  • Starting to aim my workouts more towards marathon pace and distance. Today I ran 8 x 1K with 1 minute rest in between. It's all about the time on your feet while running in the marathon.

    Come on bro way to be freaking raw with it. I'm glad I get to watch this and then copy you on the workout today. Though I didn't win the Honolulu Sweepstakes, im still training for a Marathon (Done lost me mind mate) to just put myself in your shoes. It ain't like it was back in the day that's for sure, but you're stronger for it soon! Godspeed Cap'n Symmonds!

    Man I've had workouts where I would like to bottle it up and have it forever, and then workouts where I just want to quit and my splits on the last repeats are slower and I'm just not feeling it. Kudos for posting this video where it's just not your day and showing us you're a human just like the rest of us.

    Watching this just got me so pumped cause I just did 3x3k @ 3:35 w/ 2:00 rest this weekend. Fun to see someone like you doing similar workouts as me! And for reference, my marathon PR is 2:47:58 so I'd say you're in a good place 😉

    Great stuff Nick, seriously thanks to these vlogs I got an extra push to keep me going running at least every weekend now. Ah yeah father time just catches up. Just gotta accept the aging process. That haze don't help either I started coughing even before doing any real work hahaha.

    Nice workout. I was happy to be able to get through a 5 x 1k workout earlier in this training session (at a much slower pace and a much older body). Good luck with the smoke - I have some friends in the PNW that are also dealing with it (including having to cut some workouts).

    Nick, when you ran 1:42 how many MPW were you doing? I would think that 8 x 1km @ 3:30ish would be manageable for a 1;42 guy? BTW I'm a fan.

    Do you think 1K repeats are the golden standard for aerobic work?

    • @WeThin
      @WeThin 7 років тому +3

      Possibly, I feel like 800 reps are easier to push yourself on though

    • @lvanzanen
      @lvanzanen 7 років тому +2

      1k's are quite short for marathon training. I'm tagging along with a marathon group (800m runner myself). We do track sessions like: 4x 2k (1min rest); 4k-2k- 2k; 1200-1600-2000-1600-1200 ladder.

    • @WeThin
      @WeThin 7 років тому +2

      I think the purpose of these 1k's is to reach the vo2 max and 2k's kind of go a bit too long to reach it all the way without seriously overdoing it so are usually done at a slower pace for LT work. Which is more important for marathon training anyway.

    • @lvanzanen
      @lvanzanen 7 років тому

      Not sure if you're saying you approve or disapprove of longer intervals for marathon training...
      Anyway, the pace should be around 10k pace.

    • @WeThin
      @WeThin 7 років тому +1

      i approve of them for sure but they work you differently is all im saying

    • @WeThin
      @WeThin 7 років тому +1

      Nice workout! If it were me I'd try lowering the rest and decreasing the velocity a tad though, maybe like 3:07s with 1:30 rest for more race specificity. Up to you/your coach though

    • @dangahagan7645
      @dangahagan7645 6 років тому

      Yeah he's just not good now, which is fine. He always struggled with these kind of workouts and he seems to have aged pretty quickly. I mean even when he was in 1:42 shape, he was talking about doing these at 3:00 with two minutes rest - our whole top 5 could easily do that kind of workout, we regularly do 8x1k at 3:12-3:20 with 45s rest. He just has a different body type and different strengths.

    First and foremost I think when you're running it should be fun we lose ourselves when we start timing so much like as for me I had to knock down my time which is my miles I was usually hitting 15 miles up every 3 days but now I'm only doing 9 miles every 3 days and on Sunday or Saturday I'll hit up 25 mile up which is out cold like I'll start from one into the bridge and go all the way around to the other end of the bridge the other side of the bridge I don't really time it or nothing it'll take me a couple hours two or three or four but I'll get it done but I'll hardly tie myself anymore like I used to that's why I started running cuz it was so fun that's why don't I myself so much like I used to sometimes we lose ourselves trying to be better than everybody else but the whole point of running to have fun

    1min recovery is too fast, you are doing cruise intervals, not really a true vo2max session.
