    Ed Harris wore the 6309 in The Abyss. So 10x more cool points for the classic.

    Another great video, love Seiko divers, glad you guys are given them the credit they truly deserve. Currently have an SRP775 and an SKX009, I am waiting for my SRPA21 to show up, hopefully its here by Friday, when the wife isn't paying attention I will pick up a Sumo next.

    It is my understanding that Seiko did make a Pepsi version of the model 6309 - the 6309-729A. I think it was for the Japan Market

    I have a 'slim' case 6309-7290 manufactured in 1983 - it's fantastic and runs at between 0 and +5 seconds a day. l love the vintage Seikos!

    I though the 6306 was the Japanese version and 6309-7040 was international model

      You are right. Just like what they told about the strap, there are some wrong information within this video.

      @ph69jbl 5 років тому

      actually 6306 was japan only and 6309 is a kind of a different model that had several variations. the 6309-7049 was for US market while 6309-7040 being for JP and international markets

    Waiting for my PADI turtle, your vid makes me even eager to finally getting it. I do prefer 120 clicks though but do understand your point. Not a fan of the Squale bezel action though.
    Keep up the good work guys, really enjoy your videos

    I have a Seiko 6306 Turtle and couldn't avoid NOT buying a New Turtle, I paid AU$399 in Jan 2022, which is not much more than a New 6309 cost in 1978 in Australia. I think they were around AU$295

    Another great video. Love your Seiko content and enthusiasm for the brand and the various models.
    I was heavily considering a turtle at one point, but I have to pick and choose certain watches which I feel are what I would like THE MOST and reflect my personality and likes, versus those which I'd really like to have as part of my collection, but are perhaps less significant for myself and what I hope to reflect in my personal watch collection which I'm trying to keep as concise and true as possible.
    That being said, the only Seiko diver I currently own is the SRP637 "Baby Tuna". I actually really like this watch a lot. I ended up getting one while looking for a "Tuna" in the likes of the SBBN033 (which you've reviewed fairly recently), SBBN015 (the older version of the SBBN033, I like because the shroud is NOT polished) and the SBBN039 (PADI version, I like that the bezel insert is still brushed metal and not a colored one to diminish the overal size of the watch, and the blue accents are kind of nice in a sporty way, but may lack classic longevity).
    I picked the Baby Tuna because it was just under $300 vs close to $1000 for the Tuna. It had a brushed finish shroud. It has a solid 4R automatic movement (which is keeping great time at +1 to +2 secs per day), the second hand pointer is lumed and not the back end. It is an amalgamation of designs.. mostly Monster based, but you get that shroud which gives it the Tuna look, and I think maybe one other watch design mixed into it as well I can pin point just yet... perhaps something to do with the markers on the dial from another design. And, it is slightly lower profile than the Tuna.
    HOWEVER, as great as it looks and functions, you know there's a good chance you may be wanting to sell a watch when you keep looking at it at your wrist and there's just something about it that isn't quite setting off as many happy sparks in your brain and heart. The truth of the matter is I think the original watch I desired, which was the Tuna, is the one I really want to fill that almighty tool diver watch spot.
    The design difference are subtle, but there.
    What I like about the Tuna are:
    1a) The shroud looks better. I like how the Baby Tuna's shroud is a little more intricate and folds over the edge of the bezel. However, I actually think I like the Tuna's more primitive approach of just having the shroud come up against to the edge of the bezel and that's it. The edge of the shroud where it meets the bezel looks thinner and I think I prefer that look more. And, the watch's "face" including the bezel is less obscured around the edges and looks cleaner consequently.
    1b) The shroud also comes down lower toward the lugs and just wraps around the case more completely giving it a more perfectly cylindrical puck or "tuna can" look. The Baby Tuna doesn't quite do that and although engineered and designed nicely to interlock the various components around the lugs, again, I think I prefer the Tuna's more primitive no-nonsense approach to the shroud design and consequently looks cleaner around the watch.
    2) The Tuna's dial is simpler and less congested compared to the Baby Tuna. It's not THAT bad, but I can't help but feel it looks like they condensed too much on the dial, although the application of lume is very generous and looks great.
    3) I like the domed crystal of the Tuna. The Baby Tuna is flat, which isn't bad, and I kind of like how it sits lower than the bezel and the bezel angles downward into the crystal.. very similarly to the bezel design you showed on that vintage Turtle in this video. But, I find the domed crystal a little more interesting still.
    4) The Tuna's lineage and history is more significant which is a nice attachment that goes with the design. The Baby Tuna, not so much, since it is more of a combination of designs and with less direct lineage.
    5) I generally prefer automatic timepieces, but I like the fact that the quartz movement in the Tuna was specifically designed and only found in this watch. It is reliable, accurate and I think the premium build and attention to the movement and design of this watch allows it to keep the seconds hand perfectly aligned and solid.. I really can't stand it when the quartz ticking seconds hands are just a bit off (a problem you don't have to worry about in automatics), and even worst when you discover they are sort of loose (it wobbles slightly after every tick and depending on how you hold you watch, it may drop back or forward along its axis slightly further making the execution look sloppy and cheap).. both of these issues I don't expect to find in the Tuna.
    And.. if anybody is to do quartz right, no doubt Seiko is at the top of that list.
    So, long comment, as usual from me, but when I'm enthused about something, I'll go off.
    Bottom line, I think the Baby Monster will sell as I've ordered the SBBN033.
    I've asked this recently of you guys, was debating the value of the PADI version, and decided it won't work in the long run because of it's blue accents. If the blue was just in traditional locations such as the dial, bezel and hands or markers, it could still work (like the SBBN037), but when they are in other areas like the crown, the screws, the trim around the bezel.. IDK, I don't think it will have much wrist time beyond the initial couple weeks or first month.
    I'm reflecting heavily on my past experiences of uniquely blue accented watches from my past where there is significantly more blue on the watch case and bracelet than in the bezel or dial, I can see how they can never be timeless nor classic nor flexible compared to a silver watch with black dial.

      Properly Wound yeah, i think the sbbn033 was the right way to go. Can't lose with that particular model if i really want a tuna, which i believe i really do. Well, sometimes you just have to get and try something you thought yoi wanted alternatively to know if it will work or not.. can't find Seiko's at the stores to see and try.. not the ones i am interested in anyways.
      Keep up this fun channel. Looking forward to the next episode.

    Reason the bezel feels so good is because they have a spring loaded ball bearing pushing up on the underside of the bezel index holes. The newer uni directional stuff like the skx is that stamped metal ring with bent up tabs to fall into the bezel index holes. Older feels much nicer but I guess uni directional is better if you're using it for diving.

    I like and own a 777, not a fan of this blue and black combo, but I don't like Batman subs either. I hadn't realised until I went to get it checked over (wobbly crown), but it has a three year warranty and a free service. I can't think of any other brand that has given me that kind of deal.

    Great vid guys! Loving seeing the SRP + 6039 getting some love!
    I've had my SRP777 for a while now, had the gilt dial 775 before that,
    Love it to bits, gets lots of pool time!

    • @Tonyip83
      @Tonyip83 7 років тому

      Properly Wound
      I loved the gilt dial. But the gold was too saturated for me (unlike the Anniversary edition) the bezel would over shadow the dial. Only in certain light the dial really shines. Otherwise its quite flat. But ive always lusted after a 6309/777 with it high contrast dial. Pure essence of a tool watch, like a speedy or sub. But thats just my taste.
