These mask designs are so good that it kind of makes you wonder how Lego got it so wrong, huh? Also, your proposed recolor for Lewa is incredible. I'd love to see you make it happen.
I can somewhat understand it if they already had already locked the designs in before the story was decided, but it was such a missed opportunity - especially nowadays when they have a whole Ninjago subtheme dedicated to Legacy sets.
after all the drama over the weekend, I'm excited for the next news round up whenever that comes back. So excited to see these fan works given such a bright spotlight!
these work so much better I must admit the Phatonka were my first sets so they'll always havea special place in my hearts but I think these work SO MUCH BETTER as futuristic versions of the Toa Nuva
I always thought Pohatu's mask looked like the Legendary Vahi, especially in that orange color scheme! I think that the update to his mask is the best for that alone.
Theyre amazing! Ironicly i was thinking today that i might print the Miru for my T1 MOV! Tho honestly i think Phantoka look better with their original masks except brown Pohatu of course. And ive said it on literatly every episode but ill say it again that i love this series cant wait for future episodes!
Yeah you should definitely paint them with the original Mata colors (eyes, primary and secondary as well as a silver armor), I always thought that the gray as a secondary color was a bit boring. But seeing lawa's model really brings back all the 2001 memories.
@@TammyCalamity 3D printers are a new technology that I just understand yet, haha. 😅 That being said, I think it is truly mind boggling what some people are able to create with it! These masks just wouldn't be attainable otherwise, so I think it's a huge positive.
I absolutely believe that this simple tweak would change people's perception of the 2008 line significantly. At least for me, i love Phantoka and Mistika lines and the toa masks were my only problem with it
Ok, wo imma go out and say that the Phantoka masks at least resemble the Toa Mata/Nuva masks pretty well. The sort of mouthpiece between the eyes of Lewa's mask alongside the vents on the side kind of remind me of the giant gaps in the OG lewa. The silhouette of Pohatu's mask also matches pretty well with the original Kakama. Similar with Kopaka, aside from the eye enhancement being on the wrong side.
I've been considering getting some 3D printed Bionicle parts, but my biggest issue (because I get hung up on tiny details that most people don't care about) is that I'd like to find a silver paint that is a match for Bionicle pieces. Anyone have any recommendations?
I'm trying to remember right now but I saw someone's interpretation art of Lewa Phantoka that balanced the grey, lime, and green really well, if I can find it, I'll send it to you!!
I've Had my Phantoka on display for a bit, so maybe I'm a bit too used to the original designs, but No mistake these are amazing masks! The New adaptive Miru looks lovely, Lewa has had so many mask designs I wouldn't blink twice! The Adaptive Kakama is awesome, I do think if the "whisker vents" were angled further out like the original Kakama, it would be perfect. Phantoka Pohatu really needs a wider mask! The Adaptive Akaku I have more mixed feelings with. On one hand, its a stunning design with the scopes on the correct side, but on the other... it feels like the mask isn't suited for soaring through the skies, having those gaps front and center blowing wind into his face. No mistake this is a GREAT mask, but to me it feels more suited for a Turaga Kopaka than a Phantoka Kopaka. Amazing job Galva! I hope to see more excellent mask soon! Thank you Tammy for the showcase!
I think in general the OG Phantoka adaptive masks are... pretty good actually. the custom ones by galva here are certainly more inline with the Nuva masks and are probably better updates, but most of the Phantoka masks do look and feel like their Mata and/or nuva counterparts. really its the Mistika ones which are super off IMO
Why did they have to make the always-leg-day Toa Nuva skip leg day? They could have at least given him some foot weapons, since they removed his hands.
I'm convinced the first Miru Nuva was originally designed to be the Kakama Nuva, then got switched around at the last minute Presumably to give Pohatu a new, fatter, rounder mask design that better suited his Nuva proportions, even though it doesn't meaningfully resemble the original in ANY WAY I mean, the Miru Nuva maintains the central line, running down the face, that the OG Kakama has, albeit embosed, rather than engraved, The cheek vents are clearly just smaller, simplified versions of the OG Kakama's iconic ones The mouthpiece is narrow & central, like the Kakama, rather than broad & designed to be viewed from the side, like the OG Miru The twin forehead holes echo the one in the OG Kakama, albeit divided in half by the new fin Granted: the negative space between the upper forehead ridges somewhat resembles the engraved triangle shapes on the Miru but that just makes the tiny, rectangular holes even more conspicuous The lower ridges help evoke the upward sweeping eyes that both OG designs have, since the eyes are a lot smaller now but those smaller eyes are very angular and far apart, like the Kakama, rather than the smooth, sweeping singular curve that defines the shape of both eyes in the Miru. The 08 Adaptive designs just complicate things even more -_- The New Kakama is somewhat based on the original but ends up looking more like the Mask of Time & the New Miru has the uneviable task of trying to marry to two, very different, OG & Nuva designs, ironically ending up looking a lot like the OG Kakama as a result!"
Supposedly the change from the Mahri to Nuva for 2000 was fairly late, so I'm inclined to think most similarities between the 2008 and 2002 masks are coincidence, maybe they were able to tweak one or two. I really hope we get clearer behind-the-scenes material for 2008 one day!
This is probably mutiny to the Bionicle community and I will understand exile from the clan, but when I ordered a 3d printed mask on shapeways and used it, the axel was too long, so I used a bushing and put it on the axel and cut the bit off that was protruding through. I’m wondering if anyone else has done this and I’m just being paranoid.
So, you have chosen death... Nah, that's sometimes necessary with custom masks if they make the axles too long; and yours is a good way of getting the right length :)
Nah i like 2008 more, every time, each year was referring to different type of cars/watercraft/aircraft. 2008 was all about jets and cheek jet engines are super cool.
You can 3D print anything you have the digital model file for. However I wouldn't recommend it for balljoints, the precision and material strength isn't likely to be good enough.
These masks look really cool! waiting for a mask for toa mystic. P.s. For some reason, I don’t like this pieces of the chest armor, it’s kind of inappropriate for the Bionicle theme, and it looks on the figure as if the knight put on a bartender’s vest instead of chest armor, which looks ridiculous.
I actually prefer 2008 akaku over 2002; 2002 looks too much like Nien Nunb from star wars, and 2008 evokes mata a bit better. I agree that that larger fins on the revamp would be great though
Unfortunately that's not how Lego's plastic works. Original Lego parts are made from ABS pellets, injected-molded under high heat. People have tried, all you generally get are gooey Lego parts and toxic fumes.
nah og phantoka is still better, everything doesn't have to be super derivative and I think the phantoka masks did a rly good job of interpreting and stylizing the old masks, mistika Gali could do with a redesign tho, I like how it's not super stereotypically fem but yea that one was always a kinda weird choice
These are really cool, but you have to admit - Lewa’s 2008 vehicle adapted mask is freaking awesome. For me, definitely the coolest mask of 2008.
Yeah, i think that totally nails the premise of the phantoka sets. the rest, meh, i do like the pohatu one tho.
Lewa was the only Toa done justice in 2008 design wise, only his coloring needed adjustments
