Howzat is a cricket expression. Appealing to the umpire for a wicket. Very Aussie. This song was used to promote cricket and often had cricket scenes played as the video clip.
Howzat short for ""How's that?"" ""Caught out"" is a cricket term for when the batsman hits the ball and the opposition catches it without it bouncing.
I was once "roadie" here in the land of Oz, the guy who got me into the game was once the "drum roadie" for this band. I have met the keyboard player and song-writer, Garth Porter, in his old home in Bondi, Sydney, NSW. I had many good times working with bands in Oz!
That was recorded at a long-running music show on our government-funded broadcaster called “Countdown”, where the host was Ian “Molly” Meldrum, and he had bands play semi-live (live vocals, some instruments), as well as music news, celebrity interviews, and national charts.
Sherbet were so hot in the 70's!! I was in love with the Drummer Alan Sandow. Daryl Braithwaite is still entertaining us to this day. Thank you for sharing & Happy New Year to you both.
The outfits from a shop in Hindley Street South Australia. Did backing with Garth the keyboard player on a record at a friend's place. Great times the best music era ever. All the men were wonderful people. Thank you for the memory. ❤ 🎶 🎵 🎤
I'm 61, and remember when Sherbet became a sensation. Girls loved them, guys hated them! But over the years, we grow up, we mature, and we start listening to the music, not the publicity. And I have to admit, I have grown to like them. Great vocals and harmonies, and great musicians. I really like Got the Gun. Who can remember their first song, Free The People? Or their rock'n'roll tune It's Only A Matter Of Time? Lots of good memories.
Ahhh... Yes!... Memories of the 70's when I was a young teenager learning the guitar myself and being in a band when I was in Melbourne. We used to practice at home until the cops kept coming around so we moved into a hall to practice and let our hair down. The old times when we had groupies following us and lots of girls back in those days. We did a number of covers including Howzat and others from other Australian bands such as Taste, Star, Rabbit and then some from Deep Purple, Led Zeplin, Black Sabbath and Richie Blackmore's Rainbow. Unfortunately as it always happens, eventually the band broke up due to getting involved with girls and other issues. But the best thing is, we had fun and that's the most important thing about playing an instrument. "Having Fun". When the fun goes, then the music goes with it.
Loved this band as a kid growing up in the 70s. They were massive on Oz, this was a huge Number One hit. They had a stylish wrist Coast sound like Little River Band, but never made it big outside Oz. Lead singer Daryl Braithwaite had a huge second career as solo act, still performing to this day. He is an Icon. Keyboard player Garth Porter was main songwriter, huge talent, more known as producer these days
That's how we dressed in the mid-seventies Flares silk shirts and platform shoes that was the 70's and all the girls were for Sherbet or Skyhooks memories
Sherbet came from very humble beginnings. They started as a working band in the late 60s early 70s, and they played Saturday night dances in Sydney's west. They played 4 hour gigs for $80.00 a night. That's right $80.00. I did not put the dot in the wrong place.
Child’s Play was another big Sherbet hit from the mid 70s. Darryl Braithwaite had big solo hits with a cover of You’re My World (70s) and Horses (90s).
My first ever live concert was when I was five years old and my teenage sister took me along with her and her friends to see Sherbet in concert in Wagga. The support band was Greyhound.
The only live gig my wife went to in Wagga. I can't say anything bad about them because they were still a great band even though not my style. There is however stillvinyl in our house! Love it. Summer Love also a good track
Seriously??!! I saw them in Wagga at the Plaza Theatre in 1976 with Ted Mulry Gang as support. Awesome concert. I agree, Summer Love is a great song and there's quite a few Sherbet albums in our house as well.
In 1976 I was taken to a Sherbet concert at the age of 10 by an aunt. Full denims, standing on the seat back so I could see the stage over the hoard of screaming teenagers. All the girls wanted to take me home. Fun times.

