- Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals!
Here is everybody's favourite Fuzz Face clone - the outstanding Sun Face from Mike Piera at Analogman. This pedal is widely regarded as being one of the best FF's you can buy - and Mike sure knows his stuff when it comes to tuning this circuit and speccing them out.
You can choose what transistors you'd like in your Sun Face when ordering - this one has the medium gain Germanium NKT Red Dots, which (now that there's pretty much no genuine NOS NKT275s left in the world!) are the new 'holy grail' of Ge transistors.
Mike says these transistors were made at the Newmarket factory & sound absolutely identical to the old Red Dot NKT275s they used to use. They probably are identical transistors - they just have a different part number after the NKT, probably for a specific client back in the day.
This is one of my all-time favourite pedals...it has an amazingly warm & rounded low end and - as with the best Ge Fuzz Faces - cleans up incredibly well with the guitar's volume. It's a totally interactive experience using this pedal and so much fun to play & control.
What do you think? The best FF clone you can buy? Magic transistors? Epic clean-up? Or not for you? Comment below!
Guitar is a Fender Strat through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone Combo (recorded with an sE Electronics RNR1 Ribbon) and a Cornell Romany Plus (recorded with a 57)

Great demonstration! I just purchased a sun lion with the Red Dot. Can’t wait till it comes in!
Did you talk about the sundial , bias knob !!!
It really has an effect on the tone..
if you don’t set the sundial/bias you may be missing a big part of the experience
Another great demo ! Thanks
Very nicely done demonstration of an excellent pedal!
Wow. Wish I had this for a Gilmour video I just did. Great demo man!
Great demo thanks
Very good demo.
Great demo! I really like the part where you slowly turned the guitar knob up, it really shows the different shades of fuzz, thank you!
Ah cheers Mike!! :-) Absolutely blown away by the NKT...will hopefully be back with another order soon! Thanks mate :-)
awesome work mike :)
Mike if I get the on off knob can it be placed on the volume and not the fuzz pot? I liked the sound of the fuzz all the way down at the beginning of the vid and didn’t want to lose that possibility with the on/off option.
Bertram Ladner No we can’t put it on the volume but if you turn the fuzz knob till it just clicks on it’s pretty much the same as turning a knob all the way down hope that helps
That’s what I was hoping to hear thanks!
All Hail analog mike the king of fuzz :) . You just got to love his sun face it is awesome. cheers Hubcap John
You're still Skegness' answer though, right?! ;-)
As nobody else in skegness builds them then by default !!YES I AM!! :)
thank you sir!
I had the old red dot version with the sundial and on/off pot, but it was before I knew how to use this type of pedal well. I think this one sounds better and just ordered one as it sounded great when you were playing. I just got the off pot though this time as I don’t want to get stuck twisting knobs and trust Mike to set the bias just right.
No no no, don’t let Mike set the bias
If you do you won’t have full important control over the pedal
This video is excellent and maybe THE one I would show people who don’t understand yet that the guitars volume knobs setting is crucial in turning this pedal into an very versatile , overdrive to distortion to fuzz and a super sparkly clean tone..
you could literally use just this pedal and your volume knob on the guitar to create 3-5 dirt pedals!!!!
The bias will be important when it’s hot in your house or if your playing outside in the sun..
actually sometimes when it’s really hot there’s nothing you can do to stop the transistor from crapping out due to heat
That’s how sensitive the NKT transistor is..
sweet u got it!
Aha yeah - took a lot of saving up for, but I'm so glad I did!!
yeah hope you love it! did you not want the bias knob . killer tones! thanks.
The temperature doesn't change much in England to warrant it ;-) haha
This pedal is actually much better "in real life" then it is perceived by me in this demo.
Welcome to the joy of 'volume' :P
Wish I still had mine! Sold it due to medical bills when they were readily available.... still hate myself.
Ah that sucks dude :-(
Don’t hate yourself, we’ve all done it …
Imagine you bought a klon from Brian when he was making them for 250 $ and sold it for 200
I’m sure there’s plenty of those stories too
Yes this pedal is going 1,000 now and I’m wondering how much it will get up to..
I’m guessing 3,000 in 3-4 years
The white dot fetches a little more but I think I prefer the red dot
Ya Mike is still making sun faces and I’m pretty sure you can speak with him on the phone and order a custom made on that is closest to the old NKT 275’s
Does the Stratocaster have a treble bleed on the volume pot?
Nope :-) This pedal just does the spanky clean-up thing unbelievably well!
Great job! Waiting for mine in the mail!
It's worth the wait! ;-)
Mathieu Trépanier
Me too mate, I just ordered one too while Mike has the batch in stock. Yellow LED, no power jack, on/off pot, with sundial. Can't bloody wait :D
hi joe, have you tried the new sunface with RCA transistor?I heard it was good, I want to place an order
I haven't. no...would love to though! To be honest, every Sun Face I've ever heard sounds absolutely outstanding, regardless of transistors - so I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed!!
Do you have the volume set so that it is the same volume as the pedal disengaged? Or is it cranked a bit driving the amp into overdrive? I am just surprised at the sound you are getting when the fuzz control is all the way down. Mine doesn't sound like that but I do have the volume much lower than you do.
Fuzz Faces typically don't have a huge amount of output above unity (people often say the best way to set them is both knobs up to 10!) The amps in this video are set with headroom to spare - it's hitting them a little bit above unison but not hugely!
@@JoePerkinsMusic Thank you, I will give it a try tonight!
Thanks for your help before. I have one other question. I've had more time with my pedal now and it's incredible. But I noticed that when you turn the volume pot, static-ky noise is made. Does yours do that?
@@taylorelliotj Err...turning the volume pot shouldn't really crackle, you might have a dirty pot that needs a squirt of contact cleaner. With fuzz face-type circuits though, when you roll the guitar's volume back the sound should clean up, but when you reach the very bottom you will get a lot of static noise. Not 100% sure why they do that - but just turning your guitar volume up very slightly should stop it :-)
I have the NKT 275, is that any good?
I’ve heard they’re alright ;-) heh
Is this a high gain version?
Nope - just a 'standard' medium gain NKT :-)
@@JoePerkinsMusic Now there's only the "low" gain available :(
Wish the medium/standard would still be on the market.
@@PeterGuitarSound Ah interesting! Guess it was only a matter of time :/
That thing sounds unreal! Wow. Is that a HB strat or a single coil? Can’t see it in the vid. Insane tone and killer playing
Good ol' single coils :-) Thanks mate! Just checked out a few of your vids...your amps sound amazing!! :D
Nice demo Joe, I love that rhythm tone at the start. Can you recommend a cheap fuzz for that tone?
This one really impressed me recently - it uses vintage Ge transistors, sounds and looks amazing & is only about £50/60. I'm sure Hubcap John (see his comment below) could hook you up!! :-) ua-cam.com/video/_VhNDaeprKE/v-deo.html
Joe Perkins Music thanks Joe, I’ll check it out.
NOT ENOUGH JUICE
Glad I picked up a Hartman sfz a long time ago. This is alright.
