When you saw Kate Ceberano, Mahalia Barnes & Nikka Costa singing The Real Thing, they were covering Russel Morris's 1969 hit. His popularity rivaled John Farnham's back then. He's still doing gigs now. I went to one of his concerts a couple of years ago and he was singing great.

That doesn't surprise me one tiny bit. I see the US as extremely insular. They are in shock that they are not the only ones on the planet. Expected to come out of sock in 50 to 60 years.
To get into the American music scene back then, you had to pay for your management to go to the USA and promote the band, then you had to pay to get a tape played for the management of a big act that you might get a tour supporting. You could try it on your own, but without the finance, that is very difficult. The bands that made it, Goanna and others, they were the ones who were lucky and got that very rare break. Chisel tried and failed in the USA, so did the Divynals and Mental as Anything. The list goes on. I know that Wendy and the Rocketts manager went to the USA several times, trying to get her a support on a major tour. They ended up getting booked for the European leg of a Brian Adams tour, he threw them off the tour after they were called back for encores in Berlin. They sat around in London and ended up supporting ZZ Top. I should mention that Wendy was charting higher in Berlin than Brian Adams at the time.

Great reaction. Great song. I hadn't heard it for years. Russell Morris is indeed a legend. 'The Real Thing' by Russell Morris is an iconic song of the time in Australia and a must listen to one. You're going to find some amazing groups and songs if you dive in to the Australian music scene. Some you might know, but didn't realise they were Aussie or Kiwi bands. Colour tv took a while to reach Australia. We didn't get a colour tv in our home until about 1973 or 1974. Check out Your the Voice' by 'John Farnham'. He's another Aussie music legend and icon. His voice and this song are well worth a listen. There are so many wonderful Aussie bands and artists, far too many to mention, but you could check out the Aussie group called 'INXS' too who became massive here before the USA and everywhere. Have fun.
My favourite Russell Morris track. He did a good version of hush. Seen him many times over the years and he is still making music and playing. His most well known track is The Real Thing which I seen you’ve reacted to the Kate Cerbrano et al cover. Russell’s version is worth listening to it has Hitler youth chanting and the sound of an atomic bomb explosion. Another suggestion if you have seen it already is Stevie Wright’s Evie parts 1,2&3. The longest track to go to number one in the world, it is over 11 minutes long.
Stevie Wright, Evie (full) Though live, this performance at the Opera House is better than the recorded version, in my opinion. ua-cam.com/video/lPveBD6WWXc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Alberts
Thanks so much for playing this song. I was just 4 years old when it released. For me, this song has been around forever. You made my day! Another fantastic Aussie artist is Stevie Wright. He was in the popular 60's band The Easybeats and then went solo. His song "Evie Parts 1,2 & 3" is a fair dinkum ripper of a track, definitely worth a listen. This is a great channel, I'm hooked & subbed. Cheers from another Australian 🇦🇺
I'm in the UK and discovered RM by listening to a New Zealand radio station on internet radio. I love "Rachael" from back then and "It's all over now, Baby Blue" performed recently...terrific voice still.
Russell sounds even better live. Saw him several years ago and he blew the house down. I had been a fan when a teenager and always liked his voice. Seeing him live was amazing as he has a really powerful voice, which I was not expecting. In his later years he has released some cool blues stuff which is great too. A track you might like is Hello Mr America which is more rock in style, but my fave of his was Rachel and Wings of An Eagle.
He was only 17 when he wrote and sang this song!

I remember waiting for them to play GIngerman again on the radio.
As late as March 1975 for colour TV.
@@johnd8892 There is a youtube clip of Aunty Jack switching to colour just before colour broadcasting was supposed to start. IT's worth rewatching.

@@rosmeeker1964 Yes. I remember watching that Aunty Jack ep on the University Student Union student lounge colour TV Live. Along with hordes of other students who could not afford colour TVs back then, along with our families for a few years.
I went to see Russell in concert, in Tassie 2 years ago. He was still an amazing singer! 🙂
Yay so glad you liked my request 😊 had a feeling the vibrato would get you. This song gets stuck in my head all the time xx
Thanks for your request and outlay.
I've seen Russell live and he is amazing, still sounds fantastic !
One of the greatest artist australia has produced
This is my favourite Russell Morris tune! LOVE IT!! 👏👏👏🇦🇺
Russell Morris still tours and still releases
i LIVE IN jAPAN AND LISTEN to Russell almost EVERY week in my Factory and car !!! He has so many hits and now plays lots of BLUES !!! HIS MR AMERICA song is INSANE !!! NO AUTO TUNE IN THOSE DAYS !!! He lived and GIGED around LA for many years in the 70s 80s
Amen my Man. Russel Morris is out and out one of Australia's finest talents, and this song always has the power to lift my mood and get me singing along!
Awesome aussie singer! I was only 7 when this song came out. Grew up listening to him. This is a great song and also another one of my favs is Wings of a Eagle. I hope you check that out too! He's still going strong and still sounds great even today and live!
Russell Morris was also in the Aussie production of Jesus Christ Superstar, along with John Farnham, Kate Cerberano et al…..
Love this song . It’s beautiful and reminds me of innocent times . Folksie and reminds me of the age of Aquarius , it’s so lovely to hear. I love your reaction videos . You really know music . Love it and thanks again from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
Oooooh Yes Evie 🔥
Stevie Wright, Evie (full)
Though live, this performance at the Opera House is better than the recorded version, in my opinion.

‘On the Wings of an Eagle’ is also wonderful

Absolutely! Brilliant song.
Legend!!! One of THE Best Is Russell Morris. I grew up listening to his songs.
Thanks for that. I hadn't seen him since I was a teenager , I think, here in Melbourne ( I'm 68 now!) I appreciate him much more now!
He is a legend. Still going strong, touring and making new music. I remember having a little crush on him in my teen years
I'm in the UK and discovered RM by listening to a New Zealand radio station on internet radio.
Russel sings "i am the real thing",magic song.
The best and still a legend!!!
Nothing but love ❤️ ❤
