    Thanks for the informative video. My Onkyo TX-NR686 does not have a large or small speaker option, just says "full band, or set crossover depending on speaker size". All my low signals go to the mains and center, and almost none to my sub. My Fluance DB 12's do not have an lfe, just line in. Have the crossover on sub all the way up, phase on "regular" and even with volume 3/4 up, almost no bass. The cable is plugged into subwoofer pre out on AVR, and into line in on sub with a Monoprice sub cable. Any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks.

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  4 роки тому +1

      When you run the Onkyo speaker calibration do you hear audio from the sub when it sends a test sound to th sub? If not you may not be getting audio to the sub, first I’d switch cables then maybe inputs on the sub if you have multiple inputs, then try the same on the Onkyo if you have multiple sub outputs. If you are getting sound during auto calibration you could also try setting your speakers crossover setting to 80Hz instead of “Full band”. That will send more bass signal to the sub.

    Hello, at the back of your sub is L/R connection but I saw you connecting on the R side. What makes of the L.??

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  5 років тому +1

      Either one works just fine. The subwoofer out on most receivers send all the relevant sub signal down 1 unbalanced subwoofer cable.

    • @n1mus76
      @n1mus76 5 років тому +2

      @@HomeTheaterHobbyist , couldn't you just use the y adapter for 1 pre-out on back of receiver to L/R on Subwoofer. Get the male plugs on other end instead of female. Or would it drowned it out? Assuming that booms would only play on right side. Left side would be nothing or am I over thinking this?

    • @LFC-Star
      @LFC-Star 5 років тому

      either works fine as a sub only carries a mono signal.. You can connect another sub into the L one if you want.. With another phono cable.. or a Y SPLITTER into each if you intend to run 4 subwoofers? Running 4 subs is a good idea.. 2 in the front sound stage (forward facing). Then 2 smaller downfiring subs in each corner behing the listening position. To connect those up you use shorter subwoofer phono cables between the subwoofers on the rear. In short one of the front subs has a phono sub cable connected to the receiver then a longer sub cable from the front R sub to the sub R side in the rear. Then do the same with the L side. Then run a sub cable between the 2 rear subwoofers to complete the curcuit.

    • @KIDSIXoo
      @KIDSIXoo 4 роки тому

      Why wouldn't it make sense that there are 2 inputs both wire and RCA clearly labeled (Left) And (Right) Red and white that its a dual voice coil sub woofer? On my 4 subs 2 of them have L and R inputs and I have tested with single and dual connections and when both are hooked up it gains decibels. Common sense.?

      If you’re looking for the subs to play a little deeper than the 2000 pros maybe the way to go. If you want more balanced bass throughout the room than a 3rd 1000 pro is the way to go.

      I found this on Amazon and it could work but I haven't tried it. You connect the RCA end to your receiver and the other end to the sub. Hope this helps!Full disclosure this is an affiliate link so I will get a small commission if you put this cable.

One end of the cable goes to the AVR and that's ok, but why did you plug the other end, which goes to the subwoofer, right into the + (red)? Does it always go to + or does it depend on the subwoofer? I'm planning to get dual Klipsch SPL 150s and they got L channel and R/LFE. Normally, you connect your 1st subwoofer like explained in this video, but what about the second one? AVR has 2 sub slots in it and even if I use the 2nd slot on the AVR, does the other end of the cable still go to R/LFE on 2nd subwoofer? or how does it exactly work?

    or does it need more power to actually make the sub work...
    The sub have a "left and right" input and the cord you mentioned "male and female 2x.. the TV outputs have 1 Arc hmdi, 2 HDMI, 1 optical digital out: which is hooked to the soundbar...
    And components av 6 I believe..is it possible to run the left and right out of the components into the power based subwoofer left and right "in".. I turned it on and I don't here much of anything..

      Set it above what ever setting you choose. For example if your receiver is set at 80Hz then set the subwoofer at 100hz that way you know the subwoofer is playing everything the receiver is sending.

    hey you are doing a great job with you channel. I saw your review on the klipsch the fives, so I decided to buy them I also bought myself a klipsch subwoofer. Now am trying to connect the fives with the sub. Can you please tell me what sub cable you would recomend - would it be a y cable ? since the speakes have a sub out and the sub only has the red and white connection. thanks

      Thanks for watching and commenting. 🙂 Yes, I would recommend a sub cable with a y splitter like this one: amzn.to/3OEjjf1.

    Great video, quick question I have a Yamaha RX-V479 receiver and push Andrew Jones (front, towers and bookshelves speakers and a Polk Audio subwoofer PSW10. I have one sub out if I run another subwoofer with the splitter you talked about will that sperate the bass? Or will they both kick hard? Just curious, new to this world.

      Running dual subs will yield a more even response, meaning the bass will be more consistent in different seats. If you can go dual... definitely do it 👍🏾

    This sub didn't have a hypass rca output so if hooked to a preamp output the main speakers will still be playing full range?

    Thanks! Klipsch website says if you connect to BOTH sub inputs, that it doubles the input voltage which equals a 6dB boost in output. My amp has 2 sub outs. Can I just use 2 RCA's or do I need a splitter from 1 output to increase the bass?

      I’ve never tried using two amplifier sub outputs on one sub so I’m not sure, sorry.

