Seeing trains carrying aluminium ingots regularly passing next to my home, i can tell you the devs are generous to allow three iron beams stacks on a single car. When the aluminium trains go by, and mind you these have modern full-sized cars with two 220 tons engines in front and two in the middle, the train looks positively funny as the cars look empty with two ingots in front of another and only two high with an insane amount of straps to hold them in place. You have to remember that a full ingot is absolutely massive: lets say every beam in the car is 10x30 cm for 5m long, that is a 1181 Kg piece, and the car carries 15 of these, meaning over 17 tons of iron!

These devs are being super generous with amounts because irl that fully loaded train kAN brought would probably have violated tons of OSHA crap. I calculated it, you are actually just about under the weight limit of the cars even just with 3 batches of the bars.
I approximated from the cart length, width and using a list of available cold-rolled steel beams that the biggest size you can buy is 6000x150x80mm (~236x6x3.15in), which has 94.2kg/m (~62.1lb/ft). Since each beam is 6m (~236in) long and there are 5 beams in each batch, the weight of each batch is roughly 2826kg (~6230lb). Since the cars weight limit is 20000lb, which is roughly 9072kg, 3 batches, weighing around 8478kg (~18690.8lb), are just below the limit. 4 batches would be 11304kg (~24 921.1lb), which is way over.
It would be possible to maybe take 4 batches or even go all the way up to 5 (14130kg~31 151.3lb), since the safety coefficient of most devices is in the range from 1.5 to 2 (safety coefficient is applied to straining limits of products, where the failing load is divided by this coefficient to calculate the "safe loading limit"), however, if the train car is old, malfunctioning or damaged, that could overstrain it.

  • @Pystro

Hey Kan. If you want to put your Betsy to good use consider this:
Make a 18-car train for the Heisler, and have the Betsy between the first 9 cars and the last 9 cars.
The Heisler should be able to pull 18-ish cars and the dead weight of Betsy, at least on 3% grades (since it barely fails on 6% with 12 cars).
If you split the train in front of Betsy, that will give you two 9-car trains, which should be easy enough to load/unload. You just have to remember to fuel Betsy's fire first thing once you reach a station. Betsy should build enough pressure in the time it takes you to load the first 9 cars using the Heisler. Then you can immediately load Betsy's half and re-attach it to the Heisler's back, and you're ready to go to your next stop.

If the physics worked out, you could use the Heisler as a Bank or Pusher engine for extra support for big hills. Dapper, Kan, and Kosmo all ran a train with three different locomotives distributed throughout the train, so I think tacking a Heisler on the top of the train shouldn't be an issue. Just release the brakes on the main loco, and send the Heisler back down the hill afterwards to park on a spur.

If it was possible, I'd do it with the Climax, as it looks lighter than the Heisler (and your fast loco will have to pull your strong loco, which will be dead weight above it's max speed). Perhaps consider an unmanned gravity-run from the iron-mine to the smelter. Where the ore-carts just need a nudge, a disco, and a bit of handbrake. (test-run would need to be manned, ofc, to determine maximum handbrake that'll clear the route). Yes, I know it's more the sort of thing Dapper would do (since it'd literally be a roller-coaster), but it would save time. Where you'd just need to drop a porter with a few cars of cordwood to retrieve the ore-carts and bring them back up to the sawmill.
A similar direct-route (one-way) could be made from coal-mine to ironworks, just need to push it clear and switchback the locomotive at the ridge so it remains on the uphill-side. From there the Mogul could handle the carts on the flatlands and one or two of the lesser engines could be dedicated sawmill-runners and a shuntman to retrieve and unload carts at the smelter.

I think the best solution for the smelter is to have a shunt yard full of cars for a Betsy to load partial length sections then connect filled cars to the max pulling weight of the Heisler so all the Heisler operator needs to do is to connect to the full length of cars and pull it up to where they need to go.
    Ideas for faster transport:
-For the wood products to iron mine you can do the route that Kos did to make it a shallow climb for faster but less powerful trains as they will have no problem going down hill with the empty cars after, just need to make sure they can make it back up the 3% slope. Could also make it a direct route from the saw mill to the iron mine without interfering too much with other tracks by crossing right at the mill then have it as its own line or to load the wood products you go to the left side of the water then slope up to have a bridge and eventually cross over the main track down, this can make it so the 'y' on the hill isn't necessary but you'll need to make a second rail line down to the smelter.
-Have the Heislers run from the smelter to top of the hill where you could have a shunt yard to drop of leaving goods for faster trains to transport over to the depot or manufacturing facility and pick up empty cars to bring back down

Already have enough engines and trackage for a multiplayer. One player using the mogul to run logs to the mill and cordwood to the smelter, another making the iron mine run with the Heisler. Build an interchange yard at the sawmill and add more flatcars and one player can load a train at the mill with beams and planks for the mine and the player on the iron mine run can haul the loaded cars up with the hoppers and swap out the empties. Could also make a transfer yard at the smelter and exchange out empty and full trains for the iron. Might could dedicate a Betsy to the task other than needing to build additional water towers and firewood depots. But multiplayer with dedicated tasks is achievable with your maps now. Getting a line up to the coal mine and ironworks will expand it even more. I wouldn’t want a consolation on your track work though as many sharp bends, I’d either buy a Climax or another Heisler.

