Who said you couldn't be a hard rocker and a nice guy? Graeme Shirley Strachan (pronounced straw-n) proved it could be done. The whole country was broken hearted when he was killed. He spent the latter part of his career doing children's TV. RIP Shirl.

Sadly died flying his helicopter in 2001. His vocal range for a Male was unbelievable. His band Skyhooks broke through with their debut album Living in the 70's in 1974. Everyone loved him he went on to do kids TV and have a successful role as a carpenter on a variety show. He would have turned 70 on Jan 2. I reckon he was the bloke you would love to invite to a BBQ - Cookout in your part of the world.

"Shirley' or 'Shirl' Strahan (Strawn) used the nickname for all of his career.. His real name was Graeme (RIP Shirl) He passed away in 2001. Skyhooks were another really well known Aussie band... awesome live !. The guitarist Red Symons was a judge on Hey Hey Its Saturday for many years on a sketch named Red Faces... Farnsy was often a judge on nights where he would perform on the show. Our country is so small relative to anywhere else, all these guys knew each other very well and often either played on the same bill, together or on each other's albums..

The 70s in Australian music, without a doubt has to be the most vibrant of any decade. I'm thankful I got to see a lot of the artists you react to, live. Sky hooks, Cold Chisel, John F., Divinys, Black Sorrows, INXS etc. It was easier back then to see bands live cause of smaller venues or outdoor concerts with multiple artists.

they (Skyhooks) tried to make it in the USA back in the 70s , unfortunately the U.S. music industry was not ready for these guys. They had some great iconic songs even coming back in the 90s with a song ditty called jukebox in siberia. Most of their songs had Melbourne suburbs in their lyrics Coincidently their bass player who wrote 95% of their songs played on John Farnhams Whispering Jack album

Great song choice for a band that emerged in the 1970s and wrote clever parody songs observing elements of Australian culture.
Shirley (his real name is Graeme but his blond curly hair earned him the nickname, from Shirley Temple) and he was a carpenter and surfer before becoming frontman for the Skyhooks (the band’s name itself refers to a joke commonly played on young new apprentice tradespeople, told to fetch a tool called a “skyhook”, which doesn’t actually exist).
The band had a string of hits Down Under and dominated the radio waves in the 70s. Hits include “Ego is Not a Dirty Word ”, “Horror Movie”, “Women in Uniform”, “All My Friends Are Getting Married”, “Blue Jeans”, “You Just Like Me ‘Cause I’m Good in Bed”, and “Balwyn Calling” (these last two were not singles but were very popular at their concerts).
Later bands like Australian Crawl, Men at Work, and Uncanny X Men drew inspiration from the Skyhooks and their sardonic social commentaries. Shirley sadly died piloting a small plane in 2001. He was a natural frontman who was always very easygoing and went on to become a popular TV presenter. Your comment about him casually coming in from the grocery store is totally spot on: that was Shirley for you!

I grew up with Shirley on on a show called Better Homes Improvement... Or something similar to it. He was responsible for teaching people how to build DIY projects. When he died in that plane/helicopter crash it was one of the worst moments in Australian TV/Music history. Much like John Farnhem and Jimmy Barnes, he was a legend in and of his own right... I feel like after his death Australian TV was never the same... Same goes for our music. For a long time something was missing from our music. Smh. Cant explain it. That year was a hard one for our fave actors, musicians and tv personalities.

His TV program was Our House....I fondly remember sitting down as a child of the 90's and watching him renovate houses with my family. It wasn't until I was older that I understood how important he had been to the Aus music and TV industry.

Skyhooks was a Melbourne band and our parents hated them , which meant we kids and teens absolutely loved them . Other great songs by Skyhooks were, Balwyn Calling , Toorak Cowboy , Smut and my Favourite Women In Uniform , which was covered a few years later by Iron Maiden.

An old friend of mine was camping that weekend and heard his helicopter fly over. A very sad day in Australian music history. This video is one of my favourites of him. You said he looks like he came straight from the store. He probably came from a surf. Women in Uniform is a great song of the Skyhooks. RIP Shirl.

I wonder if this guy realises Vanetta Fields was an original Ikette as in Ike and Tina and has worked with many world artists before settling in Australia and performing with many great Aussie artists.

I loved Shirl and loved Skyhooks. As a young Melbourne lad they really spoke to me and my life. You need to listen to him sing "All my friends are getting married". I nearly tear up every time I hear it. The emotion he conveys is incredible. A true Aussie superstar and missed by everyone. He was a music icon down here and also a tv celeb as well. And through it all was an incredibly nice and grounded bloke.