    I've watched many videos....and you're the best!! Awesome job explaining everything, simple and to the point! I do have a question about the sub cable: the info I gathered tells me the sub can be placed anywhere in the room- what if I want the receiver and sub on opposite ends of room? (Theater setting) How can I make a longer sub cable? Do I buy the "y" and then use speaker cable to extend it to sub? Thanks

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  4 роки тому

      Thank you 🙏🏾😀. Yes you can place them on opposite sides of the room. Just use the Y cable and a long subwoofer cable. You can find them on Amazon.

    Hi, I have exact duel subs and a 7.2 amp. Do I need only a single cable to each sub or use a splitter and cable to each sub. My subs only have a red and white connection. Do I set the crossover on one sub to 0 and the other to 150 htz or just let my amp to do the work. I have an Onkyo 767. Thanks

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  6 років тому +1

      Since you have 2 subwoofer outputs on your Receiver you can use those. Use a single subwoofer cable for each subwoofer out then connect it to the white input on each of your receivers. Set the crossover on each sub to 80hz then set your receiver crossover to 80hz as well and you should be good to go! Hope this helps, enjoy!

      I have two cables that have two male connectors that I can connect the red and the white on my subs. Should I do that or just connect one cable to the white input on each sub?

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  6 років тому

      You can just connect the one wire either both reds or both whites

    • @jmtapper2
      @jmtapper2 6 років тому

      I didn't know if my Onkyo 676 had a build in LFE for the white port for movies and the red port was for music base. I have KEF Q100's for my front mains and they are not known for their base so I wanted to use my subs to add base to them for music. If I connect the cable to both the red and white on both subs I thought I would have both bases covered. I didn't want LFE only. I could select base and mains, in my receiver and get music and LFE. I think?

    GREAT VIDEO!!! Very well explained. Can you help with my specific situation. I have a Denon 3806 receiver and a polk audio HTS 12 sub. On the back of the Denon receiver, there is a white RCA port for SW pre-out. There is also a white RCA port for SW Ext. IN. On the back of the sub, i have two options as well. The first is a single black RCA port that says LFE. The other option is a red and white RCA port that says LINE IN. How should I be connecting my sub to the receiver and how many wires will I need? If its to the LFE then I assume its just 1 RCA cable but if its to line in, will I need a Y cable on the sub side of the connection to hook into both red and white? Thanks in advance!

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  6 років тому

      Thanks! I’m not totally sure on this one but I would connect the white SW PRE-out to the black Lfe port. Make sure the volume is low and try some sub heavy music. If that doesn’t work try the other option. Hope this helps!

    Another helpful video. Thank you. On your advice I picked up a Monoprice Monolith 10 to replace my Polk DSW Pro 400 (failed power supply) and I've been fiddling around with the settings since it arrived yesterday. I set the crossover to 120 on the AV receiver even though my Polk Rm8 satellites bottom out at 130. My Onkyo receiver would not allow me to set it at 130, only in increments 80,100, 120, 150 and so on. I set it to the closest I could find (120). I guess my question is actually 2-fold. Does the crossover setting on my AV receiver override the knob controls on the back of my monolith? Also, would it be better to set the crossover higher than the 130 bottom end of my satellites, or slightly below.

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  4 роки тому

      How do you like the monolith so far? Yes the receiver crossover setting will override the sub. I set my crossover just above a speakers lower limit.

      @@HomeTheaterHobbyist Love it. More pop to it than my old Polk Subwoofer, but also not too much to cause problems with our common wall neighbor. Just broke it in with 4k Star Wars and gave it a good test run. So, if my satellites have a frequency response of 130-20k Hz, I should set the crossover at the closest increment above that? On my AV receiver my 2 options that range are 120Hz or 150Hz. Right now I have it set to 120, but that seemingly leaves a gap. Should I bypass the AV receiver settings and just turn the crossover knob to about 135-140 or do you think the 120 or 150 setting on the AV receiver would be better?

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  4 роки тому +1

      I’d go for the 150 on the Avr. You could also look around online and find some bass frequencies around 120 and 150 hertz, listen to them at the difference set points to determine which you prefer. Here’s a link to the Hsu research website that has test tones. Scroll to near the bottom of the page to find them. www.hsuresearch.com/faq.html

      @@HomeTheaterHobbyist okay cool thanks. I ended up just getting a y splitter. But I have learned so much through your videos already! If I'm going to be using a projector, when I hang it on the ceiling, do I just need an HDMI running from the receiver to the projector? That will handle all audio and video?

    There are two line in/ sub in inputs on your sub. Which one do you plug the cable into? Also, on my integrated amplifier I have two sub/ line out inputs. Which one do I plug the cable into at that end?

      Either connection should work, if it doesn't try the other. Mono signal is fine for a subwoofer.

    Good video.
    Couple criticisms:
    1. Audio was too low ... even missing at times.
    2. You didn't show where to actually connect the RCA into the sub... just said, "connect it here "... and never showed where it was connected.
    3. Main + LFE means different thins w diff companies... a caution should have been thrown there.
    Otherwise, excellent presentation.

    Great video. I am wondering if it matters which socket you plug the cable into. Are red and white effectively the same? I have seen Y-cables that split the connection. Would that make a difference? Thanks :)

    • @HomeTheaterHobbyist
      @HomeTheaterHobbyist  4 роки тому

      The cables themselves are the same just carries a signal. The different colors red/white just helps identify which cable is which. In a subwoofer most of the time they are the same but you can try them one at a time to verify.