-Electrical /lights symbol near the word 'generator'
-Compressor with an air compressor symbol and brake marking
-Sand level quick reference so you don't take off empty on accident
-HP / TQ type tortoise and hair markings on the reverser slider
-Colored dummy light (bold brake symbol on) for locks/brakes not being released, because stopped mid grade due to dragging a soggy daiper in populated server traffic is embarrassing
    Some side tab items
-Quick reference page /right click type system to quickly refresh on what does what
-Consumption rate tables to calculate endurance [similar to how planes have gph rates]
-Load tables so you don't lose product overloading the cars
In the future, maps could have a heatmap of grades and horizontal friction zones to better optimize your routing. Distance markers were also a good idea to help long trains loading. Another thing could be a signal code reference guide and adding advanced sign placements. Late model builds that go 100mph and have 100 cars behind them appreciate this. Also... there needs to be a meme Betsy [Thomas the Heresy Engine] added to the game after they nerf the normal one to realistic [horrible consumption rates, but it will unstick everything]; this is definitely part of my forklift strapped to a flatbed build.

Look at the interface when you are in position to unload the car. It'll tell you what the capacity is for that type of good. This also works on partial loads while you're still filling it up.

The thing is ahoving longs into the train fuel store carrying a few logs at a time is how they did it normally. With coal trains they just dump it in with bucket cranes. But logs well their long so for max stroage you have to stacl them by hand in a orderly fashion.

I feel like it would be smart to build a shunt yard at each building to store the relevant cars, plus you could use a shunt yard at the saw mill to store filled cars; have trains bringing in stuff from all over the map and dropping them off there, and have someone whose job is just to run a Betsy bringing the cars from there to the freight depot

Pretty sure some of the brakes on the cars were still on since when kan went to take them off, they weren't all turning the same way...it'd be nice to have a little indicator on the HUD to show when brakes are on, like a red brake symbol in the top right corner, it won't get in the way either sine the only time it shows would be stationary.

With the current system you have going on with the Freight Depot, it would be ideal for your railway to run left-handed, which means you go forward on the left-hand side of the track.
Also, after get the Coal Mine next, you have two choices to get to the oil area:
The Easy, yet Slow Way: Continue the line from the Freight Depot to go though the flat spot.
The Hard, yet Fast Way: Weave your track through a break in the mountains to extend it from the Coal Mine instead.

  • @theatlasv8633

Heres an idea, you remember hiw Dapper had a giant bridge going around the mountain to get to the iron mine? What if you were to do that but keep the hill 6% track so it would be one giant loop? It would witch off closer to the lumber mill and go around the mountain at a reletively low grade then you can go down the 6% side of the track almost straight to the smelter

Ya Kan the standered locomotives are use on 4-2 persecent and the way that a line irl would be build is that is stedly increasing on those persecents usely from what i hear the path around the waterfall in game is a good way of dealing with it but if is become a problem with the grade the alternative would be to loop the line in question over itself kinda like the georgetown loop. Also i can see you makeing a yard that can act as a meeting point for the geared locmtives and the standered locomotives so it be easyer to trade the needed goods and make a long train the do not need to be pulled by a geared locomotive.

You really should only use the geared loco for any climbing duties. On flat level ground to mild climbing, all the other locos will be able to pull just as much if not more and do it faster. They're build to tackle high grantent rails, not really do flats.
Also yes as others are saying, you should be using a smaller locomotive like Betsy just for shunting and sorting out trains, ie, getting cars ready to be hiched up to a locomotive so when its all coupled up, they can pull out ASAP

i would recommend holding off on buying the climax right now, only cause it seems to have more bug issues than the heisler. another hint for ya, once you put one item on a car, if you look at it like you're gonna unload it, it will tell you how much it can hold. the heisler has been my favorite engine so far, but i can't wait to get the class 70 and do a long coal train ( even if it's just a one time run). been really enjoying the videos! keep improving your rail and watch out for those yeet glitches!

If the reverser functions similarly to real life trains what happens is that by reducing the reverser you give less time for the steam to go into the piston meaning less power but the less steam used means better efficiency so after you got up to speed you can reduce the reverser instead of the regulator. As for the compressor you only need it when you are stopping so you have no use for it while at cruising speed meaning more efficiency that could be saved. As for regulator this controls how easily the steam can flow from boiler to piston and the more easily it does the more compressed it will be allowing you to use less of volume and time lowering need for reverser which in turn improves efficiency.

Wonder if they are gonna add a 2-truck and 3 truck Shay.......
The Geared Locomotives like the Heisler, Shay and Climax usually did 6% grades all day, they were made for that since logging lines had very poor track and had to follow the land the best it could. They didn't win any land speed contests, but they could pull a shitload of heavy cars.

The class 70 can haul over 20 loaded cars (we haven't tested iron ore or coal with this long a consist, and we're not in the southern part of the map yet) I hauled a 30 car consist up to the iron mine loaded with processed wood yesterday and it made it up without many problems (going slow since we haven't fully clear the tracks after the tree update) also, the Heisler (and Climax to a lesser degree) will just jump switches of it's not set in your favor, the cars still won't, but at least the engine will be fine. The class 70 also has slightly more tractive effort IIRC, can't remember exactly how much off the top of my head
