' tag (and before Hernandez is tagged), Johnson comes off the base, thereby no longer "occupying" it. Johnson is out after the SECOND tag to Johnson and Hernandez is safe at 3rd.
i can only hear "james, goddammit, you really fucked this up!" in jackie gleason's voice after all that sitcom talk.
i reached out before this play was even over hoping you'd break it down, good shit
1:08 how does Jomboy keep his composure
Great breakdown, great lip reading job for an extended convo
Send him back to the minors until he learns the basics like staying on your base until you are 100% sure you are out.
Goofy angle on the slide because 3rd baseman was in a place he can't be. He wasn't getting off the base on purpose.
I was watching this game, and I couldn’t wait till you make a video of this. I knew there was only one guy that knew what they said.
Day two of saying this should be good
?
@@ZbagdoesMC I said it last video too
i was waiting for this. we were all waiting for this.
Your voice reminds me of why I loved baseball so much as a kid. Extra points for reading lips, so freaking funny!