At the time the strip clubs played it pretty heavily, with an item coming off for each Howzat and etc.... I was a happy little pervert in my youth.....
The Aussie accent is notorious for leaving out every thing that you can. One of the best/worse examples would be Ava-good-wee-gend (said without gaps). This is 'Have a good week end' with lots of bits left out. Then there's g'day - good day, Strailya - Australia, and so on.
Sherbet is more a pop based band - they do an amazing cover of Wishing Well. Lead Singer Darryl Braithwaite had massive solo success post Sherbet... Sherbet were also based in the States for a couple of years and recorded under the names Highway and The Sherbs in an effort to ditch the pop/teeny bopper image they had. Please look at Skyhooks and for fun please look at Norman Gunston (multi-talented actor and comedian who also did send-ups of major bands like Kiss and ABBA) but was also a seriously talented musician. The actor (real name Garry McDonald) was the only actor to ever win a Logie - the Australian version of the Oscar - in character. He released a send up of classic punk with a song called "I Might Be A Punk But I Love You Baby) -is hilarious but again he does a ripper harmonica solo. For hard core Aussie rock you can't go past Rose Tattoo - Rock N Roll Outlaw and Bad Boy For Love...... more your style
You guys are going back way back into my childhood so now you will have to do Skyhooks and Darryl went to the same school and the same year as Oliver Newton-John
G'day Suzi and Trav, Just a bit of a heads up, it's sherBET not sherBERT, just so ya don't get yelled at by the true believers... A little bit of trivia too,,,at one point the boys did a US tour and were on the Dinah Shore Show, rumours were flying around at the time that Dinah and Daryl were a little more than just host and guest... but I guess we'll never really know for sure, coz she took her secrets to the grave, and Dazza is a proper gentleman and has never said boo to a fly about it...😉 🙃🐨🇦🇺
And myself having been an umpire in cricket, an umpire cannot just give a player out. The umpire must be asked, and then he is able to respond. Because I was an umpire for games involving people with varying degrees of vision impairment, many players wouldn’t be able to see what was going on, and so they wouldn’t appeal. So I would say to the fielding player closest to me “Are you asking any questions today?” The player would “Howzat?!” “Out? Yessir, it’s out”
They had a BIG problem when they went to America. The Americans couldn't understand why they were called sherbet which has a different meaning there than here. They had to change their name to Highway, also the boys got into the drugs a bit which also didn't help. They came to my little town in WA in the early 70's.., I think I was about 13. In Australia in the 70s the girls loved either Sherbet or Skyhooks.
Yep and I despised Sherbet with a passion! Shirl and Skyhooks always! Daryl is such a flog! Hahaha

This song is one of the songs from my childhood 💚💥
Just a sidetrack note. Howzat is a cricket term, when the fielding team sings out 'Howzat' to the umpire if they think the batter is out.
That's how we dressed in the mid-seventies Flares silk shirts and platform shoes that was the 70's and all the girls were for Sherbet or Skyhooks memories
Sherbet and Skyhooks were the two most popular bands in Australia in the 70's.... both were more than capable of heavier material and worth looking at
Add dragon to that list
Until AC/DC came along
Oh loves of my teenage Aussie life!! Sherbet!!!!!
They were a good band.
Oh I was such a fan in the 70's

Ahh the 70s. The high school girls divided by their allegiances to either Darryl Braithwaite and Sherbert or Shirl The Curl's Skyhooks.
Yep despised Sherbet with a passion! Shirl and Skyhooks always shi*loads better ... Daryl was a dag! Lol
That is one gorgeous lady!
This reached No2 in the UK probably because of the cricket connotations.
At the time the strip clubs played it pretty heavily, with an item coming off for each Howzat and etc.... I was a happy little pervert in my youth.....
Shirts were illegal in Australia in the 1970s.
Now I'm just waiting for Silvery Moon and Magazine Madonna lol
A band I have seen many times and met on one occasion. Daryl the lead singer still performing and sounds just the same. Check out Rock Me Gently
