    Your kids are so lucky to be able to grow up travelling the world and being exposed to life outside America. I'm a firm believer that that kind of exposure makes for better people.

    In no particular order:
    1. Don’t eat lettuce in Guatemala. It’s may not have been cleaned properly. The same can be said about many produce items like don’t buy cut fruit from someone on the street. Lettuce is very specifically prohibited in my travel group.
    2. The city of Antigua has joined the no straw revolution. You likely won’t get one unless you ask, and it will probably be paper. I might take my own in the future.
    3. Limonada con soda is a favorite drink. It’s lemonade made with carbonated water instead of regular water. Try it.
    4. In most places, you don’t flush toilet paper. There will be a trash can next to the toilet.
    5. While some places do accept USA currency, they are extremely strict on the condition of the money since the banks won’t take anything with the slightest amount of damage. Even a crease from putting a bill in your wallet might be rejected. Get your money exchanged ahead of time. They'll take quetzales in pretty much any condition.
    6. The restaurants often automatically add a tip onto your bill. If your bill says propina on it, you’re all set unless you want to give more.
    7. Keep up on your fluids. Don’t wait till you feel thirsty. Dehydration feels awful. Do not drink the tap water. Agua Pura Salvavidas 😁 (bottled water brand)
    8. It’s completely normal for a woman to breastfeed in public without covering up.
    9. Auto Hotels aren’t just hotels. Umm, let’s just say they service men. 😍🤫
    10. Pollo Campero! It’s Guatemala's version of KFC.
    11. Plantains are yummy 😁
    I’ve been there seven times and hope to go back again in 2021.

      The lettuce and cut off fruits is more about where you get them from ! There are many places that are super clean with veggies and fruits !
      This is honestly more a myth ! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I never happened to me or anybody I know but if it happened to you well you should complain about it ! Places that have food businesses must have a complain book that gets check every month! You fill it out with what happened and they better fix it or they lose their permit !

    • @sallyshort7255
      @sallyshort7255 6 років тому

      Steven Lemus, I could agree to that. Comparing it to KFC is the expression our host uses, but in popularity, you’re right. For anyone else reading this far, there are several familiar chain restaurants in Guatemala like McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, etc. They’re fine to eat, but Pollo Campero originated in Guatemala. You’re getting something more authentic by eating there than a USA chain.
      Yoyo Station, I’ve thought before that places that buy their lettuce pre-packaged from a distributor like for a restaurant chain should be okay because the lettuce should be washed correctly to be sold as such. People on my travel team have disagreed. Our host has lived there for 30 years, and she continually tells us no lettuce. If she’s that insistent, I’d rather play it safe for the week and a half I go and try other food. Other than lettuce, yes, many places are clean with their fruits and vegetables. I’m talking about people who set up on a street corner with a huge tub of produce and cut and sell from their tub. They don’t have running water. They don’t have a way to wash their knives or food while sitting there. Anything on the knife or outside peel will end up on the edible part once sliced. For someone who’s lived there a long time, their system may be able to handle it. For a traveler, I wouldn’t recommend it. Even with careful technique, I’ve heard of teammates returning home with parasites from various years.

    • @theodoresmith5272
      @theodoresmith5272 5 років тому

      Yes but not a cheap as other places. If you want i can look up the hotel in antugua i stayed in. It was part of an old spanish ruin and had hummingbirds in it. About $70 a nite.
      In Flores i stayed for about $40 a nite. Hostels are cheaper but usually dont have a/c. I eat street food. About $4.50 will get you a 1/4 chicken and a plate of rice and vegs. They also set up a little street market every night with food and some really good deserts in flores.
      Get out of guata city. Its not very nice. If its your first time, run all your tours and buses through the hotel/ hostel. It may be a couple dollars more but you know it will happen and some people will scam you at the agencies.

    • @theodoresmith5272
      @theodoresmith5272 5 років тому

      @ to be honest South America is cheaper. You can find decent hotels for about $25 a night in most countries. Plus it's much safer in most places. Peru is probably my favorite.

    What a surprise! I'm going to Guatemala for the first time next week. Only for a couple days, along with a day in El Salvador, but still I'm excited. Found a cheap flight and just had to buy it. I'm probably going to stay in Guatemala City, maybe go to Antigua close by, since it is such a short stay, but I know it's going to be great. I've been doing a bunch of research on it recently just in anticipation. Really want to try kaq'ik and see if I can find something called vino del abuelo. Being a language nerd, I also want to see if local bookstores sell manuals on kaqchikel or k'iche'. I'm going to make the most of a short stay, but this has been a nice surpise.

    Let me question something do you know where you will go after you die? If not let me say you can have a choice to either go to hell or heaven see 2000 years ago there was this man named Jesus who died on the cross for our sins and rose alive 3 days later all because he truly loved us he died for us so I question you now do you truly believe in Jesus or do you live for the world turn to Jesus Christ trust in him Christ has way much more to give than the world he loves us turn to Christ
