  • Here is a shootout of the 2 most popular King's of Tone. One high gain and one regular gain. Just wanted to see which one I prefer best. Guess what, I like both, but then I'm very indecisive! I hope this helps you choose which one you want when you get to the top of the 45 year waiting list. www.buyanalogman.com/ is where you get em. Just tell Analog Mike you heard it at The Tone Shack!

    High gain for me. A good high gain tone that has definition and doesn't mush out is really hard to come by. The AM KOT high gain is one of those rare beasts.

    Edit: By listening to your demo again (I am waiting for a KOT...:) I find that the high gain - although not dramatically different - has a bit more beef at the same level (about 20% ?) but the real difference is when you play both channels: the low gain has more presence than the high gain, amazingly softer... All in all, as I don't play much high gain stuff, I'd rather have the normal gain as it brings more flexibility through the 2 channels. Thanks again for your demos: very helpful. Cheers !

    Wow guys, don't ride this pedal off! UA-cam video quality sucks. It's a beautifully transparent overdrive that really works best if you know how to really play a guitar. It's touch responsive and super sensitive which means it reacts and highlights your own finger manipulation of the strings and nuances. It's not supposed to be dirty so don't think hard rock. It's for guitarists that dig in and utilise a guitars subtleties and voice. Think Derek Trucks overtones and Michael Landau nuances.

    In the hands of the right player, a DS-1 can sound great. But the KOT is a fantastic pedal. FWIW, Boss Pedals are on more touring pro's pedalboards than any other pedal combined.

    This demo is useless unless you show that the higer gain version is able to get the same tones as the normal gain version by dropping the gain know down a few numbers and bringing up the volume to match , as claimed by mike himself. This is only a comparison of the two on the same settings wich is not a good comparison.

  • @badmuddy
    @badmuddy 12 років тому +1

    yeah, you really should've matched the drive/gain for the various stages of drive, rather than simply matching, say, 3:00 to 3:00, know what i mean? of COURSE they'd sound diff matched in the latter test you used here. we need to know if the diff gain/components really alter the tone of the orig ped, and/or whether you CAN dial in the same tones with both...

  • @strassercaster
    @strassercaster 8 років тому +3

    the only difference between the hi gain and low gain is the drive pot on the hi gain is a 250k and on the low its a 100k.. there are internal switches for clipping as well but thats about it. .im debatting to build,this the bluesbreaker or the morning glory. they are all marshall bluesbreakers. the kot and MG are modded for more gain and volume.the diodes ma856 and 1s1588 are just 914 and 1n4148 pretty much. im not spending 40 bucks for 12 diodes ha ha

    Thank you for your shootouts. The one you made on the Sigma drive by C Matt Mods made me buy it. An awesome TS-type OD, with a lot of options and superb tone.
    The regular KOT has got a particular gain and tone to it. Some will maybe prefer high gain, I don't. I came across a pedal this year that has it all: the Riff Shooter. It has the usual Vol, Tone, Gain pots, plus unique appointments like the voice, a central big red dial thats lets you have 3 levels of OD: lazy, horny (my personal fav) and juicy, which would correspond to the KOT High Gain. Additionally, you have a second boost circuit with adjustable level, that you can use on top, or alone. It's hand-crafted by JMB experience in France. Last but not least, it's about 250 bucks new and I've got it pre-owned for 100... It's definitely worth a try, if you can't look it up on UA-cam ;-) Cheers ! \m/

    Were you able to get the exact same tone from the High Gain and Standard gain version: were you able to adjust the volume and drive on the right side of the high gain and exactly match a tone of the Standard gain. They appear to sound different to me especially when dealing with a mild overdrive rhythm part.

      Yes. I use mine on the 18 volt setting. It bumps up on the headroom a bit. Not really a big bump though. I run Les Paul’s through Supro TremoVerb and Coronado. The added amp was the best bump I’ve ever had. I use the Eventide H9 Left/Right outputs for both amps.

      I'm just fine. Over hyped and ridiculously expensive TS9 type pedals just don't do 'it' for me I guess? Seriously, that pedal was nothing short of underwhelming in EVERY respect for me. LOL....Line 6. No, I'm running an early Matchless Clubman and a %13 JJN 50/100. I'd comfortable in saying I KNOW tone. Maybe I just got a really lousy one. Seriously, it was mushy, mid-heavy and lacked in every respect. It really was not good, at all.

    • @guitphil
      @guitphil 6 років тому

      Agree. I have one but will likely be selling it when I can get around to it. It's nothing more than a couple Marshall Blues Breaker clones in one box with some diode switching. Lot's of cork sniffing on some of this stuff. You would be surprised at the similarities. (I use to work in the wine business).

      @guitphil 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I know. How could I? The one I have was a stroke of luck in terms of $$. got it for $100 and it's a V4. Otherwise there's no way I would've got on da list for that kinda money and lead time. I build my own sometimes too and have a couple of OD's that I like but more often than not I use pretty generic stuff or at least what use to be considered generic. I'm 60 now and managed to hang one to most of the good stuff. Anyway, got the KOT just to see what it was all about and peek under the hood.
      Actually, there are (IMO) some real jems out there that can be had for gigging mans money and sound pretty good. The Truetone stuff (VS-XO) is very nice. Lots of bang for the buck. I also tried one of the new(er) MXR OD's that surprised me. It's the 4-knob brushed gold one. Modified OD I think it's called. Boss OD-3, Bluesdriver, SD-1 are often overlooked too. Again, just my opinion.
      I usually play through old Fender amps that are almost as old as I am.
