Analogman Sunface NKT fuzz pedal demo RED dot versus WHITE dot shootout

- www.buyanalogman.com Sun Face NKT Germanium Fuzzbox comparison of the Red Dot option against the White Dot standard flavor. I like em' both! I used both an SG by the greedy folks at Gibson, as well as an American Standard Stratocaster from the humble folks at Fender. Very different versions of a very cool fuzzface and then some. Hope this demo helps you decide.
You are a man ahead of your time
Man, both at the same time was the clear winner! Damn, no way I can afford TWO of these (or even one!)
Great comparison!
WHITE DOT (RIGHT) - sounds smoother and slightly brighter at times, as well as transparent
RED DOT (LEFT) - sounds louder and slightly bassier and fuzzier, at max it sounds like it's about to blow!
***like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.***
Exactly
I can see where the red dot NKT's would be better for HB-equipped geetars. I didn't realize just how much these old NKT's varied in terms of gain when they rolled off the transistor assembly line. My Sun Face (an early 2003 model) has two white dot NKT275's in it, but one of the NKT's has an "L" written on top while the other one has an "H", which I assume indicates high gain and low gain. It's right in line with the original Ge-type (Arbiter) Fuzz Faces I've heard though. Lower gain than most of the clones/replicas out there, including my 2N404-loaded Throbak Fuzz Haze (which, I must say, I absolutely adore). My Sun Face cleans up better and has deeper mids, but the Fuzz Haze cuts through a live mix better and is noticeably-more-forgiving and amp-friendly onstage. Authenticity VS flexibility/usability. Depends on what's most-important, I guess. I like both.
Just to be clear, I also have an Analog Man Beano as well (bought new in early '08), and the NKT275 inside doesn't have anything written on top, so perhaps the "L" and "H" thing was something he/they were doing back in their earlier days and maybe didn't need to do it that way after a certain point (Maybe they came up with a better/simpler way to mark/sort them later on... I really don't know).
Great demo.
I know nothing about fuzz petals, but I’ve been told analogman is the best. I need it to cover Hendrix and. Gilmour.
Do you think one of pedals can do both?
the red seems louder man they are awesome pedals thanks ss72
Can you do a red dot sun face verse the Fulltone 69? @gearmandude
Thanks for that one! 👍
I know you said get both (which believe me I would do if I had the money) but my budget allows for one and I have my heart set on the nkt 275. To your ears which one sounded better with the strat?
Excellent comparison...do the red dot with a183 if you could .....
is this high gain red dot?
With the STRATOCASTER you prove that the white dot kicks ass in tone.
whats the name of the song in this one it's awesome
Oh yeah and do a Dark Peppermint Fuzz video as well. Thank you! Plus do a video of all the Sunfaces everyone of them. You know you want to.
my bc108 just got stolen, i dont know if I want the nkt275 instead? Play a crunched up amp
Is the red dot a low gain or a high gain transistor?
Oh wow... these things are amazing. It reminds me of a Jack White tone on cocaine. More insane-fuzziness but characteristics of the sort of static-y thunder feel of Jack's White Stripes tone.. just a LOT more grit. I LOVE it. I prefer the red because it's a little heavier, a tad bassier, and has a bit of a boost to it.
So what dot are the ones he's selling now?
where can u buy this in europe?
I liked the white for the sg and the red for the strat
is this jack black?
Good Gawd that Red Ripped.
My white version sounds great through my Marshall but I think my Blues Jr would benifit from the higher gain of a red version, that thing has saturation for days!
The white may have needed a adjustment on the internal trim pot. I would have taken out a multimeter to make sure they have the same Q2 collector voltage.
Is red the high gain...I always thought white dot were the high gain
what song is that when the video opens?
nepalnt2121 i'd like to know too
Nikka Costa - Like a Feather
You're right, it's the next paragraph.
haha "gotta keep it under ten minutes", good job! :D
"We will start with a brand new package of really crappy batteries." lol
Analog Man webpage on Red Dot "They have a bit more gain, less (almost no!) leakage, and sound a little less dark, with better high end definition."
Where's KG?
That red one is SICK SICK SICK SICK>>>>>!!!!
I prefered the red with the SG, and the white with the Strat.
My white dot sounded way better than that one...
Also, it cut through the mix better live than the red I had. All that red warmth is fucking amazing in your basement, but it gets lost in the mix unless you boost it with another pedal.
JACK BLACK ^o^
White one sounds thinner, Red one sounds much thicker and rips soooo much better. Red one for sure.
the red dot one is amazing... No need for LED (just wastes battery) Make sure to get the sun dial bias too... and use Non-alkaline batteries (mercury/cadmium)
white had more dynamics, but the red one could rip. Red all the way, HUGE difference
Red dot!
Although the white dot doesn't sound bad, the red dot sounds heavenly.
like the red one more ... sounds like jimis 'red house'
Sounds like Christian Slater
nah...glad to pay for his goodies on my end...well worth the pennies....AM RULES!!!
GMD
the red dot cuts
I a likey the red! There for I shall buy two maybe. Anyone heard the texas instrument one or is that a waste of our time. :)
White dot sounds more transparent
The red one's louder.
Yew kan't rite ore tipe.
The so-called white dot NKT275 is most likely not real. Because the package is a Japanese transistor, products like the 2SB324 will erase the text and reprint NKT275.
If the sustain is not long.. it's because you touched the trims. Never touch them
red has more grunt. white sounds more like an original fuzzface
Sound like Jack Black narrating…
This is jack black...I mean who's got the money for this shit.
At around $500 a pop, not many of us. You can pick up an empress fuzz or a zvex fuzz factory for between $100-200 used. Both are comparable to these.
